I have the p0171 code on my dakota. My dakota runs fine except for sometimes when I'm stopped at a red light. If I lift of the brake and let it roll at idle it jerks and runs buggy. I have a huge leak in my exhaust manifold so I just assumed it was due to that. I'm fixing my manifold this week finally when my acetylene torch gets here. My truck is extremely rusty lol I do NOT want to break off these damn bolts. My gas tank filler neck is rusty and all the brackets that hold it in place are gone so it just kind of hangs way below the gas cap. I have to reach through the rear wheel cover and push it up to get gas. Fingers crossed when I fix the exhaust manifold and the gas filler neck and gas cap the codes stop. I'm thinking I might have some bad o2 sensors from driving like this for so long.

I don't understand FT/O2S data pids. If it has a lean condition, why are the fuel trims positive, I thought positive fuel trims meant that it was extending injector pulse width, aka increasing fuel? So the PCM is trying to compensate for the lean condition by adding fuel, which just makes it rich? Why doesn't it set a rich code then? Does the computer set codes based on the condition PRIOR to the corrections made to the A/F ratio?
TL; DR - The computer detects its running lean, so it adds fuel (which explains the positive fuel trims, causing it to run rich? So the fix is to correct the cause of the original lean condition?
Eric or others can you correct or explain this? Thanks

Just had the same issue on a 98 Dakota with P0171 code with short term fuel trim pegged out at 32 percent positive. I went ahead and smoked it as a precaution and fastened a hanging ground strap to start. Had a feeling it wasn't going to fix it. Ran out of time for the day as I had other cars to finish. Customer had already replaced the fuel pump spark plugs cap and rotor and wires. Glad you guys made this video. I was ready to call it a O2 sensor as I saw the voltage dropped to steady 0 on the scan data. Needed more diagnostic time to confirm and here I am at night thinking about fixing his truck.

I know this is an old video but when your buddy there mentioned 2 x 56k ohm resistors in parralel that is in theory 28k ohm with twice the wattage. So if you have two 1/4 watt resistors at 10k in parralel it is equivalent to 1/2 watt 5k, if you have the same two in series it would be equivalent to 1/4 watt 20k.

Someone tried to steal my cat off my Dakota 3. 9 left cut marks on both sides of the cat causing a really loud exhaust leak. beings though the cat is in between both 02 sensors could these holes alone cause really rough idle as you would call it fish biting?

Put one finger on the ECM pin, then touch the light to a other finger on the same hand. still not enough? Touch the test light to the same finger. Keep getting closer to where the finger touches the ECM pin. The closer you get, the lower the resistance.

Thats funny, I have bags of switches resistors pots diodes etc etc from when the shack closed. There's a place near you guys called something wizard I bought parts at when I was working on pump stations or fracking out there

Wonderful video on diagnosing the O2 sensors. I have a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 318 and the upstream one went on it as well. Great Job. Keep to going man.

Shoot I ended up using my map gas and plumbing pipe wrench and it still took some time to get it out on my truck. It was orginal 29 yrs old ox sensor.
