Theres a TSB for this in all autos of similar years put that silver ring back on the shifter handle as soon as you take it off and youll never lose that mother lover of a clip just install as one piece put the car in neutral when removing and installing the shift cable its easier to reach and if you look on the trans position switch there is a hole on the switch and the trans that you can put a drill bit in to line up neutral in case you move that inner adjustment nut these things have a high failure rate and in legacy outbacks they dont offer the plate guide by itself its the full shifter but those seem less prone to breaking

He is absolutely right about those TV mechanic shows that make everything look soooooo easy. Notice, they never work on everyday driven vehicles that have caked on dirt, mega rust or vehicles that have been butchered by some jack-leg before you. It's all editing and camera tricks. But, I still watch them. Just remember, enjoy it for what it is, entertainment and not a how-to guide.

LOL Sucks for the next guy. Actually, when your working on a vehicle and the previous guy torques these fasteners so tight it strips out the brake bracket threads or causes the brake pin to snap. This pisses you off, especially when the last guy is a certified mechanic and he should know better. Just happened to me. Good job a lot of detail.

That micro switch carrier and its complicated, deeply buried wrapping is one of the most unlikely design solutions I've ever seen. Time to assemble Subaru minus key interlock, 17 hours. Assembly & installation of key interlock, another 4 hours. Turnover of key interlock assemblers per month, 100% (exit factory, screaming)

Thank you for posting the ONLY video I have found on YouTube on how to change out that switch! The wife's Crosstrek has been trying to hold her key for months and I have had the part with no idea how to get it swapped out. Thanks to your video I swapped out that assembly and no more stuck key. THANK YOU!

My biggest problem is remembering the order in which it all goes back together. Invariably, I have to take a couple of components off again because something should have gone on first. I admire your ability to remember the order of disassembly so that you know the order of reassembly. Great vids.

On those clips, I normally put a piece of bright colored tape on them. 1 my eyesight is bad. 2 my eyesight is bad. : ) Maybe this will help another. down the line. Oh and putting the tape on is far quicker than searching for over an hour. Thank you Eric.

holding my breath. O' Man. I think I'm thankful I was an HDR/W on heavy Equipment.
I would had botched that up from the get go. I'm thinking your the only man in a thousand Square miles capable
of doing what you done with that shifter.
