New Smart #1 review: Bigger IS better!

When you think of Smart cars, chances are you remember tiny cars like the ForTwo or ForFour. However, the #1 is clearly much bigger than these, and now sits as a competitor to the likes of the Megane E-Tech and Kia Niro EV! So let s see how this all-new Smart stacks up. Starting with the design, it looks pretty impressive on the outside. There are full-length light bars at both the front and rear, and the back of the car is giving us serious Mercedes EQB vibes! Along the side, you ll see a set of smart-looking 19-inch alloy wheels, as well as flush door handles to help with aerodynamics. It also comes with a two-tone paint job, which is a nice touch. Step inside and the good looks continue! The #1 comes with a minimalist design, with nearly all controls running through the central infotainment screen. That s a bit annoying when you come to control things while driving, but thankfully it comes with voice controls and the screen is pretty easy to use. The cabin is largely covered in soft-touch materials, and the build quality is pretty good. Unfortunately, though the digital driver's display is a bit small, if you pick the Premium trim, you ll be treated to a heads-up display as well. There are two trims to choose from - the entry-level Pro+ or the Premium. Both come with a single electric motor that can produce 272hp. Both cars come with a 62kWh battery pack, but while the Pro+ can run for a range of up to 260 miles, the Premium can run up to 273 miles. The starting price of the Smart #1 is around 36, 000. So is it worth it? You ll need to stick with Mat to see for yourself!

Matt I have to disagree with you on one point. The gear selector belongs where it always has been on the floor. I cannot stand a column mounted gear stick. Especially in Australia as that is where the indicator stalk is normally placed on the right hand side. Which means that I always end up moving into neutral by accident when trying to indicate. Shame really

BIG improvement from your normal little smart car, it now resembles more of a mini, and I think would be more beneficial to those who want a smart car but can't fit in one. Great car, love the design, would love to see a Smart Car SUV!

At this stage, I feel like I watch Carwow purely for Mat, and not for the car (I have no interest in this car, lol.
Edit: Also, is it just me or does the fox's face make him look constipated?

kind of a low poly fox for 2023 isn't it? Although it isn't my kind of design, i can appreciate the design direction going a different way than all the other car manufacturers.

Fun fact: Smart was originally intended to be Mercedes main competitor to MINI. But, in US and Canada they failed miserably and were out of business within 15 years.

Smart is known for being a small quirky city car. Wait and the next generation will be an SUV! I think this way it's ruined. Imagine having S class as a supermini!

This is definitely one of the good EVs. Even after considering it being half Chinese. Quality and design looks a little bit better than the competition.
reply

I like it, kinda. Chinese are very innovative. America used to be. Well, there's TSLA, so.
American cars suck, but I love my country.

reply

Wow. We are now saving the planet by buying more Chinese. We can claim to be net zero by letting China spew out all the pollution, instead of us.

Affordable drag race! 2008 TTS Vs Golf R Vs S3 Vs Scirrocco R. All have the same engine so would love to see which perform better! Thanks

at first I was confused at the title of the video. Then I realized Smart #1 is the name of the car. Odd name for a car imo
