we have a look at a 2006 Jeep Commander 5. 7 that came in with a dead misfire on cylinder 7 and a P1417 stored in the ECM. Turns ou sometimes you just need to boot the car! Or is that re-boot?

Intermittent electrical stuff will make you crazy. Have experienced in the past, that sometimes simply making/breaking contact of electrical connectors resolves an intermittent elect. problem which might be the case here.
Your ohm resistance checks verifies rather low current/voltage. With the hi humidity, dampness of your area, perhaps a minute amount of corrosion built up in one or more connectors, the culprit you're chasing here. It doesn't take much to prevent current flow.
Once chasing a NO start condition on a Brit motorcycle, found via an illuminated jewelers loupe 2 of the 122 pins on a long master connector were the cause. Blast with cleaner, apply dielectric grease. Wasn't done at the factory, cause of the corrosion contamination.
Myself after this experience, I'd give every one of those connectors a good blast of electrical contact cleaner. Caig brand Deoxit series seems to work better than most. Disassemble/assemble ea. 2-3 times after cleaner blast to break up, remove corrosion.
Then cross your fingers, knock on wood!

Man that sucks. I mean from running a business perspective. Thanks for these videos. I swear if they put these in Tech training material, they would pay attention and learn. instead of blowing us capacitors using the bench power supply.
-Solenoid failing when hot because it either mechanically jams or a bad connection in winding open circuits/develops too much resistance?
-A big dangle-berry of pooh dislodged from oil gallery/somehow got past oil filter and plugged lifter or solenoid just long enough for some criteria of PCM logic to have a tantrum because actuating solenoid didn't have desired results elsewhere in X amount of milli seconds, then got moved on by oil pressure?
-The evil gremlin of cars/electrickery used telekinesis to hold the solenoid pintle in place?
-I've had too many beers, I'm an idiot and I have no idea?

reply

Do a thourough oil change, and verify problem doesn't return. The MDS solenoids have very fine screens in them. .newer models have an MDS Crusher Mode function. .It's possible that the lifter could also be neginning to fail (flat spotted roller or worn needle bearings) but has not got bad enough to be a duplicatable concern. .only way to know is to pull them, so I would agree with letting it go. If it's not broke right now, don't fix it.

Not surprised you found this. Modern computers
So the PCM thought it has a fault and shut off the injector, which was the source of the misfire. Brilliant! Good job diagnosing it and not charging the customer a fortune to pull the head and replace the lifters/solenoid. You are one of the few very good diagnostic techs Eric. You deserve more credit than you give yourself!

reply

Eric. You are througher.
Your comment of wasting a whole lot of time, B/S.
You checked.
You followed through.
You Eliminated.
You Reset.
Bottom line
The Vehicle leaves your premises without any known issues!
The customer wanted to know if this was a problem that was going to get bigger.
Wise customer.

For what ever reason in the beginning of the video when the engine is misfiring the camera makes the engine sound awful (mechanical noise) TRUST ME WHEN I SAY THIS, it was not knocking or making any abnormal noises, despite how much better ON VIDEO it sounded after the repair. Just thought I would clear this up

I have a friend with a 5. 7 hemi and sometimes the truck simply refuses to start. I have even had the truck shutdown during a turn. The only solution was to unplug the battery for 5 minutes. and that would reset the truck. It's been updated more than once but the issue persisted.

My jeep commander with same engine has code P3497 fault on bank 2 cylinder deactivation. Ive checked the oil which is fine. Disconnected battery to reboot and wipe the code then after 20 miles roughly its back again but engine seems to run ok with no misfires. Any help please?
reply

IMHO this cylinder deactivation by altering the function of the lifters is the worst idea that they ever came up with. I have a friend with a GMC Envoy that was well maintained perfect paint and interior, made worthless by that pos system.
reply

I've seen this on several Chrysler products. Its very possibly micro fretting corrosion on the small terminal pins. Unplugging and replugging I the connector is enough to make good contact again. Likely this was the case at the pcm.
