my fan comes on when I turn ac and heater off and on. but when I'm at a light or whatever the needle will start to go up just like you explained. the fan will not come on. if I turn the car off and turn it back on the fan will immediately come on and the needle will go back down? . if its a sensor issue why would the sensor not detect the temp while at the light but if I restart the car it immediately senses it and turns the fan on? I feel like the computer or maybe the relay is bad? Idk. any help?

My Mum had a Toyota Corona Mk 2. The mechanical fan from the crankshaft pulley was removed (was damaged and replacement part then could not be found) and the auto shop installed a electric fan. He also installed a manual switch to turn on or off. No auto on or off. Was fun pulling up to a store and turning engine off, then manually turning off fan 10 seconds later. Would get alot of attention. This was in 1993.

Thank you SMA! Just got done replacing the non working fan in my 07 Commander. I only do short trips so I never noticed my overheating issue. Bet the fan was inoperative for months! The AC is now uncomfortably cold and I've been idling in the driveway for >30 min now with the temp gauge reading less than half scale, rock steady. All the best from Pittsburgh!

My '88 Cherokee has one belt-driven, viscous clutch fan (had to replace it this summer with a junkyard fan because the viscous clutch was seized - the blades wouldn't turn freely with the engine off) and one electric fan. It turns on and off when needed, but I wired a direct feed from the battery with a SPDT switch to turn it on manually when needed.

I had a 1998 Chrysler Concord with the same problem, what I found each motor had a seprate ground, both were bad. Made up new ground wires, and they worked great. I must have been lucky, compared to this.
My Chrysler had 2 small fans one came on at around 195 degrees then the other at 205 if I remember correctly

Today's mechanic not only needs to know how to turn a wrench but he needs to be a computer geek even more. Without the necessary computer tools the average guy at home can only try the shotgun best guess method and throw cubic money at a problem. I admire your prowess Eric.

I'm currently having this exact problem on my '12 lincoln mkx checked the cooling fans this morning after my commute home 20-25 minute commute and left on when i got in my driveway and popped the hood and the fans where not running. Money light is on currently too.

Hey have you seen a lot of the Jeep Liberty vehicles with spun bearings and other catastrophic failures? If so have you been able to pinpoint a common cause? I have seen so many of these for sale with the 3. 7 that have engine failures.

Hello and thank you for this video.
Is that fan supposed to have two speeds? I have a 06 commander which blows cold ac only while driving. Fan is spinning, maybe not as fast as it should.

I just realized why we love to watch these videos, this is what we did as kids in the old days, we went to our local garage and hung out and learn, if we were lucky enough we would work for free just to learn
