Hyundai i30 (Elantra) 2017 hatchback review - Mat Watson

Hyundai has announced that the new i30 will go on sale on March 1 in the UK, but I was invited to grab a sneak peak before release in sunny Spain. The Korean firm hopes to rival the ever-popular Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf, sporting a brand new look and a host of new safety technology. In fact, Hyundai has 'done a Peugeot' and tricked out the new i30 in chrome - but is this enough for the i30 to lead the stacked hatchback class? Previous iterations drew criticism for a dull driving style and weak engines, so has Hyundai addressed these features? To make matters tougher, the i30 will have to convince buyers to skip the premium SUV class in favour of the smaller hatchback class. Find out if the Hyundai i30 succeeds in this 4k review

It's amazing how far Hyundai has come. At my second job, where my job is literally to drive cars about, ranging from old clunkers to DB10 Astons. I got the chance to drive quite a few Hyundais and I liked most of them. They are comfortable, they drive well, a bit down on power. but whatever. And the DCT gearbox is brilliant. Shifts quickly at the right points and has manual mode so you can fool around. I also like the amount of tech you get for your money. Lane assist, blindspot monitor, reversing camera, digital radio and tons of other goodies. Also the interior is a nice place to be. It doesn't remind you that you are driving a cheaper car constantly like the interior in the Fiat Tipo does for example.

I currently have a Golf GTI mk7 but I've been following the i30N for some time now. I can't wait to test drive it because it does look good. But the price would have to beat the likes of the Golf GTI and Audi S3 to make it worthwhile. If it costs just as much as the German rivals then you may as well get the VW or Audi because you get a much better badge for the same money.
However I doubt it will be cheap enough. I did have interest in the 308 GTi but when I learned how much it was, I knew there was no way I'd choose it over the Golf.

I don't buy the look of most of the cars of this generation. They look clumsy, or dull, or caricatursih to me. Those oversized grills, shrunken headlights, exaggerated air vents. And the registration plate slapped onto the huge grill, with no frame, like in this one. There are lots of exceptions though, like Citroen C3, or most Mercedes models, that keep it stylish. But Audi A6, which I used to love, is now a faceless nightmare, with an outline of LED lights the only discernible feature,

Saying german cars are the best is a load of rubish its cliche!

biased review. i'm getting one cash tomorrow. best decision i could have made. i think people need to be pragmatic when buying cars. and with the warranty, all the extras that Hyundai offer as standard and the build quality is should be a no brainier. but noooooooo, people will still hang on VW's dick for no freaking reason.

poor guy has probably been promised a new suit if he can run down a Korean competitor. lot of hard work to build one, and lot of hard earned dough to buy one, show some respect. if youre a true auto fab, then not every positive review has to be about an Aston Martin.

The car has a pretty bad motor and there is a reason why it costs less than the same class cars like a golf, the fuel consumption is worst than a big lexus v8, and it tells that engineers on this car hasn-t worked as much as other cars the same class

I dont get all the bashing on this car. It's an economy car that is practical, looks good outside and inside. Even if you do not like the design you got to admit. it looks of quality unlike the older korean cars. Wish this sold in my country.

Everything must be damped! :) On the serious side though, the person who would buy this is a very smart person who wants reliability, decent performance and good value for money from a car! These things are what Hyundai is offering!

Actually it's the x-designer of BMW. KAI is the one that has the x-designer of Audi. This will definitely be a high seller here in the states. The market calls here for SUVs and now hatchbacks too, sedans are suffering over here
