You guys are excellent techs! It is sooooo refreshing to see you guys do proper diagnostics on this 3. 8L! This is how techs are supposed to be able to do things! I have worked in shops and seen soooo many shade tree mechanics throw parts at the car to try to diagnose the problem, then the owner of the car ends up buying several new parts that they didn't need! That type of tech is who causes the rest of us REAL TECHS to get bad names! BUT, like I tell the customer, I promise them UP FRONT that I will correctly diagnose the problem from the start, and I will only have the purchase the exact part the car needs to fix it! I always tell people, almost anybody can change car parts! Usually if a person can figure out how to get the part off they can usually get it back on the car! But it takes a real tech to do a correct diagnostic the first time, and be able to tell the customer what the real issue is with their car, and not replace parts until they find the problem! So great job guys! It was nice to watch your video and use your video to show people how correct diagnostics are done! It's hard for me to personally show people correct diagnostics procedures, because I can't take people to work with me! So thank you guys! Great job!

I still have my Dad's 92' Old's Cutlass Ciera 6 cyl - thing runs like gang busters. At one time it was running roughly - I usually repair my own cars but being very busy at the time I decided to just have local GM stealership fix it (I was planning a 600 mile road trip.
They kept fiddling and farting on car all day long up to closing time.
I was told they were too busy couldn't fix it - freaked out - I drove it to nearby independent shop who was getting ready to close - I opened hood - told mechanic issue on car - started car - he began pulling plug wires one at a time observing spark between wire and coil - said if I was you I'd replace this coil and all plug wires. I did so. car ran perfectly!
Independent shops run circles round stealership shops.

Hope somebody can help me out here. Have a check engine like come on last year P0336 99 buick regal i changed out the crank sensor with a dealer ship part. That didn't work, so i got the reluctor ring from the dealer ship and key way they insisted on selling me, i replaced the relucter ring but not the key way, that didn't work, i changed out the connector to the crank sensor, new IC module, and a computer from flagship, new plugs and wires, car runs smooth no problems as i can see, any suggestions please? Great video didn't know these cars put out such a fight!

I don't use this word very often, but this video was frickin outstanding. I have a 2001 lesabre with 170k that is starting to give me some stalling issues, and a 2003 lasabre with 60k on it. It might be in the 800+ comments someplace, but what is the name of the program you are using on the laptop? Thanks again, I learned alot. Being in the power generation field for 35+ years my first thought was the top coil being the root of the problem, and your cell call made me happy. :D Thanks again.

God forbid that my folks Buick would be abuse like this one. You know I can never understand why people use the thumbs down button so much. You found the problem and solved it but there are always haters. I think those people must have never done the work. Thumbs up to you for showing the ups and downs of the job. Even if I disagree at least I can do it my own way later, Thanks keep up the good work and sharing with us.

hmm, I threw the ig module at mine when the coil snapped and sent the 50K volts up the module to the fuse block.
Then 18 months later I again threw the lifetime warranty module at it again. They may be junk, but they are free to replace.
I did replace the other two coil packs, they were outside of spec the IM says it should be. they were lower resistence, so more amps. So maybe that is why it killed the IM.

The 3. 8, in my opinion, was the best V6 GM made. Reliable, easy to work on, long lasting and a simple design. The 4. 3 and 3. 5 come in second and third respectively. But, all this is just my opinion. The last Buick I owned with a 3. 8 was at 316, 000, all original minus the alternator, when sold. Was still going strong until someone T Boned the lady I sold it to and totalled it.

I was taught that coils don't go bad all by themselves. That ignition wires, especially the ones that have a carbon center wire that develop high resistance, are also the primary cause of ignition coil failure. I learned this from a BWD Engineer that used to teach lessons at our local Chief Auto Parts! Yeah I learned this in the HEI ignition days. I'm old! LOL Great video!

You can ck a coil by placing a. 5 uf cap at 200 v to the primary and it will spark. End of guess. Reason this works is a coil gets 200v by the primary inductive kick in the real usage. Nevermind trying to overguess the ohms; good clue is primarys are alike. 35 ohms. Just put in another coil driver and fix it now.
