It's not just that. People who buy this type of cars are not city bankers. If they were they'll not go for a class or a3, let alone this beemer.
From the 4 the merc is considerably more expensive to maintenance with the beemer good second. Plus I've never heard of a proper beemer dealer.
Then it comes to reliability. This is more down to engine choices, driving style and gear box. The crappy autos they put in the entry level vehicles is just awful. You better with manuals. Again depend of where you drive too. Stop, start traffic is painful with manual.
I'll stick with buying second hand 3-4 years old vehicles of this class with more goodies for sub 10 grand and pottle around with them for another 4-5.
Don't forget Germans come very bare unless you have deep pocket.

Test drove all of these plus a Leon FR DSG
My thoughts are:
Interior -
1 series M sport (by a mile)
Golf Style
A class AMG (looks good but so tacky up close)
A3 S Line
Leon FR
Driving -
1 Series
Leon
A3
A Class
Golf
Exterior - (so subjective)
A Class
1 Series
Golf
A3
Leon
I obviously ordered the 1 series. Your experience may differ

1- those cars with the black roof liner look horribly dark. Not sure why people would want that.
2- A good reason to get an A3 was always that it was more practical then a BMW or Mercedes. now it is not.
3- When you get the A3 in the sport trim you get a very sporty. folding centre seat? And they say that the Germans don't have a sense of humour!

Wonder what people here make of electric cars. To me we-re being primed for a piss take. No engine, not many moving parts, very little to service and even the R&D isn-t that big-. Yet-we-re being led to believe we should expect to pay 40. 50. 60k. Horse shit people. The AM industry is set to loose out big time so they-re getting ready to cover themselves.

So in the last medium sized car test the Ford Focus was rated better than the Golf but when pitched against the premium badge snob brands its the Golf thats pitched again Mercedes, BMW and Audi. Would-ve be interested to see how the likes of an Astra, Focus and Leon etc would pitch against them since there-s little to separate them from the Golf.

I think I-ll stick with the vw, my dad this 650k with his, design ages better and the shape gives you more space. All around the best car, 2. 0 diesel manual for me, I-m not racing anyone. Wish it cost 20k euros like the previous ones, now the polo is on that price redicolous how cars got more expensive

Need some advice, I currently drive a 2018 leon fr petrol mostly city driving. Considering a bmw 1 series shadow edition and was wondering if it is worth the extra money, I know bmw has definitely the better cabin etc. But for similar year/mileage it's 5/6k more. Is it worth it? Any advice appreciated

The bmw 1 series is now I rip off from today. 1200 for the leather which was standard. All extras have gone up. Cars gone up in price. Pulled out of my purchase. If I ordered yesterday I'd have had twice the car they said I could have today. They took 4k worth of extras off it and its came to 3k more

7: 34 Exactly the opposite oppinion! Personally i really, REALLY hate that cheap plastic flimsy stick that mercedes offers you as a gear shift selector.
Much, MUCH rather all the other center options.
So much that because of that i just go right into Audi, BMW, or VW.

Seems to be Golf is the best one. It's simply the most reliable while offering like 95% of all the others provides in terms of driving fun and tech, all while being cheaper, and in some cases even more premium inside ( cough cough Audi.
