Blown Head Gasket: Show & Tell Style

Blown Head Gasket: Show & Tell Style Tom: This was interesting, and it would be especially easy to on a car with an inline engine and easy-to-reach spark plugs. Right now, my 1988 Dodge Aries 2. 5 is in a shop for a blown head gasket. In my case, it started to puff white smoke on startup last week, so I shut it down. Then I used the blue liquid tester with the engine idling, and the liquid turned light green. The shop owner told me the blown area was around the #1 cylinder in my case. With an engine like the old Chrysler 2. 2 and 2. 5, the spark plugs are super-easy to remove, so this could let a tech do a very quick diag and make the call.

We use a borescope all the time at work to do inspections of the hot components on our aircraft turbo prop engines. Our units are around 50, 000, and we can take still photos and videos. That is the main reason I have never thought of buying one for home as I assumed they would be price prohibitive for the amount of times I would need one. My other assumption was that to buy one under 200, the picture quality would be crapola. So to see the quality of the image you got with a unit for around 170, I was sold. BTW: Endoscopes go in your bum, borescopes go in your engines: 0)

Eric thanks to past videos and recommendations of that camera I have used mine three times for a sure fire diagnosis. 2 of them where broken timing belts and showing bent valves and just today a 3. 6 traverse with missfire cyl1 that my friend changed plugs and coil and was lost. I could smell gas with the intake off after he took it apart to recheck his coil. Pulled plugs and scoped the holes and with key on Cyl 1 injector is pouring fuel in the hole.
Hey thanks for the advise.
I want to send you a gift. Can I just send it to the shop? What's the address?

That side camera is magnificent, just look at the quality. Just think if you have an engine that burns oil and you want to fix it. You never know what you will find after lifting up the head. There might be deep scars at the cylinder walls that you just can't leave in there and all the engine will have to be removed from the car, stripped to bare block and taken to a machine shop. If you'd seen the scars before you even took the head off, you could abandon the idea of fixing the engine and get a new one right away, or just junk the whole car.

We had an Audi Q7 in the shop once, customer complaint was that it consumed quite a bit of coolant between services.
Pressure tested it, and no leaks to be seen.
Let it sit over lunch but still no leaks to be found.
About to give up and drive it back outside, but the engine wouldn't crank over. One cylinder was completely filled with coolant.
A bad head gasket is so rare to see on a VW/Audi engine, so it never occurred to me that it could be the culprit.

Heads-up - DON'T buy a cheap no name borescope from eBay/Amazon - get something a BIT better quality - check reviews - look for something better made.
Reason? The cheap ones have a tendency to fall apart and you don't want to drop bits of camera/lens/metal retaining rings etc. into a cylinder!
The side-camera is also a must-have - older borescopes came with a mirror to enable this and - guess what - they drop-off inside the engine too!

If that were mine and I were DIY'ing it, depending on the age of the car I'd go for one of those block sealant chemicals. I put K-Seal in, and it slowed but didn't stop it. Then without changing coolant I tossed in a bottle of Blue Devil. That stopped the leak and lasted for 15k miles before the car was totaled for other reasons (side swiped.
I know a shop will do a full gasket job, for liability reasons, and I get that.

I like it. Last time I used a boroscope was to find a connector I forgot when reinstalling the dash, and entire interior on a 2017 lexus suv lol. It was right up near the firewall but I was able to pull the dash loose and cram my arm in there to plug it in. Hey I'm not perfect but I did learn something that day. Now I usually make lil flags from bright green masking tape so I don't overlook Anything like that

Do you have just water in the engine? Didn't see any color to it! The times I compared plugs with a leaking head gasket usually the plug was stained with coolant coloring. But these days coolant can be on the clearer side. Coolants seem to surely stain the exterior parts though!
Hahaha Good video.
Keep up the good work!
Hi to Mrs. O!

I bought a borescope specifically to investigate a misfire in our Hyundai Sonata that the dealer couldn't figure out (parts cannon fail x2. Found it was due to leaking valve seal. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anyone around her that could fix it. Nobody wanted to fool with it, and all the dealer would do was offer a 'special discount' on a new car.

I did my head gasket on my ct200h about a year ago. Those were not misfires she was describing it was coolant in the cylinder basically trying to compress non compressible fluid causing knock I ve heard it. Sounded like my engine was tearing itself to pieces. GREAT video tho. Just wanted to share my two cents.

if you buy a endoscope, buy a good one like this one. Had a cheap one that was poor image quality that made it mostly useless. Mine new one is different brand, but similar price range, and it's has clear bright image on a very good resolution screen Have used it more times than I ever figured.

Would you clean the exhaust valves while the head is off?
If this was my car I would have them cleaned and installed a catch can. I installed a catch can on when I bought my new 2013 fusion with the big 2. 0. Had Ford dealer install the kit before I picked the car up from them.

Just curious. If it's only leaking a bit, and it seems to run fine after a bit of a warmup, any idea how long you can run it like that? If you only have to add a bit of coolant every oil change, and it's not running hot. Not saying I have something similar, asking for a friend
