A fair verdict Matt. I have a Tesla Model Y (Long Range) and have learned that 1) in the right circumstances (ability to charge at home, tax incentives as a company car etc) electric cars are a fantastic, no brainer daily driver and I won't be going back and 2) they just aren't performance cars. As quick as my Model Y is, I'm glad I didn't bother getting the performance version because the acceleration is silent, easy and not thrilling once you get used to it. As a drivers car my old Fiesta ST and even Golf R were in a different league. Electric cars are heavy, one-dimensional, lack feel and demand very little from the driver. I will have an electric car as my daily from now on, but I dream of the day when I can afford to have a second car just for fun. Whatever it is it will be light, manual and petrol powered!

In the real world, this car has devastating performance.
Yes I have one (in matte green) and am very pleased with it.
I know we are all bloody doomed (climate change) but I bought this because I am trying to do my bit as I have contributed massively to global warming over the years.
M3, M5 Touring, E63 AMG RS4 x2 to name just a few.
As I said, sadly I think we are past the point of no return but it makes me feel better and that's what it's all about.

Power and performance is great to have but it isn t the be all and end all of everything.
My personal opinion is that although a great price for the performance you get I m afraid this car is ugly.
The shape is hideous especially the back of the car.
The interior of the car has no flare and again hideous.
It s like a mini 2 ton tank and it s a no from me I m afraid.
Although my Mercedes A 35 is much slower to 60 I would still rate this car better despite the price tag.

While the performance is certainly looking great, lets not forget you wont be doing that all the time or for a long time in one go. So I would wonder what the everyday driving will be like over say a month to see if the additional weight, power and shorter range is a negative to buyers.
I did see a video of a Tesla on the autobahn doing 320 kph, sure was quick, but doubt it could stay at the speed for long as the battery would either drain to fast or overheat.

I m not a fan of the MG s styling and the fact that they can t even be bothered to do proper English translations on the infotainment make me wonder what other corners they ve cut. Heard lots of stories of Chinese EV batteries not having proper safety mechanisms in place and catching fire. It s also ugly. I ll stick to the buy cheap buy twice mantra I think.

Nah sorry, being quick in a straight line isnt enough. Good for an ev is just not enough.
Manufacturers just say yeah we know its sterile so we will just give it lots of power (and weight)
As soon as you get used to the acceleration which doesn't take long, there's nothing EVs have to offer in terms of fun

Destroys what? Straight speed in a mile? Driving is much more than that, much more. EV fans will never understand this. Obviously EVs are the future and in the coming years they will be the majority of vehicles on the roads, but they are not the only possibility and never will be, the world is not just Europe

Let's see what the established brands come up with for their electric hot hatches. VW, Audi and Merc will find it hard to replicate the feeling and handling of their ICE hot hatches. I'm sure that they will have shortcomings and they will be much more expensive than the MG4 Xpower.

performance is really impressive, i just don't like the interior, especially compared to the other MGs it's quite conservative and very basic. also if you check other chinese brands like BYD, check the atto 3 interior, ik it's not a hot hatch but the interior is better in every way.

So for the majority of people, as you say at the end, they should go ahead and buy it. So why does the Avoid stay in place for almost the entire verdict, with the Buy symbol appearing for less than a second. That's not the message you are actually conveying.

Wow, a cover for the brake caliper. thats some top notch automotive fakery, unbelievable. That alone would be a reason for me not to buy, apart from the hideous plastic-look and fake brand. If you know anything about cars you don t buy this car, like Matt said.

Nice electrical appliance. I think Mr Watson worked in Currys - on the white goods section. The ev is a boring electrical appliance destined for landfill. Like a fridge or washing machine. When will the motoring journalists get this through their dense circuits?

Son has the base model MG4, not xpower, and the first time he took it beyond locally, it let him down by refusing to charge, leading to massive inconvenience. It's apparently not an uncommon issue. I'll wait until they get their shit in order personally.

The only car MG has 'ever' bought out at this performance level and only because it's electric which. will be obsolete like the rest of them in 10 years. Also the combined horsepower is a flawed math - it is the highest horsepower and not a combination.

Electric cars will fail big time. Most buyers are going back to petrol / diesel cars. Our country is not set up for Electric. Anyway our Government don't want you to own a car in the future. Agenda 21 / 2030. Research the WEF / UN websites.

If anything, electric vehicles have given opportunity for companies who have not been competitive in the ICE market for a long time, to make a comeback.
I thought MG were done a long while ago, but it s good to see an old brand returning.

I'm just imagining how much better a VW ID3 would be if it had the option to have a rear motor with 350 hp. That would make it a very interesting car especially if it wouldn't increase the starting price a whole lot.

I agree with Mat, avoid this car if you want a fun car. I've had cars that are only fast in a straight line, you get bored of it after a while. This will be even worse with no engine sound.

NOPE. can be faster than an audi or ford or merc BUT battery is worthless for range and the cost yo replace the batteries every 5 to 6 years is a joke.

It's the bargain of the decade. Hopefully it'll spur on other manufacturers to produce more affordable EV performance models!
