my car idles at 12. 9 when i coldstart even in 90 heat, its up to 13. 6. driving around 13. 3 or 13. 2, i tend to idle alot I go to roll down the windows or hold to put on some draw the volts go down a little bit but go back up, then I release the draw it goes up and then back down again to around 12. 9 volts. Ive never seen my car hit 14 volts ever. only 13. 6 after the car starts when cold. Car starts and runs fine its always been this way. 2013 mazda 6 2. 5l u think anything is wrong, I can put everything on in the car at idel car stays at 12. 9 as u put loads on or off the meter goes up and down alittle But it always ends up at 12. 9 V could be off a volt the meter Im using is from my pioneer radio head unit OBd2 touch screen Volt gauge.

First of all, are you a descendant of, or related to, Walt Disney? Your drawings are very good, make people laugh, and if ever syndicated, may give you a second backup career! Just adore that fan belt and fan / pulley drawing. And I continue. your theory lesson is commendable. as well as the correct checks to make to determine a faulty alternator. You earned your days pay. Mrs. O. can go grocery shopping now. Well done!

I just changed mine in my 2007 dodge grand caravan, i got that whining noise in mine and finally the battery light came on and my hvac speed dimmed with deceleration. leave it to chrysler, changing it was a pain, removal of the egr valve and 3 bolts on the alt, one being a pain in the ass. but now worry free!

They should just have a device hooked up to a huge touch screen for your radio that allows you to look at every diagnostic in your vehicle. From engine temperature to whether or not you're back brake lights are functioning to your CO2 sensor going bad. I mean why hide it from the customer.

Once the brushes wear out they lose contact with the slip rings & start bouncing around a bit which causes inductive spikes to blow the electronic voltage regulator up.
The solution is to replace the voltage regulator, brushes & slip rings if they're excessively worn!

QUESTION: People tell me that an alternator won't charge a battery, BUT. The average alt. puts out 14. 5 volts into a 12 volt battery. So where does 2. 5 volts go? I've jumped dead batterys and let the car run for 5 minutes and it'll restart over and over. Input?

I disagree. 0. 3 volts drop in a cable is too much; the alternator will be working harder, therefore it will wear out sooner. Replace that cable, even use a bigger cable if necessary to lower the voltage drop in it. Just my opinion. Well done with the tutorial.

I am positive from my experience from the women I know and soy boys who go to a shop if it was a loose connection or bad cable the shop would still say they replaced the alternator. Lots of unscrupulous mechanics out there. Glad to see your not one of them.

We all know an average tech would change the alternator, if the alternator was not the problem they would have told the customer You have a bad alternator as well as the thing that actually went wrong. Which they would have found after.
