Thank you! One follow-up for you: my bad bearing is in my AC compressor, which has been shot for years anyway. (and FYI my AC switch is off) I also live in the other New York couple hours east of you, so it's not really worth it to overhaul my AC system on a 2004! What would you do in this situation?
Could I totally remove the pulley, and try to find a shorter belt with the same number of ribs, or is it not as simple as that? I don't care about the noise: I just don't know how much to worry about that pulley seizing and my belt snapping.

Or just use a longer screwdriver with no jug attached. Or a long wooden dowel. Just put it to your ear and listen, saving you the time of looking around for a jug to destroy, destroying it, and then attaching it. This is an AGES old method for localizing problem sounds, like bad rockers. I used it just a few months ago for the exact reason shown here, a bad idler. Worked like a charm.

How many pulleys does my 2005 Kia Sorento have? I'm a woman and I'm trying to learn about my motor. My motor sounds exactly like this. I went to crank it up yesterday morning and that's what I heard. I hurried and turned it off. Please help. Also, how much would you guess it would cost to fix? I mean at a shop.

Ill bet you can make a funnel out of something that a garden hose will thread on to and just cut it to the desired length. I would imagine that would work very well and keep your important parts away from the danger zone lol. Im definitely going to fabricate something like this to use. Thank you for the awesome tip!

Great trick with the screw driver and jug.
I have the same truck and same noise and I am pretty sure its the tensioner as well but now I know how to check it
I guess you have the end of the screw driver touching the bolts that hold the pulleys on or the housing?
I got to check and fix mine tomorrow

Also I have 2014 mustang, I dont think I have an idler pulley, I have several pulleys, alternator, tensioner, waterpump and I think ac compressor Im not completely sure, but wondering if that noise could come from any of the pulleys, it comes and goes and is the exact same noise

Amazing! I had this whining noise that developed about a month ago and it was driving me nuts and I could never pinpoint where it was coming from, with this method I can now confirm it was coming from the alternator, thank you!

Awesome! Used this today and saved a bunch of time and money (after replacing a alternator that didnt need fixed, but kept me from replacing more! Was idler pulley bearings)

With the old pulley removed, I was hoping you would show exactly where you placed the tip of the screwdriver. Fantastic tip nonetheless.
