Yep, sometimes you gotta roll your own.
The welded-on horizontal exhaust hanger on my 2004 Chevy Cavalier rusted clean off. They don't sell clamp-on horizontal hangers. Two regular U-bolt clamps/hangers welded on each side of a bent rod of steel out of the scrap pile worked perfectly.
Had to be extremely careful grinding off the weld nugget of the remaining OEM rod, however. A slip and the old corroded exhaust would likely develop a through-hole.
To keep the new clamps from possibly crushing the age-worn exhaust pipe, a short section of new stainless steel cheater pipe was slit in half length-wise. These two halves protected the welded clamp/hanger from crushing the exhaust pipe.
With twenty minutes of scrap pile picking and simple fabrication, the exhaust lives on to get me down the road for another couple of years or so.
Retail shops walk a thin line on baling wire repairs, however. So, I understand why some places refuse to do them.

This video is a great example of why after 10-15 years your car is going to the crusher. While I understand why the government instituted emission laws. But they didnt have enough fore thought about the impact those laws would put on the public. So, if you cant fix it. even though it runs fine. Just because there is a light on. Your going to have to spend 20-30, 000 for a new car that will end up in the same situation at some point. Just cracks me up. We need to learn to buy pre fuel injection cars. And keep them alive. Anything past obd1 is a wast of money! This customer is just lucky they found someone that would go the extra. Most shops would just say its going to the scrap pile.

I worked on a 1990 Plymouth Voyager with a rear brake proportion valve mounted to the leaf spring (weird setup based on ride height) It was leaking, and corroded down to the bottom of the brake tube fittings. That proportion valve is no longer in existence, and what I could see easily cost a couple of hundred dollars even if it was. I replaced it with a brake proportion valve for the 1999 model year, and ended up re-doing the brake tubes and routing. Suffice it to say, you have to do what you have to do, and the repair worked flawlessly. The vehicles weigh near the same, so I saw no issue with the conversion, just the 1990 won't have ride height proportioning.

One cannot help but wonder, how many perfectly good vehicles are thrown away before their time, due to these ridiculous emissions rules. We have a province here in Canada, being congratulated for their anally strict climate control opinions, thrust onto all the rest of the country. whilst every day, dumping millions of pure effluent into the St. Lawrence river. I came from an era where vehicles were thankfully, NOT composed of 50% mechanics and 50% computer controlled, lockout climate robots. Half of the plastic garbage mechanisms added to the modern car cause more pollution and added overall cost, by their very overuse!

When my water inlet elbow developed a small crack I was surprised to learn it had been discontinued by GM despite only being 9 years old. I might have been able to JB weld it but it was U Pull R Parts to the rescue. Nowadays I could probably get someone to 3D print me one out of some high temp plastic.

There's a small shop down the road that installs stereos and does remote starts. Outside there are always some lowered civics with fat exhaust tips and lots of negative camber. I wonder how many customers he provides to the local garages (some of who have very good mechanics.

Nice fix - I used this method for a window motor on my subaru. i believe it was a ford labeled part like half the price of the subaru one, but looked identical, but different connector. gambled and ordered it, soldered on my old connector, works fine.

It should be the same as the one for the Chevy Tracker with the 2. 5. Rock Auto doesn't cross them, but it looks exactly the same, including the plug for the harness. They carry the unit for the Tracker for 36 still (Oct 2019)

What impresses me Eric is not only your skill but your compassion. I hear you often say It'd be a shame for the owner to have to buy a new car for the price of a.
Good on ya, as the Aussies (or is it Ozzies) say.
