Snowblower Engine Surging

Snowblower Engine Surging

I have a look at a snowblower that came in with a customer complaint of a surging engine. Pretty common issue on small engines and usually a pretty cheap and easy fix. Michael: I had a similar craftsman 2-cycle snow blower, did the whole carb clean and found some serious black gunk in there. Cleaned out most of the jets with #22 guage wire and carb clean. Got it to run but it would eventually start surging after 5 to 10 min. Poked around a little bit longer and noticed the atmospheric vent was crusty with white crusty aluminum after removing the Welch plug. Clean it out with a larger paper clip and waala! Fixed the problem. Runs great

Its amazing how people dont know how to run the equipment they buy. Yeah the fuel system gets gunked up and the equipment gets beat up pretty fast on those small engines. However, it was running just fine. They just didnt know how to operate the choke on it. Such a silly and simple thing that caused them to bring their snowblower to a mechanic. Its just so silly.
Its like the people that see their check engine light and freak out. Like the engine just blew or something. Instead of doing some simple troubleshooting to find their gas cap is open. They bring it to a mechanic who charges them 90 to diagnose it for something that simple.
Nothing against you. Youre a great and honest mechanic. Im a mechanic in the Air Force and I also run a small auto shop as a side business. We got to make our money. Theyre paying for our time. I almost feel bad charging people for simple things like this. Stuff they could do with a basic tool set in their own garage.

Howdy sir! Thanks for posting this video as it really helped me diagnose the problem with my snowblower. I have the same model but a couple of years older. I did what you always say in cars and checked for fuel, air, and spark. Found out the spark plug wasn't sparking so I replaced it. Still no spark so I replaced the ignition coil. Finally got spark back and since you show how the carburetor is disassembled and cleaned I went ahead and cleaned it. Runs like new. One pull start. Thanks you for the assistance!

I will sit here and watch you diagnose and fix anything! You are a naturally entertaining person and you create excellent edutainment. Even if the video is a repeat idea from a prior, I will still watch it. Hey you may have to approach diagnostics from a different angle than before, or maybe you have gotten new tools since then that changes the approach. I agree with other viewers. whatever comes in, I would love to watch you fix it. It inspires me to go out and fix stuff!

One thing you might consider is to add a fuel shut off valve so the gas can be run out of the carb. They are cheap and I have added them to all of my engine driven equipment. Also, put a fuel filter to keep trash out of the carb. Change the oil and plug once you get the carb cleaned out.

A good car mechanic is hard to find. Eric O is the best. Last November I put on my SMA shirt and did the front brakes on my 2010 F150. I cleaned everything up real good and used the purple caliper grease. It was the first time in my life I ever looked forward to doing brakes. Big Ed.

Some needle and seats have a rubber seat, and go away when air is applied through the fuel input side. Just be mindful if it starts leaking through the carb after cleaning, you need to check if ya sent that seat into orbit.

Safty tip for you.
Remove spark plug before putin it up on table. I saw a guy loose 4 fingers bam bam bam bam as the fingers hit the wall.
Was a mower--it started to vibrate off edge of table. he grabbed it.

I just bought a snow blower for 45 that had the same problem. I did the same thing you did and she runs like a champ. I guess the guy that sold me the snow blower should have watched your video.

I'm a dirt bike guy, and every can of gas I have gets a shot of Marvel Mystery Oil and Seafoam. I've done it for years and I've never had a problem with bikes lawn mower snow blowers, nada
