This is part 4 of a 5 part multi-part series I recorded replacing the head gaskets on a 2003 Subaru Outback, 2. 5L 2458CC H4 FI VIN: EJ253 Keith: I want to thank you for your Subaru head gasket video series. I watched it all a few times before diving into my 1999 Subaru outback with a 2. 5 dohc. A local mechanic quoted me 1500 to replace HG without valve work. I did the whole thing for about 900 with new idlers, belts, water pump, gaskets, head surfacing, and valve work which was about an extra 300. Your saying If I can do it. you can do it! just gave me the nudge to do it myself. Your videos saved me about 900 and I know it was all done right. The car has 212K on it before the HG failed and I started getting overheating problems. It works perfectly now and temperature gauge is rock solid on normal. I did this with the engine in the car and just jacked it up, and I found the Subaru fairly easy to work on. Thanks for the great videos and I did do it! and I am 67 years old.

Hey Gents, I can't seem to align the left cam sprocket. I've installed the heads and valve covers on both sides. Before going an further, I checked the alignment on the sprockets. There's only one way you can put the sprocket on so I must've been off when I re-assembled the heads. Any suggestions before I start tearing this machine apart again?

When installing lip seals, whether with steel or resilient polymer for O. D, I always apply a thin film of RTV to the outside of the seal. This provides a layer of lubricant to facilitate installation, and it ensures that the seal's Outer Diameter will not leak.

Thanks for these fantastic videos, so helpful.
Do you normally uninstall cam / rocker assembly before having the heads made true at the shop? Or was there a known valve issue with these heads before they were taken off the block?

its my dream to own my own shop/garage like this one day.
did a head gasket job on a 90 Cressida. to say the least, this Subaru job is a lot more intimidating, haha.
i hope removing the engine is going to be a simpler job!

When doing a valve adjust, what happens if you are in a margin of one thousandth of an inch away from spec? How much will that effect performance, or will it? Just curious, for the knowledge with diagnosis and having loose/tight valves

My outback is in need of this gasket replacement. I am a little reluctant to take this project on myself however I plan on learning the steps one by one and committing them to memory. I am determined to do this.

I really appreciate these videos; I've done heads on this type of engine 2x before, but watching this answered a lot of questions I had and gave me reassurance on the things I was doing right.
