At the very beginning of the video, the claim was made that self driving cars -ain't never gonna happen-. and I assume the rest of the video is trying to give arguments why. this is what I am responding to
1: 00 to 2: 18 - this whole section is just -Tesla isn't fully self driving as of now-
Obviously a terrible argument, and in case you need to know why, just imagine the same type of argument being made in the past to show that -TVs will never display color because right now they only can display black and white-
2: 57 to 4: 00 - this section basically points out promises that have not been delivered
It's again more of the same -argument- as from the previous segment, but this time specifically focusing on broken promises. People being overly optimistic about something and being wrong is just an example of overly optimistic people. This does NOTHING to show why fully self-driving cars will never happen
5: 10 - I can very much agree with this, the current state of self-driving cars isn't fully automatic and thus should not be treated as such. Its a huge shame to see people doing this. I agree that you could blame the industry marketing the cars as -self-driving- even though they cant actually fully drive by their selves.
7: 05 to 7: 55 - this section argues that computers are not good at dealing with unknowns and the human brain is much better at that
This is best argument so far, and is a fair concern, but I do think its wrong.
AI research HAS been making those advancements and been able to produce programs that do things we would have only ever thought humanly possible before.
These programs, (such as image recognition as a simple example) are built to be flexible and solve vague and complex problems, and they are becoming more and more adaptable as we improve it more and more. It can only get better and all it needs to do is be better than humans. Humans get sleepy, angry, drunk, distracted, dumb, confused, cant process information very fast, only have our 2 front eyes (vision ofc improved with mirrors) and can only see visible light
With machines, we dont have those problems, but where humans have the advantage is being able to adapt to lots of situations and do basic creative problem solving and decision analysis. We are making strides in this problem with AI research, and to say that its NEVER going to happen I think is a bit extreme. I think you have to at least admit the possibility of it happening. I personally am optimistic, but I think its gonna take a while
7: 55 onwards - this last section points out the legal complications with self driving cars
I dont really see how this is an argument thats supposed to demonstrate why self driving cars will NEVER happen. Yes its definitely a tricky issue and is gonna slow the process down a lot, but this isn't going to completely stop it. fully self driving cars that are safer than humans driving cars would be something I would hope LOTS of people would support and want. Imagine how many lives it could save? I think this motivation is enough to push us to come to SOME sort of legal solution, though I am not sure what that would be. I definitely dont think legal issues are gonna prevent self-driving cars altogether

If there is no timetable - this guy is 100% wrong. Perhaps if he would say, it won't happen in the next 10 years, fine. First of all, this self-driving technology is not created equal. Tesla for instance did not use Lidars which are arguably superior to optic eye cameras - when the white trailer accident happened. Some self driving cars have many Lidar systems, others just a few or one. and yes, it may take 20 years before self driving cars are superior to human drivers and on the roads everywhere but that moment in time will happen someday. And one day in the far future, it will become illegal for human drivers to be on open roads. There will be closed circuits for human drivers like horsebackriding now. Just think at the extreme cost of a personal car sitting in your driveway or your workplace parking garage. A car sits unused more than 90% of the time, on average. It will be much better to be able to call a car service to pick you up to go wherever you need to go. and not have to drive. this way, your work day can start as soon as you enter the self driving car which will take you to your office. You will be paid from the time you enter the car and not from the time you enter the office. The car won't be a car but an office on wheels. Big difference and incentive for people to start using this technology in the future, whenever it is ready to go. And if you need a car to go out on Friday night, it will be a bar on wheels, not a car. If you need a video gaming car, fine. call one of those. Etc. It will happen. there is no doubt in my mind and the minds of people much smarter than this guy and I!

This is incorrect now, AI is at a level on self learning where you can feed in rules and let the computer get on with it. In fact this is so good people are actually learning game techniques from AI experiments in games like GO.
I do think given time this sort of AI will surpass humans on simple driving. They are already well past us on ability to monitor all around and can have multiple processors dealing with all of the different things.
The law side really annoys me. Self driving AI should come under the same legal stance as ABS or any other computerised aids in a car. If it goes wrong on your car and you have an accident as a result it comes out of your insurance. If this is found to be an underlying issue with the vehicle there may be a recall but in truth there is rarely compensation for the owner.
In a day and age where so much on cars is computerised, this shouldn't need much amendment, but you can bet your life the legal industry will do what they can to make it so in order to line their pockets. In truth the number of accidents would reduce so much they are scared they might have to find honest jobs.
I like driving so welcome the self driving technology days. It can do the boring stuff or let me enjoy beautiful scenery, then I take over for the fun bits.

Driverless cars are still learning and with time they will be better than humans. see, when a car(machine learning) is learning it makes mistakes and it informs other cars so that they wont make the same mistakes so the more mistakes the more it becomes better.
By now tesla fsd is doing better it can take you around the city with some small mistakes, what we need to focus on instead is how long it is going take tesla to be 100% mistake free? I predict 5-10years with its machine learning and hardware improving. It will even get more interesting once we have 5g everywhere and cars talking to each other. And trust me this will not take more than 10years, and everyone in the USA will jump on it since many people work 2 shifts and are very tired to drive.

Autonomous cars are almost USELESS in a blizzard. We just got a foot of snow over the weekend. Every intersection there was some fender bender. I stopped at a few of them to offer help if people needed it because it was a lot of snow, high winds and brutal cold. Everyone said the same thing-the auto brakes or auto lane adjust or auto steering or auto whatever failed to take action. It-s what I figured was going to happen. People are becoming completely dependent on these automated devices so when you actually have to drive the car, you-re lost. Chevy or Chrysler-I forgot which one-just came out with a hands free SUV. The car steers itself. It will only give the driver more incentive to text and not pay attention.

Tesla had a self driving team that was working on there system. Don-t remember when but that team left, and Tesla had to start from bare minimum from almost ground up. And over the past few year getting better and better ever sense.
NHTSA has a Tesla hater in charge of looking into Tesla. So yeah.
Yes in todays world it is a lie but 2years or so only edge cases are going to be a issue for self-driving vehicles.

The self-driving technology is extremely good but still way off Level 4 or 5 autonomy, but it is far more advanced than Mat suggests. However, the last 10% of technical problems often represents 90% of the work and based on the current advancements 2030 might just see level 5 availability.
Laws though will have to be adapted so those developing autonomous cars should already be paying a levy to a state fund that will finance the work required to determine who is going to ultimately be liable in an accident that involves a self-driving vehicle. If they don't then it is going to end up being funded by central taxation.

Human brains are arguably still superior but even we can't see what other road users are seeing and where they're planning to go. When unpredictable things happen, humans are slow and often make wrong decisions (like driving your car off the road to prevent hitting a bunny.
Also, just because predictions made in the past didn't come true yet, doesn't mean they will never come true. It just means the problem is hard and progress is slow. There is no theoretical reason why it wouldn't happen, though.

I have a self driving car, I drive it my-self and zero emission vehicles are a misrepresentation because of the coal used to manufacture them will take 13 years to offset that carbon footprint. By that time the battery will only be fit for a one-mile round trip to the shops, in winter, living on a hill in a flat and with no home-charging point. You'll have to decide if it's the trip to the overcrowded municipal charge point, in the middle of the night or a supermarket run.
Early adopters have been handing back their EV's because of dysfunctional charging points.

I don't really have much tech knowledge, but i can say that for self driving we need global or erea radar connection, that cars realize that there's something coming from aside or Infront of it. This is not about camera, this should be about signals and sensors and should be very sharp and effective. maybe we need next generation of Net like 6G or 7G and global nets like what Elon Musk doing like Starling.
It will take 10 till 20 years for sure.
Don't forget an AI - traffic system to control every movement ofthe cars.
