I show you how I like to identify a failing or failed catalytic converter and then verify the repair once I am finished. Lewis: Your videos are so nice and provide us with so much information. I have watched many of them. I have a question I was hoping someone would see this and be able to answer. I have a 2004 Nissan Sentra with the 1. 8 engine. It has around 150k on it and my wife uses it every day. I have a persistent P0011 code, which is something about the timing to far advanced. This has been going on for about 3 years. I had it to the dealer and they told me it needed a timing chain. And they have seen this problem before but not in no 150k of course they wanted a fortune to fix it and I told them no. I have a friend I know that has been working on cars for years at house and he told me to order a Nissan chain and gears and a tensioner and he would do the work for me. He did the work and it is running like it did when it was new. However this code keeps coming back. He said to use Nissan cam and crank sensors and I have done that too. I ordered the factory parts off e bay. The car had cheap sensors in it from auto zone. Is there anything else I can check? What else can cause this issue? It doesn't use one drop of oil either and this car fits my wife so well and she loves it. She is a nurse who travels around the county to her patients homes to help them. Any ideas anyone? thank you so much Carl Jenkins

Great video as usual. Quick rundown of the OSC test. Get the cats nice and hot. Let the engine idle and slowly add propane until short term fuel trim hits -20, not causing any misfires or stalling. Take the propane away quickly while watching you O2 sensors. With a good catalytic converter, your downstream O2 sensors response will be delayed more than two seconds behind the upstream sensors because the cats are storing the oxygen from the sudden lean condition. Defective catalytic converters won't store O2 and the downstream O2 sensor jump up within two seconds of the upstream. This test works with af ratio sensors also.

Hey, don't dis on the Legendary Dodge HEMI! Remember back in 1969 when those Dodge HEMI'S were literally doing full lap laps around the Ford & Chebby's? Yeah, I remember it too! Hey, do you remember when they set nearly every drag racing record in US history? I remember that too! Never talk shit about a Mopar, history has a memory! Oh, and didn't you say you broke down and bought a Jeep, thought I heard that? Maybe your wife has better taste than you. lol, she's probably even a secret Richard Petty fan, she just don't wanna break your heart! ;)

I really appreciate you making these videos. I have watched a ton of them just for general learning and this one is specific to what my truck is doing. It's nice too see how you go out of your way to fully verify the problem instead of just throwing some parts at it and hoping it works. You also show us and explain the diagnostic process so that we can know what we are looking at. The comedy side is a huge bonus. Thank you sir. Now I can go dig into my truck

Dejavu for me, customer has a 2006 Taurus with the same symptoms and codes from your Shooting The breeze video, there was also PO420 as well, graphed the O2 on the Autel and it looks just like what you have on this Commander. The Taurus has California Emissions so you can imagine her reaction when I told her she has to spend another 400. 00 for the Cat and all 4 struts are bad. Inspection is due next month.

Love your stuff! Question on a 2012 Acadia, had a friend replace his bank 1 cat and 02 sensors but still getting code P0420. I'm thinking maybe timing is off, is there a way to check that? No other codes showing. FYI I dont think the proper diagnostic tests were done before this work was completed.

Makes me relive my old Dealership days over. Very good explanation of the diagnosis and follow up. I enjoy all of your videos. I will eventually make my way up to visit your shop, just to say Hey and spend some money with you. Keep up the good work.

I don't know about anyone else but I miss the frequent longer videos, I understand this is a busy time of year and it is hard for you to make the longer vids, I can't wait for their return!

I learned a lesson along time ago. Never never loan out tools whether its a socket wrench, or a scan tool. Never loan out tools. Always get burned when doing so. Its just not worth it.
