Hey Eric. Here's your million dollar idea. (Don't forget me once you start franchising) I know that mechanics don't come close to making the income that lawyers do (no I'm not a lawyer, I'm state certified, but now I do industrial maintenance, same pay as a mechanic, we work hard for a living) but most lawyers, I believe, are required to take on a certain number of cases a year for no charge to their clients. Pro bono. Seeing as this lady has lost all trust in auto repair shops and since you are doing pretty good, have you ever thought of doing some pro bono repairs for let's say, customers like this lady? She could be putting off those dangerous items only because she doesn't trust mechanics anymore. Show her what's wrong with her struts, brakes, steering, etc and have her pay for parts, but throw in the labor for free. Explain to her. Why would I tell you a part is bad and offer to change it at no charge, if it really isn't bad? She might get it, you may get paid something anyway and gain a life long customer who will tell everyone she talks to how you treated her (more business) and you could end up saving a life and making a good old friend. It's just a thought, but I wish it was a law that anyone running a business that deals with the public, be required a certain amount of free work, depending on the profitability of their business. So you and two other mechanics or helpers, set her up for a Sunday afternoon and tag team her car at just the cost of parts and knock it out in a couple hours. A couple of Sunday afternoons like that and your golden. Reread this post and sleep on it. Oh and don't forget who told you, because I work hard for my money also and I am close to retiring near a mechanic who does just that, if I want to be able to afford to drive. ANY vehicle that is clearly THAT unsafe, should have it's sticker scraped off, and towed. The STATION that issued that sticker should have all inspections suspended for 30 days for each and every SAFETY VIOLATION. (I don't want to be killed by one of these Lick 'em &Stick 'em death traps) I hear that here in Ma, they've started requiring VIDEO monitoring of inspections. I know it's got issues. I'm fixing it. but I NEED a sticker now! WHATEVER the reason. unsafe is unsafe. Period. EVERY driver has a responsibility to keep their car SAFE for themselves AND everyone else on the road. I've grown to HATE the idea of people bringing their car to the place that will pass anything. just to result in catastrophic failure a few miles down the road.

In California, it's smog test only, no vehicle inspection like N. Y. and Massachusetts.
Even in Ca, there's smog test shops that pass a failing vehicle. Just look at the state site where they fine shop owners and techs. I've seen more than 5000. 00 per shop and/or tech and loss of smog test license! It's not worth it! In t he City Fleet shops, the vehicle stays with us till it's fixed!
Most smog tests normally pass. Ya, I've had some that needed repairs, and it felt good afterwards, knowing, it's running like it should be! That coffin you were driving should be crushed or it's parts recycled! Just my opinion.

You cannot take responsibility outside your own realm. The fact that the lady does not understand the machine she owns is NOT your problem, but hers. Just do the MAF, tell her that her car has to be scrapped soon as it is unsafe to drive. If she does not want that, you could either ignore it, or call the police to have her car taken off the road. I would do that. Sorry to say. But I could not live with the thought she would kill somebody else with that car because of something you saw coming. One customer less. Yes. One more enemy? Maybe. But one clean conscience.

Legally, be careful. Personal experience here. '69 Mustang came into the shop for an alignment, ball joints were shot and wrote him an estimate. He said it was too expensive and left. 2 miles down the road, he crossed railroad tracks and rf lower ball joint came apart. He wrecked.
I don't remember if it went all the way to court, but the shop did pay for all repairs.
From that point on, if any car was unsafe to drive, we offered a free tow either across the street or to their house if local, but we WOULD NOT let them drive it off our lot.

Ive had a p0102 code on my acaida every since i did the timing chains and vvt vales on it replaced mass air like a dummy newp same code pops up almost instantly figured maybe bad ground checked all grounds seemed to be good but guess im going to try hat test light ideal guessing its just a headlight bulb and wiring cut off a junk vehicle

Eric, you have to tell the older lady that her car is not safe to drive, even if she becomes distrustful and wants nothing more to do with your shop. If it was really hard for you to drive it, I don't know how she does it. I would hate to see her hurt/killed, as well as some other driver.

I can say you are the man I wish my wife could have gone to while I was gone to sea. In 94 I moved ashore for various reasons. But two interactions with garages certainly concerned her. I think we should always consider our customers to be our friends and family. They are some ones.

04 Silverado, get the p0102 code. Truck idles poorly and surges when cold start, when the outside temperature drops to 60 or below the truck idles high 1, 000 rpm. Replaced MAF and stiff having the same problem (AA Ignition brand aftermarket MAF, should I put an OEM DELPHI?

I have a 2005 Hyundai Tucson I have codes po102 and po 138 it says mass or volume airflow circuit low input o2 HTR Cat Eva DTC severity car will start but wont idle long and dies out. Replaced the MAF sensor last year dont know what to start with first any ideas?
