Honda Civic Type R Generations DRAG RACE

Civic Type R fans, this one s for you! We ve got our hands on every generation of Civic Type R, and they re about to face off over the quarter mile to see just how much the Type R has evolved since 2001! Now of course, it should come as no surprise that the older editions come at a disadvantage when it comes to power output. If you take a look at the original EP3, it comes with a 2-litre naturally-aspirated engine (with VTEC) that can produce 200hp and 196Nm of torque. In comparison, the all-new FL5 comes with a 2-litre turbo petrol engine that can produce 320hp and 420Nm! But of course, don t forget that they re all on a level playing field in that they re all FWD, and they re all manuals! The question is, will the new FL5 prove to be worth its eye-watering 47, 000 price tag? Filip: FN2 aged very well, and i think it will be considered as one of the greatest designs honda ever made. Doesn't have that cheap plastic tunning look, the newer models have. Too bad it's a bit heavy and slow, but it's NA, the others have turbo. There is a faster MUGEN version. FK2 looks better today, than it looked when it came out, i agree

FN2 was the real definition of all show and no go.
Compared to what the others think of Civic Type Rs or Civics in general, it's supposed to be a pocket rocket where it's light as feather and goes faster than a stabbed rat but the FN2 was none of that. It was pudgy, heavy and somehow the engine was VERY lethargic in the car. Odd that it is a K20A unit which should work extremely well for car that size, that era, even with 210bhp but it didn't.
Then across the pond, there's the FD2 from Japan which was vastly better. Yes it has 4 seats but the Japanese did not cramp it with unwanted traction control nor cruise control. All they did was drop the same K20A in there, beefen up the suspension, brakes and send it on their merry way and what a masterpiece it was. Stark contrast that a 4dr Civic Type R is beating a 2dr one. God damn irony.

FN2 is my darling by far design wise!
It looks like a space ship even now!
I do not agree it aged the worse, contrary, it aged the best in my eyes! (Subjective, taste is not up to debate)
But FN2 type R is clearly the worst of type R range!
Compared to Ep3 was heavier, lower on torque, lost rear independent suspension.
As a daily car anyone would be better served with the normal 1. 8 version!
Much more spacious than EP3, huge boot (that loss of rear independent suspension has it advantage, much better quality interior (that dashboard is from a space ship also): )

Wow, remember the days when top hot hatches had 200 BHP?
Nowadays, 200 BHP is barely warm hatch territory.
Great drag race feature though.
Seeing all those type R's together just highlights how the model became more garish with each generation, right up until the 2017 model which looked eye opening to say the least.
No wonder Honda produced a sportline version without the scaffolding on the back.
The 2023 version is a step back in the right direction.

I used to love hondas. When their spirit was spirited naturally aspirated engines. Now they just slap a turbo on it like other companies and it's gross. If they made a j series for a small 2 door that revs to 9 grand. I'd think about buying it. But making power out of a turbo motor is something I could make in my back yard. They don't have the love honda used to have. Plus yhe new cars are so ugly it makes me cringe
reply

They all sound absolutely horrible, so bad it's not even funny. Also got to drive the FN2 when it was new, what a horrible engine / narrow power band as you really had to push it make it move, just silly.
Shame they never make these with AWD, the new one would probably be really quick off the line then and nice to drive in inclement weather too. The newest one actually looks pretty good for a Civic.

Again, stop locking the cars in third gear. This proves nothing as power bands and gear ratios are different on all cars. In some of the races some of the cars might have 5 gears whilst others have 10 ) Gears. Please start using the optimal gear for the given speed for each car for every drag race. Sincerely everyone. Thank you.

I dunno what everyone talking
I own the fn2 for 5 years one of my favourite car of all time. if we eliminate the part they didn't do FK all on the engine could of
the interior the technology way ahead of time. it auto sense wipers for a 07/08 and digital dash come on.

Again, for those interested, the theoretically top-speed numbers.
Car Time /s m/s km/t mph
Civic R 2001 15, 3 53 189 118
Civic R 2010 16, 3 49 178 110
Civic R 2017 13, 8 58 210 130
Civic R 2022 14 57 207 128
Civic R 2023 14 57 207 128

Honestly I'm a big fan of the FN2 (spaceship one. i love the styling and the fact that it's the last 3-door civic type r and naturally aspirated. That plus that it's not that heavy makes it my pick despite the outright speed disadvantage.
reply

I still can't believe that the latest civic is 300% more expensive than the EP3, such an accessible car back in the day and I had one myself. Shame cars are priced for the never never market now, its a bloody scam. Great race though!
reply

You are missing the most important civic type r. The ek9 was and always will be my favourite type r. Definitely not as quick in a straight line but a blast on a track. Today I'd buy fk2 though purely because ek9 is like rocking horse poo
reply

Not a Honda fan but I think the looks have gradually got worse in each generation, the simplistic breadvan design of the EP3 is nice. 47K is ridiculous for a Honda Civic that is not that much faster than the two previous generations.
reply

I grew up with hondas, I think the soft limiter is their version of launch control at least back in the day. There s a way to get around it maybe if the car is slightly rolling idk haven t had a honda in a while
reply

1st generation is a brilliant car but the latest one looks epic. I'd honestly save a bunch of money and get the 1st gen and look after it honestly. Being Honda it's got a great reliability factor
