Volvo has released a plug-in hybrid version of the XC40 - introducing the Volvo XC40 Recharge T5! It combines an electric motor with the engine to produce 262hp, which will help it reach 60mph in 7. 3 seconds. But that's not where this new XC40 makes its claim to fame - this hybrid small SUV has a claimed fuel economy of 141mpg! But, as ever with hybrid cars, such an mpg doesn't come cheap, with the Recharge T5 having a price tag of almost -41, 000! So, is it worth it? Stick with Mat for his latest review to find out!

I have for couple of years the first ever real life PHEV, the Volvo V60 PHEV: 2, 4 liter, 5 cylinder turbocharged diesel 215hp driving the front + 70hp electric motor driving the rear. This is the best car I ever had! The real life pure electric mode gives me ca 35km range, which is enough to cover my work comute and moving around the town. Some weeks I don't even use the diesel engine at all. On the other hand I love to switch to sport mode to feel the 285hp time to time: -) My long term average is 4, 8 l/100km. The car has its own charger on board, all you need is a electric socket, but I have installed a wall box in my garrage. I can hardly imagine for what I can replace this rocket. Only Mercedes is making diesel phew now.

Dear Mat hi! It's been quite a long time that I'm watching your reviews. They're great!
Unfortunately, your team can't help me find a better deal for a car since I'm in Greece.
Well. .. I would like to ask you a few questions about XC40.
The Recharge T4 R-Design has paddle shifters on the steering wheel whereas the Inscription one doesn't?
I'm about to decide between XC40 T4 Recharge and a BMW X1 25e (in Greece as well there is a tax benefit for choosing PHEV corporate cars.
I like the way XC40 looks but I think that BMW -feels- better on the road.
I would really appreciate your view on this.
Thank you very much in advance.
Keep up the good. .. reviews!
Best,
Tassos.

Don't get it. if you don't charge it, is it not in gas hybrid mode driving? Only 31 MPG, is lousy. The 2016 to 2018 PHEV CMAX Fords get 20 miles fully electric, and 40 MPG in Hybrid gas mode thereafter. I have had three of them and with some long trips yearly of over 500 miles and 2 or 3 100 mile trips a month, I have never averaged less than 70 MPG overall from day one of the cars. So, what's wrong here? Is this not in hybrid when not charged, or the charge is gone? Does anyone have an answer for that?

Volvo has stated that all its vehicle will be electric by 2030. They better step on the - cough - gas. this xc40 doesn't seem to move the ball down the field very much at all. the electric range is meager and advertised economy doesn t match real life. pass.

Damn the xc40 recharge does 60 liters per 100 km. Thats 3 times worse than the w16 in bugatti veyrons. --- and 141 mpg is on the other side of the spectrum at 1. 67 l/100km. I think yall used mpg -> kmpl formula but intended on using the mpg -> l/100km

5: 55 since it's a small battery fast charging would cause faster battery degradation. Most hybrids only support 3. 6kw charging (some do 7. 2kw) as the expected use case is to commute in EV during the day and charge at night at home

I might have missed this, but is the car fun to drive. I am thinking of switching from an Evoque to the XC40. Do advice Mat since you have driven both models. Btw, am a big fan of the quirkiest car review on YT. Cheers.

Please Mat, could you also include the metric measurements? A quick Google search will tell you just how few countries use imperial. - It's so annoying to have to calculate everything.
Good vid though. Thanks

The problem with a plug in hybrid is you have all the moving parts, maintenance, and wear of a gas engine plus a battery. With full electric you don-t. Might as well go full electric and skip the repairs.

Volvo really needs to get their game together! Hyundai has a PHEV that goes 30+ miles on just battery and gets 55 - 60 MPG over all and has a four cylinder engine to boot. And it only cost about $30, 000.
