BMW v Mercedes v Audi v VW: Which luxury small car is BEST?

When it comes to luxurious small family cars, it doesn t get better than the Mercedes A-Class, Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Volkswagen Golf. The question is if you re in the market for a car such as this, which should you go for? Well thankfully Mat s got his hands on all four and he s going to put them all to the test! So let s take a look at how the four compare. Starting with the Mercedes, it s recently had a mid-life facelift, so it comes with a few changes compared to the original 2018 release. There s a redesigned lower bumper, a bigger grille, and a new steering wheel on the inside. Apart from the clearly fake exhausts around the back, it looks pretty smart, and the infotainment & digital dial display is easily the best of the four cars here. When it comes to price, the range kicks off at 32, 000. Next up we have the Audi, which comes with a cheaper starting price than the Mercedes, at 27, 000. When it comes to the design it looks pretty smart from the outside, with a huge grille up front which is flanked by two sharp, well-designed headlights. There are creases around the side, and it looks relatively plain around the back. Step inside and although the infotainment system is quite good, there are lots of scratchy plastics to be found throughout the cabin. The BMW s next in line, and it has one thing no other cars here have - real exhaust tips on show! All-in-all the 1 Series looks quite smart on the outside, although we re not a fan of the grille up front Thankfully though the interior quality makes up for this, with high-quality materials found throughout the cabin along with a high-quality infotainment system on the dash. However, the same can t be said for the digital dials, which seem a bit basic and dark. When it comes to price, the 1 Series kicks off at around 28, 000. Then finally we have the cheapest car here, with the Golf range starting at around 26, 500. On the outside, it s unmistakably a Golf, and although we really like the design around the rear and side, we think the front end could be the worst-looking of the four cars here! Thankfully the interior looks really smart and clean, but these looks come at a price, with nearly all functionality coming through the infotainment screen What s so wrong with physical buttons!

i've sat in both the bmw and mercedes and driven them both in their diesel versions and yes the mercedes has a more youthful and a more beautiful interior especially at night but the quality of the interior and the way that bmw drives is unmatched. mercedes interior rattles too much for that kind of money and the automatic transmission in the bmw is on another level compared to the mercedes. so for me the bmw wins all day everyday. i've yet to drive an audi a3 but i doubt it will be fun to drive with the shi y dsg. and to my opinion the golf doesn't deserve to be in here, the new ford focus is a better car for me

I like the displays and infotainment on the Mercedes, but I don't think I could get over the quality of the interior workmanship. I've sat in more expensive Mercedes models (GLB, EQC, C-Class) and there are quality issues here too. Doors sag inwards, lots of dashboard parts crunch, creak and move, I just wouldn't expect this from this brand. It wasn't until the S-Class that I was happy with the build quality. With BMW, on the other hand, I haven't encountered this sort of thing even in the base models (2 series, X1.
Maybe someone here will refute me, but this is my personal experience.

They looks PREMIUM? Seriously? FOR WHO? Maybe for mental retarded which knows about automotive domain that have 4 wheels and a steering wheels. ANYONE else will open bonnet and will see A LOT OF LOT OF PLASTIC THERE. Which is FAR from define a PREMIUM CAR as you said. Also all of them are VERY CHEAP and handicapated platforms, i mean transverse engine and FWD or FWD strong Biased awd. That does NOT mean PREMIUM at all! Bacause PREMIUM is not about some useless gadges at interor, or exterior design and some leather seats. Premium STARTS with what i said above. ALWAYS!

Sorry, but what's this absolute obsession with 'fake exhausts' all about? If it looks good, which many manufacturers obviously think it does, what's the problem? What does it matter if it looks like exhausts but isn't? I like your videos very much, but I personally don't know anyone except you who gives a f whether they're fake or not. I have an Audi A6 C6 with genuine twin exhausts sticking out and an A6 C8 Avant with 'fake' ones, both of which look fine. Keep up the excellent reviews, but could you give the 'fake exhaust' thing a rest?

Matt loves the A class with it's cheap suspension bad economy, gake exhausts and cheap material well it's not potch if it has cheap materials. This is between the 1. GOLF 2. BMW 3. AUDI Mercedes is bad many people are noticing that the A class does not drive like an actual mercedes the only thing it has it's looks only, my friend switched his 2020 A class to 2021 Bmw 1 series and another said she's moved to Audi A3 because A class is a scam

Everyone disagrees with mat watson's opinion on cars design in interior and exterior in different ways
I would rather have that bmw i7 display than the new one that looks like a tablet, also it has the best side look from all the cars
The golf front looks so simple angry and elegant at the same time
The interior of the Audi just works nice for me and my taste, it's 2nd best looking in my opinion after the bmw

Im stunned The Merkin has the Smallest Engine. a live or beam rear end & Matt chooses it! Unbelievable. the cheapest car to manufacture but the highest price! Also GOLFS are NOT Luxury cars ok. for Godsake. who buys a car from a Criminal organisation? VW AG. idiots abound They are STILL prosecuting Executives from that pack of VW AUDI SKODA crap and people still support them. Unbelievable

> Luxury small car
> VW Golf
Pick one.
The interior quality of that Golf is a complete joke, a downgrade compared to the MK7. 5 and not even close to the other 3. It has no business in this comparison, and I don't understand why Mat is pretending that it does. It's a mainstream hatchback.
The asking price is a complete insult to every customer out there.

reply

Matt you are so biased, you always pick Mercs. They are full and boring. You haven t mentioned unreliable they are. Sorry mate you have lost all credibility and it wasn t a fair test. Now what motor did pick in the SUV test that had an Audi, X3, Volvo and a Merc. Surprise it was the Merc. You don t drive them in drag races though!
reply

So the BMW is the cheapest, has the best quality interior, joint second best boot space and only beaten by 1 litre, is the best to drive, second most fuel efficient but somehow the merc is the best all rounder? Not sure how you came to that conclusion based on your own comments
reply

Why not include a mazda 3 though? It is posh looking, interior cabin is definitely premium and competitive with these, and the motor is even more potent than some of them.
Shoulda name than video german hatchback comparison rather. :/

Hi Matt, the Mercedes has a serious issue when it starts to move from any standing start especially hill starts.
The slight delay or more of a lurch can be dangerous in traffic.
Can you please bring this out in your review.

reply

VW lost the plot with the exterior/interior design of this generation Golf; the previous model is orders of magnitude better in both. Wish they would've just tweaked that model instead of completely changing it so drastically.
reply

I have an a class and this new version is a downgrade i use the touchpad all the time its very handy. Mercedes just saving costs.
And bmw will soon be releasing the lci 1 series with the curved screen which looks nice.

reply

The winner is the one with the worst build quality, cheapest suspension fitted, wobbliest interior and it performed worst on fuel economy, whilst also having the smallest engine? Really?
Great review. Poor conclusion.

Please stop punting Germn cars only! Somebody should tell the chaps CW that there are more than 4 brands out there, its time to add variety and throw in Italian & French with those Greman humdrum automobiles.
reply

Should have been:
- Most sporty: prev gen 1 serie
- Best value: prev gen Golf
- Best overall: prev gen A3
Sadly all have made their new ones worst, and now the cheaply made Merc win the test. Smh

reply

The golf is honestly ugly as hell
The BMW looks too much like an SUV
And the class A is uglier than the golf from the back.
The only one that is good looking is the Audi for me

reply

Funny how Carwow picked the sporty versions of all the cars apart from the golf. amg line, S line, m sport vs life and not the r line which is by far the best looking golf.
reply

Last year we went shopping for a Golf, or Outback, but ended up with a used 3-series. I hope that the BMW wins. The black bmw looks OK, but they should really all be purple now.
