New Volvo XC90: You won't believe what's changed!

Volvo s 7-seater behemoth has been updated, and it has competitors like the Land Rover Discovery and Audi Q7 in its sights! But is it the smart choice? Let s find out For starters, the exterior design hasn t changed much compared to the old model. Although that s not exactly a bad thing! Sure it s pretty chunky, but what do you expect from a 7-seat SUV! Either way, seeing a few more updates would have been nice. Take a step inside, and it s a similar story! You ll find some new extra-comfortable seats up front, along with a few updates such as a wireless charging pad, but otherwise, it s all pretty similar to the old XC90. There s a large portrait infotainment screen on the dash, but to be honest, it s all a bit old-fashioned now. At least the cabin is full of soft-touch, nice materials. Under the bonnet, there s not much to choose from, with all XC90s rolling up with a 2-litre 4-cylinder engine. The range-topper is the T8 plug-in hybrid we have here, with the engine combined with an electric motor to deliver 455hp. Prices for the XC90 start from just north of 60, 000 But is it worth it? You ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

I don't understand why Volvo doesn't update their cars already. They have been exactly the same since 2015. I was recently searching for a car and liked both the new BMW 3 series and the Volvo s60, and the BMW recently facelifted the 3 series with a new modern 2023 interior, while Volvo still looks the same and starts to feel outdated a bit. This turned me away from Volvo, even though I really like how they look on the outside. Why don't they put the interior from the Polestar 2 into their cars? That car looks very similar in terms of design and minimalism, while still feeling new and fresh.

I've driven both the X5 and XC90 professionally at work to their limits.
The hyrbid XC90 is quick but can't put it's power down through the poor Volvo 4x4 system. The safety systems also can't be fully disengaged which can hinder what they're used for.
The X5 4x4 system is miles better than the Volvo but still doesn't beat Quattro. The X5 30d isn't as quick as the hybrid XC90 but is a stronger engine and more economical. Build quality of the X5 also better than the XC90.
Volvo have done well with the XC90 but still doesn't beat the X5 for reliability, drivability and quality.

Fun fact, the only way to shut off the horn sounding constantly is by pressing the button again. If you didn't know that, you will try everything inside the car to shut it off but nothing will work. Great fun at 1am waking all my neighbors up. I had to drive for 10 minutes to a country road to debug it, with the horn sounding the whole way (yeah the rest of car just works fine, with the horn sounding constantly, then call up 24 hour volvo services who after a while suggested I try pressing that button. yeah I should of read the manual, but still be warned.

You forgot to mention that one of 5 annoying things about this renewed volvo in 2023. is that its completely the same, and annoying is that we are watching video in 2023. the same thing we watched 8yrs ago. That s annoying. And specially cause all the other volvo models are also the same inside, and very much similar outside, with the same engines and platform, so watching all this for the 10th time is quite annoying.

Everyone raves about the seats but I was disappointed. The mid part of the thigh support has a rigid bar going across and the side thigh bolsters really dig into my thighs. Had to buy a seat cushion to help resolve the issue but now I don't get much heat from the seat warmers. Aside from that the seat is pretty good. I'm not even a big person so it's not that! I have the Inscription XC60.

How can a parent virtue signal while dropping off their kid when the hybrid looks the same as a standard model? One tiny badge? Nobody looks at cars when dropping off, they just don't want to get blocked in by other cars. The only people signaling are usually parents dropping off in a luxury barge or sports car. Great joke, Matt! So fresh and nuanced! Come on, I know you can do better.

Disappointed on the lack of design update, I hate the rear tail lights, just ugly. I love the fact that it's 7-seater but also hybrid, that's not common. Interior is disappointing too, lack of an update. Poor MPG, but expected with all that weight. Would love to have considered it, the new RRS out does it on the design and significant upgrades (even if it isn't 7 seater.

I think this car is extremely ugly, especially the back. The infotainment looks old, and the wool is meh.
In no way do I see this as a luxury car that should compete with BMW/Mercedes/Audi. It's definitely down market more like Mazda.
Also I love how one of the 5 things is something literally every car has lol. Not that much that is great about it it seems.

I loved this vehicle when I tested it and then I bought an x5. Why? Cus the drivetrain and driving experience matters to me and this is far too front wheel drive biased for me. Also reliability, Volvo continues to be at the bottom with Land Rover so I hope they are fixing that with this update. I have too many friends with bran new volvos in service centers sigh

Wow Cant believe the infotainment is the same, with all the complaints about no physical buttons / dials for heating you would think they would of changed it, and the infotainment layout looks like a cheap Chinese software and yes they added wireless charging but the phone looked to be half off

Great review as always but i have the same thing to report as in all of your videos matt. you do talk about infotainment systems but you mostly show the screen. you should spend a minute about sound quality - speakers etc. Especially in this car which is 10/10 for a factory system!

Pro tip: If you had a knee surgery and you are over 2 meters tall and your not allowed to bend your knee so you cant get in any seats. You can fold the 2nd row away so you can sit in the 3rd row and strech out your legs on to the back of the folded 2nd row. (saved me a lot of time)

A luxury car that didn't change for 8 years but the price is an arm and a leg. And if you don't have a problem with the turbocharged engine, you have problems with the supercharging: ) So unreliable. Hopefully the hybrid will be better.

It is certainly a very good looking SUV. Only thing that scares me is the drivetrain and it's reliability. I would be terrified to own one out of warranty. It seems bouncy and has more road noise than I would expect.
