Think the world of you Eric, however in this case having the lower panel/ knee bolster already removed was to your benefit. You would most likely have removed it anyway yo gain access. Puting back would only take a minute. Can't really sanction a customer over trying to figure it out themselves. Money is tight and as we move forward it will get worse. A job is a job 45 yrs. doing this, yes some people suck, I consider myself a master at reading tone and demeanor. If I get a bad vibe, I'm too busy or don't work on that type of car. If the car is sht. pit inside, goodby. Recently had a Nissan, no crank that the ladies neighbor destroyed the column because he said it needed a new ignition switch, not the ladies fault. Put a junkyard column, with key program key to car yaddy, yaddy. Actual problem was bad transponder wire to BCM. Good video as usual

For me, the issue with re-assembling someone else's demolition is that, when I disassemble it, I have memory of the different screws, where they came from, the sequence of part removal, etc. It is much more annoying to be handed a bunch of parts, especially interior parts, and be expected to put them back together. It is especially difficult if you aren't sure if its all there, or if parts, screws etc were lost in the mayhem, or maybe missing from before disassembly. How would you know I think this is not even a close call. Regardless of what the customer wants to pay you, the potential downsides are too overwhelming. Good call, and once again, good job getting right to the obvious.

I use to get vehicles towed to my shop that had milk crates full of parts and they would ask can you put this together Sure I can when I get time, meaning that there is NO priority.
So when I was slow I would put someone on it to start chipping away at the project vehicle usually 4x4 trucks. Also it's T&M so there was a clipboard with time worked on vehicle, parts added.
As long as you weren't in a rush to get it back we could put it together.
Customers would ask what the bill was at so far and they would drop off money! If you ask what's this going to cost, I don't know until I'm finished or you tell me to stop.

100% I will not mess with 'electrical' on these vehicles. My Mother-In-Law bought a 'remote start' from the big box warehouse club, and said This says it takes 10 minutes to install, can you do this for me. NOPE. I took one look at it and said NO. She was angry because she already opened the package and couldn't take the $25 Remote start package back. The thing was a total nightmare when I looked at the instructions. 10 minutes NO WAY. It was setup for EVERY FREAKING VEHICLE POSSIBLE. Pigtail was 25 wires, not to mention it was on a 1990's sub-compact that I was NOT going to get under the dash on. LOL.

After 2 years and 9 months Autel released a update for Nissan. This past week.
Oddly my scanner says V5. 00 and released on 07-10-24.
Yours says v6. 30 (and I'm sure this video was from some period ago) interesting.
Just as a sidenote, I also found out last week that Autoauth now offers gateway access but you have to add it from your autoauth dashboard.
Just a fyi
And I'm not sure what additional permissions it may or may not allow as I have not plugged into a Nissan recently.
Just a fyi

I think if somebody wants to pay you an hourly rate to reassemble the easy plastic pieces under the dash then why not I would Tell them that I don't know the condition of what they had before they took it apart so whatever it is when it goes back together is what they end up with unless they want to also pay me for troubleshooting time to figure out why each part does or doesn't work. But if they expect it as part of you fixing a problem that they brought to you then absolutely not and I think you're right.

I know what you mean Eric, when I had my shop I had one customer that drove a school transportation van, it was a 06 KIA Sedona I had the habit of putting the milage and the date on the oil filter, and in three months time the lady that owned it had put 17, 000 miles on it and was wondering why she had a tick in the cam and lifters. Her husband was wanting to know if a bottle of Lucas would take care of the noise. I was thinking maybe if you use five quarts of it. Lol

It really gets under my skin when a low voltage add on is not done correctly. I always shave the jacket very carefully. Split the strands without breaking them, insert and back wind the added wire. A bit of flux and some solder. Tape with super 33 and never had an issue. Never scotch lock or cut an OEM wire if you can help it. Remote start systems are a hot commodity here in NH. The plug and play is best but the wire in devices are good when installed properly

Amen buddy- she gets diag/repair for customer complaint via agreed upon terms. NOWHERE in those terms is a section about me unabortioning someone else's disaster. If a customer says how much to X, then we will have a conversation, but my time cannot be free because the mortgage isn't free and neither are the utilities, insurance, taxes, tool bills, front end writer nor days off. everything has a finite cost and it ain't pretty.

Eric, i've told the good enough for the girl's we go out with joke, a thousand times, but only once with my wife in earshot. we're coming up on the big 50 here and neither of us are perfect, but we work well together. my impression of Mrs. O is that she's pretty similar to my Mrs J. you should be careful the next time she comes around and says the word lawyer with her little finger in the corner of her mouth. just say'in.

I give them the option to reassemble with a written disclaimer for what was already removed. Still make extra for reassembly and only responsible for what the original problem was Or they can take it and break it again so I can get another trip out of them. That being said, If they want a remote start back on it I would sell them the brand I sell and install. I would not reinstall the remote start they had already removed.

Of course it's not your responsibility to reassemble that. Even if your lady was paying you for it, you don't know how it came apart, or which parts may be missing or broken.
I'd say it's about setting expectations. Before your lady comes for the car, explain what you've done and what you haven't. Ideally you would do this before beginning any work, and make appropriate notes on the estimate and the bill of sale.

I'm the same i don't touch anything that's been disassemble by someone else I fix only the issue I'm asked to fixed period. I have had customers try to pin other issues they already had on me before it was touched by myself and the other issue never had anything to do with what I was asked to fix. So yes there's a lot of people who try to scam shops into fixing other issues that were already there.

Scotch lock or Quick Splice Connector are absolute sheit, don't use them they break more wires than anything. I have fixed dozens of trailer plugs and trailer wiring with them on. Just crimp with vise grip crimper with connectors or splice and solder together. I live in a warm climate with no ice or salt on the roads, so you may have to do a better job at waterproofing/saltproofing in those areas.

Nissan master tech here. Great job finding that problem. There’s a recall for those stop lamp switches on those Sentras. Nissan says the stop lamp switch tends to open circuit due to excessive silicon dioxide buildup. The fix is to install a new switch inside a rubber boot and wrap it with electrical tape. Looks like a giant ball of electrical tape in the end. It’s kinda funny.

Nailed it. I was sitting wondering is he going to try to sort that mess out and put it back together. Happy to see you didn't and i have a pretty good idea of the a-holes you have run across over the years. In fact, i was kind of surprised you even started after seeing that mess. Drop it off and not a word said about it being ripped apart by some dolt. here, you fix it now

Glad you didn't reassemble the interior. After all, the owner may want to take the time to reinstall the remote start, and you'll have made that job harder. You may not be able to find all the fasteners, since you didn't remove them. And I'd bet they wouldn't want to pay the hourly rate when they already know how it goes together and can do it for free.

Honestly, I have the same practice. I replaced wiring for a headlight on a 2008 Pontiac G6 because it was melted, there was a loose wire from a previous mechanic that worked on it. After replacing the wiring, dude came back 2 days later to say that his power seats weren't working anymore and since you worked on it, it just stopped working. Some people man I swear.
