Funny thing i am engineer of this - the secret mostly developed on Embedded linux. We keep the kernel of unix then develop our interface on embedded software (you call firmware. There are too many microcontrollers in today's cars. Lights, sensors and many others have their own microprocessor and peripherals, sometimes a full microcontroller and additional peripherals. They connected the operating system with sophisticated transistor to transistor level communication technology. Normally you can build simple operations system on even basic controllers but microcontrollers have limited capacity, it can't handle all of the car. So we design our pcb s and use unix scripting, sometimes we use QT for designing our interface but many companies have their own systems. Then you control your car. We actually implement a good machine to machine system example in your cars but you mostly use user interface as a controller (set your sit position etc. Actually it's an good example for base of technology. You can build anything with these steps. You can develop a router or modem or rocket or tv box: ) if you want to be one, you need to know about computer science and electronic engineering: ) captain out

The car manufacturers, need to look how these cars are put together, duplication is everywhere, most the tech is well over a decade old, most cars could run on a couple of raspberry pi device's, car manufacturers spend 800 dollars per car on this outdated silicon, it's like they have been pulling things off a shelf and have no idea how they are put together, it's similar to building a home kitchen, you buy things off the shelf to build it, costing thousands, while a kitchen on static caravan has been factory designed, fully working effective kitchen for hundreds, clearly there is knowledge gap in the automotive sector and some that mass production know how has gone, some tech geek's at some point need to show these guys how it is done.

The chip shortage is indeed due to majority of the production line slots going towards computer manufacturers. New phone launches were also delayed by a few months and Sony is still struggling to manufacture the PlayStation. First preference now is for health care devices, then to computer manufacturers.
The other reason for the shortage is most of the chip manufacturers are fabless i. e. they outsource the microchip manufacturing to foundries like TSMC, Global Foundries etc. This demand has put a lot of strain on the resources.
Some companies like Intel have internal foundries so they are not as badly affected but then again, I am not aware of many Intel SoCs being used in embedded systems.

Would also like to point out that -tech firms- don-t have the -microchips- required either! Haven-t done for a while!
As perfect reference, look at the current pc Graphics Card (-GPU-) shortages.
Just trying to point out it isn-t us, the tech nerds, that are the whole cause of the problem
Also, p. s, better examples of the -tech firms- that actually did manage to sell a load of stuff before they also got annihilated by the semiconductor shortage would have been -AMD- or -NVidia-

I'd read some reports on this subject but appreciate the depth of your video and explanation of events leading to the shortage. I'm taking delivery of my Hyundai Kona in 2 weeks time. but not sure yet if the Zappi home charger I've ordered will be installed by then. as production of these has also been affected by the chip shortage! -May have to resort to public charging or even the granyy charger if necessary.

The thing is. There is currently another crypto-boom going on right now primarily due to Etherium.
But soon Etherium will switch away from mining-based and instead be stake-based, meaning mining farms won't empty every store of graphics cards. Leaving the supply for normal consumers, which in turn reduces total demand and more fab-time can be dedicated to larger nodes like the ones used in cars.

What he forgot to mention is that the company that makes the chips is Taiwan is owned by the America, because America makes the machines that make the machines for example the only other country to make them are Sweden but Sweden has a license from America to have that machine. Crazy how so many people bash America but they own and invented the technology we use today, those chips are the future!

The computer in the new Tesla model S P100D is perhaps the most powerful of any vehicle. In fact the computer is so powerful in that Tesla that it can and does support games for kids in the back seats! Plus whilst doing that it does a whole lot of things at the same perceptible time like control all it's functions and allow communications and navigational help.

I hope they will start on making more simple cars, with less unnecesary tecnology. For me, pesonaly, The simpler - The better. No lane assist, no sign recognition, and othrer. Just a car, please.
One example: how about a present day Mercedes W123, Best car ever. Why? Because it is a simple car.

I-ve heard that all Volvo XC 90-s will be electric/gas hybrids with the 2022 model years. If turns out to be the case that will be my leading contender as gas mileage is a big consideration for me in new cars. If not the XC I will give the new Pathfinders a look.
