Sell your car for free with Carwow: Mat’s got his hands on the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT! We’ve got our hands on the AMG GT 63 edition, and he’s about to see if it can compete with class leaders like the Porsche 911 Turbo S and Aston Martin Vantage! So first off, let’s check out the design. Even though it’s an all-new GT, there’s no denying it’s unmistakably recognisable as an AMG GT. Around the back, you’ll find a cool new tail light design, and although there’s a diffuser and some vents, the stick of truth has found them all to be fake! Despite sharing the same underpinnings as the AMG SL, the only thing borrowed from this car’s design can be found along the side - the doors! Everything else is unique to the GT. Up front, you’ll find the instantly recognisable aggressive-style grille, coupled with a load of vents which are actually real! Step inside and the GT is a lovely car to be in. There’s Alcantara on the steering wheel and you'll find weighty metal paddle shifters on either side, and there’s a huge infotainment screen on the centre of the dash. The turbine-style vents look cool, but unfortunately, there’s quite a bit of cheap materials to be found in the cabin. What’s more, the cover for the sun visor has to be operated manually! Not what you would expect to find in a car that costs from 165, 000. When it comes to engines, all versions of the AMG GT are powered by a 4-litre twin-turbo V8. The entry-level is the AMG 55 model, which puts down 476hp and 700Nm. The car we have here, the 63, produces 585hp and 800Nm, while the range-topper is the GT 63 S E-Performance. It’s a hybrid, so it comes with a V8 and an electric motor, which combine to produce 816hp and an eye-watering 1, 420Nm! So what do you think - could the new GT be a 911 beater You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself! I think Merc are saying trust us to shift faster than you can. As a former racer I'm pretty good at quick shifts, but in this car (I have one) I find that it is much faster to put it in a Sport mode and let it do the shifting (as a PDK would do. When I tried Manual shift mode I found that if I was just a split second late (too close to redline, it would hit the limiter which cost me far more time than having the car do the shifting (which it does very, very well. So as much fun as it is to go full Manual, better times come from Sport/Auto. And it does a great job as you are decelerating too, blipping the throttle and downshifting with some lovely snap, crackle and pop. All of that said, the paddles are still, always working. So you can still select a downshift or two whenever you want, then let it do the upshifts. Like all luxury car reviews, they are forced to be very, very picky (love Mat, just the way it is. But anyone who actually buys one of these will be a happy lad.

Another one. Ahh. An actual Twin Turbo V8. Not a Octuple Turbo 4cylinder Impressive. I care about boot space when selecting a car like this. That was sarcasm, but I somewhat do care. The ride should go from smooth pillow to tear ones spine out. I'm guessing the 63S isn't that great, with the weight qnd complexity, unless the 'Baffins' [Charming word] at Mercedes-Benz figured their crap out -I'd prefer a Roma over both the PORSCHAAAAAAAAAAA and the Mercedes-Benz

It looks great from the rear, amazing actually. But thats about it. This car is overpriced as all heII. And i genuinly cant figure out how they made it this heavy. They must have either actually tried to make it heavy to prove that their hybrids really arent that heavy compared to their standard ICE vehicles, or not given a flying crap.

I like this car. Not a huge fan of the interior aesthetically however. Too many garish colours and too much going on within the infotainment screen. I have no idea why a car this powerful and expensive, has a fake diffuser and vents. Just make them functional. Bloody fast though!

I went to the dealer to see this car in person and was highly disappointed with the interior finishes and build quality. I don’t think it aligns with the price Mercedes is asking. I may be a BMW fanboy here, but I enjoyed my M8 competition over the AMG

I love Mercedes and I’ve recently fell in love with Porsche. With that said, I’ve always looked at Porsche a slight step above Mercedes, but Mercedes have better interiors. This car is nice, but doesn’t matchup to a 911.

Mercedes did a fabulous job and remained true to spirit. The car while heavier than ever, resembles Porsche design with a cabin more like Ferrari, and a power profile to rival Aston Martin aficionados.
reply

It's a nice looking car but it's gone a bit bloated and should be a 2 seater not a 22 I would buy the Porsche every time. I really wanted to like this but I think the older car had more presence.
reply

Anyone else think it looks like an Aston Martin. It's usually Aston Martin that copies all of mercedes-benz's technology but I never seen Mercedes-Benz copy any of Aston Martin's styling designs
reply

Just took a look at prices and it seems that price wise this matches closer to the Turbo/Turbo S but in terms of performance I'd wager a GTS should have no problem giving it a run for its money.

After watching and seeing a period of time the new GT and than you put short cuts of the Old GT. My gosh, the old one look so much better and brutal to be honest. Old GT still the best one.
reply

I love this car but how can you justify fake exhaust, fake air takes etc for 160k Thats just wrong. And especially the exhaust part, my 2000 slk has real exhaust and was 40k new
reply

the old AMG GT looked exotic, the new one while it looks nice, looks too much like a c class coupe with the AMG treatment to be compared to a 911, more like am M4 competitor
reply

Idk how this is a 911 killer when my 911 turbo s i bring it to 5 km road desert with no issues enough ground clearance enough power so i dont see this beating a 911 anytime
reply

It's nit picking but not having lights on the vanity mirror in a car that expensive is pretty inexcusable tbf. I drive a Peugeot 208 and even I've got lights on both mirrors.
reply

Serious question. what is this car made of how can such a small 2 door car weight 2130 KG. Right now this is one of the biggest mystery that I need to uncode.
reply

A beautiful SL COUPE. i prefer the overall look of the PREVIOUS GEN which had a more pronounced front mid engined layout.
BETTER THAN A 911. NOPE

reply

At the price nothing should feel sub standard, way too expensive and will depreciate like a brick after a year. Turbo S everyday for me and a Roma second.
reply

All they need to do for this car to be perfect is replace that bloody awful steering wheel with the capacitive touch buttons!
reply

What beautiful car. It has real class. Gorgeous and that 4. 0 V8 bi turbo is heaven. I would choose this car over any other one.
