Let' come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he has a look at this 2008 Chrysler Town And Country that came in with a complaint of no power locks and no power windows when operated from the drivers door. This vehicle takes Eric O. on a path that he is not to familiar with and that is diagnosing an Interior CAN ( controller area network ) system. Lets grab the trusty scope on the rope and the Autel and have a look! Be sure and check out the all new Outdoor w/ Eric O. Channel too!

Ive gotten extremely OCD with my electrical repair over the years. Ideally I would have a wall of wire spools in every possible color combination. Until my ship comes in though, in applications like this I use white wire and then match the OEM colors with an assortment of multi-colored sharpies. I was really hoping to see you depin this one. Obviously no one can keep every style of pin terminal in stock though. I think I probably would have depinned it and soldered my new wire directly to the pin if that was possible. Whether or not that would be better or worse, I dont know, but I prefer to have as few splices between terminals as possible. In the past I have used a pick to uncrimp terminals and then crimp again on the new wire. It is no easy task though and can easily render a pin damaged beyond use if you arent careful.
I am really looking forward to you learning Can Bus networking! I know the general concept. Troubleshooting and diagnostics are beyond my self-taught education though. It is very frustrating to me. There is virtually nothing I cant do on the modern automobile. From setting up a differential to circuit board repair, I can do it all and am equipped to do it well. Data networking is my one weakness and there is more and more of it. As each year passes there is more data networking stuff crammed into vehicles and I remain as ignorant of it today as I was yesterday. I dont know a single person that knows more about it than I do and my attempts to learn about it on the interwebs have not been very successful. There is not much out there and the little bit of information that is available starts off out of my league. Go forth and learn Eric! Then come back and educate me. :D Hopefully once you get learned youll have an influx of customers with networking problems. Lol

Hey there Eric, I have been enjoying the various troubleshooting videos and now I have a live problem here to deal with and want to ask a question: 2002 Chrysler Town and Country with 3. 8L engine. I drove up a gas station ramp and it was a bit steep off the road bed onto the parking area on the way to the gas pumps. My front end dipped way down and as soon as that happened, the transmission starting shifting to random gears. I quickly put in into neutral. I restarted the engine and put it into drive but there was no propulsion. I had no reverse and there was a clicking noise when it was in reverse.
I got it towed home. We replaced the solenoid pack and output and input sensors. Now I have three forward gear ranges. Reverse does not work but my clicking noise went away. Have you ever encountered a similar problem where a sudden jolt caused such a transmission failure?

Shouldn't tape in an area that needs to flex it's better for indiviual wires to be not impeded from self flex tying them together then it concentrates flex in possibly one weak spot of the bundle and then break quicker and more wires in same area. Areas that are fixed it's ok to tape runs. This is the reason you won't see electrical tape in those areas keeps wires from being to rigged and then work harden.

Lol I had a laugh when you did a couple diagnostic thumps and the window came back to life. I had to do the same thing on my truck for a while. My fix ended up being corroded contacts and bad solder joints on the window switch board. Easy fix.
If I had to get out my o-scope to fix my truck it would spontaneously burst into flames and become an insurance claim.

I'm a dealer tech and honestly based on my training my diagnostic work would be done as soon as I saw the broken wires. We'd just throw a wiring harness in it. But I know I don't feel a whole lot of pride doing that compared to what I'd get if I repaired the wires myself. Good work!

Finding a wiring diagram for the whole thing is a process, I just ran into this type of problem today. AGAIN. I did fix it, but that's why I'm here, to LEARN STUFF.
Watching your approach Eric and very curious to see how you attack um
Ok back to watching now.

Just because you can do it does not mean we all can. Do it, you have all the tools and knowledge and experience. And you are good and honest, to bad all service techs were as competent and hostess as you. Mrs. O is so lucky and your children are cute as buttons.

Watching your videos 3 years later (Sept 2019) and I think you are mastering these COMS and Networks. You don't only need to know the mechanics, but need to be a computer tech to work on these things nowadays. Great job Eric! Keep evolving, keep learning!

What a coincidence, at the end of the video is a Jeep Grand Cherokee like my sister-in- law has and I fixed a broken wire in the same place as was in this video, same color also. Most interior functions were going haywire as if the Jeep was haunted,

I know it's an old video, but great job once again Eric. You taught yourself some things, and you taught us some things. I hope you did get to those classes (Havn't seen any videos of you mentioning that so far. Once again, love your work.
