It always amazes me what junk people manage to drive into the shop. I can see this being a hasty slap-it-back-together to boot the guy out the door, but it should've been obvious it was tow away only at that point.
But still. 11 wheel bearings for a TPMS They're easy. Find which sensor isn't transmitting, program and install a $20 sensor, relearn, clear codes, drive it around the block, and ship it. I genuinely don't understand how someone could struggle with that. Autel's TPMS tool is cheap, the MX sensors are cheap and excellent, a decent enough clamp from the hardware store to break the bead and you wouldn't even need to pull the wheel if you really didn't want to.
Not to mention, the third bad wheel bearing in a row that didn't fix the problem should have got a person thinking a little that maybe they were barking up the wrong tree.

I see the owner made a comment, and can understand why he's going after the previous shop for ridiculously poor work. Eric documents the carnage for him here. Now, the real question is, is it cheaper to hire a tow truck or put in a cheapo front wheel bearing in order to drive this Trax to Wilbert's Because repairing this load of Daewoo rubbish is out of the question in my view. It went 200K miles and beat the odds. Fix the obvious which will cost thousands, and something else will fail on this piece of rusty bent tin shortly after, so why bother trusting to luck

I don't believe another shop did that. Most likely the back yard guy broke the pinch bolt and damaged the spindle removing said pinch bolt and this resulted in the oversized replacement bolt. Then the real damage was done while pressing the old and new bearings in. They probably did not have the correct size socket/receiver and mutilated the snap ring groove as well and you have to torque that drive axle nut or it will never seat. It's the classic Honda Civic front bearing style. I've seen this before.

I find it hard to believe that this person drove that car to your shop from any distance whatsoever. It is beyond negligence it is absolute criminal fraud what someone did to that car. The owner of this vehicle could have killed themselves but also could have wiped out many other people on the road, driving the car in the condition it's in. The so-called auto mechanic that performed the work on that car should be held criminally liable.
Of course Mr Eric O will fix this car.

Whats worse, the people that worked on it , or, the over engineered junk designed by idiots to drive up prices that consistently has problems = excess expense, cheap metal and mostly plastic, cheapest copper wire, cheap light weight rear ends that require a clutch pack to reduce shock on the ring and pinion, bear bones suspensions, pieces of belt for universal joints, the list goes on, and on . look what you pay for the junk.

Frankly, I don't believe the customer. Any reputable shop isn't going to keep a vehicle for 4 months. At the very least it would be an insurance liability sitting there. And only a fool would pay to have bearings replaced 11 times. Perhaps he did the work himself, realized he was way out of his element, and came to SMA with a made up story to avoid embarassment. I want to see his receipts for the other shops work.

This is really one I hope we get to see! It's really bad when the most of us here know there is so much that guy's been through. This is why I never leave a car. At your shop I would but that's because we've probably spent 100's of hours and years of being here so you are the exception and not the rule anymore unfortunately. Corona gave people an excuse to lose their humanity. Thanks for still having yours.

There is a chance (albeit small, based on the quality of repairs from the other shop) it could be a missing/corroded/broken ground strap causing the repeated wheel bearing failures. This is a somewhat rare but documented issue on certain cars of history. Just a thought in case you don't find a smoking gun, or worse yet they bring it back in two months with another bad wheel bearing.

He can easily sue tem in small claims court for up to $ 5000. 00 for about $ 35. 00 filing fees. Use your estimate and video of the repair. They should be charged with attempted murder! He should also lodge complaints with the NYS agency that registers motor vehicle repair shops, the Better Business Bureau and send this video to local media. That shop is dangerous and MUST be SHUT DOWN!

My Chevy Sonic has been at the dealership for a no crank no start, for a full year. new ecm, bcm, wiring harness, starter. They only got it all installed and programmed a month ago and now are saying the motor is seized. 100% was not when it was taken into them. They want to replace the motor for $14, 000, but are offering g a discount on the work.

My brother, I know y'all don't want to get sued or demonetized or punished, but I think it would be considered a Public Service Announcement IF you called out the shop! That way folks in that area can avoid getting SCAMMED, like this poor schmuck. Is that other shop a federal government shop! TRUMP/VANCE 2024!

As much as I hate to say it: If you don't have at least some situational awareness and some ability to sense when you are getting duped, you'll always be vulnerable to this kind of situation. 50 years ago, housewives knew to check their oil. Now, owner's manuals have to tell owners not to drink the battery acid!

If you keep your car a more than 3 years you need to have a qualified mechanic. I am really lucky and have a shop that is local, honest, and qualified. SMA is such a shop and I always wonder why many cars come there as a last resort, after they have spent time and money for shoddy work and ask Eric to fix it.

Chevy 1. 4 and 1. 8 have to be the worst engines ever created. I have PTSD from my daughter’s last car. A Chevy Sonic. We donated it to a homeless shelter to use to take people to appointments and such and I still see it around town. That 1. 8 you could look at it wrong and it would develop magic gremlins.

I’d be checking the CV shafts are correct. I’ve seen incorrect ones fitted and they flogged out the bearings. Although this was a VW. they went through a few bearings b4 double checking that the exchange shafts that were fitted were the same length as the original ones. Turned out they weren’t.

We do plenty of those filter housings and cooler assemblies. They either leak like that one or push oil into the cooling system. The latter usually makes the customers freak out and they're glad when the repair is cheaper than they thought

I don't believe the story about the 11 wheel bearings. Nobody would do that. Did the former shop pay for them or the customer. I suspect the customer had the car in the shop 11 times and Eric misunderstood that for the 11 wheel bearings report, or the customer misspoke about 11 wheel bearings.

This has got to be the worst case of fraud that I have seen in quite some time!
Small claims court with the SMA fix completed would most likely win the case for him.
The guy could have gotten a spare car for $3000 that would probably run better.
