Hybrid pioneer Lexus has been building electrified powertrains for decades. It was also one of the first makers to offer a luxury SUV, when it launched the original RX back in 1998. Now, just three years after unveiling its second soft-roader, the NX, a third SUV is on the way: the compact UX. Richard Ingram puts the crossover through its paces

With a Prius based drivetrain, the UX hybrid performance should be similarly quick and efficient. You don't have to plug it in as it regenerates it's battery while driving. But it's much smaller than the Audi Q3 and it's pretty darn ugly. The Q3 is a better alternative but its hybrid system requires plugging in the battery (2018 version. IT remains to be seen what Audi will do with its hybrid. Will they import a diesel to the US?

So the Lexus is now using front wheel drive in its base models as well as the Camry based exec saloon? This together with the fact that modern Lexus cars are plain ugly actualy means theat Lexus is loosing its premium brans status.

That boot though, HAHAHAHA, what the heck were they thinking? It's the same joke as with Ct200h but there at least you could understand since it was a rather small hatchback (even if the Auris has a much larger one.

another suv box with a buzzy 4 cylinder, and no rearseat room. dull and boring. what happened to all the stylish cars that used to be made. these things all look the same inside and out

Oddly proportioned wheel arches spoil this. Still seems a great car though
Edit Oct 2021-After making this original comment 3 years ago-I-ve just bought one! It-s LOVELY!

It doesn't look expensive enough for the price. It looks like if I go to the dealer I could pick a top spec one up from the showroom for about 22k after haggling a bit.

Perfect vehicle to replace my CT200H since the new models aren-t available in North America anymore. I will have to give it a test drive & decide based on the MPG.

XC40 over this all day. Lexus CVT junk with no Android Auto or Apple Carplay. The worst interface made today. Very weak, late offering. Slow at best.

Wish they kept the CT hatchback. That car with the UX power train would be a better fit in the line-up IMHO. Looks better too.
