Dodge Viper v Porsche 911 Turbo: DRAG RACE

We ve got our hands on the Porsche 911 Turbo 930, and it s going up against a Dodge Viper from 1992! So let s see how the two compare. Starting with the Porsche, it s powered by a 3. 3-litre flat-six air-cooled engine that can produce 300hp and 430Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear-wheels only, and it tips the scales at 1, 310kg. Then alongside it we have the Viper. It s powered by an 8-litre V10 that can produce 400hp and 630Nm, with this power sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox. It may have more power than the Viper, but it s also heavier, weighing in at 1, 490kg. So will the newer, more powerful Viper snatch it? Or will the extra weight prove decisive? There s only one way to find out LET S RACE!

What I've learned from this video:
- More horse power do not guarantee you a win in a drag or a roll race;
- Modern drivers HAVE NO IDEA how to use breaks properly.
Seriously, the break test was hard to watch. Both cars don't have ABS, which means you can't just slam the break pedal and expect the car to stop quickly. You need to regulate the force of breaking, so you would be at the very limit of blocking the wheels, but not passing it. Both of them had horrible breaking skills, Luna was lucky that Viper has its engine at the front, I suspect it pushed front wheels harder into the ground, which helped stop the car faster. Porsche with the engine at the back, got something like 50/50 weight distribution, or something close to it, when Met hit the breaks, meaning that rear tires get unloaded and the front doesn't have enough weight to push the front tires into the ground. Both cars, in theory, should have similar break distance as modern cars, if they have good modern tires on them and drivers who know what they're doing.
This is my thoughts based on my theoretical knowledge and some minor race practice. If I'm wrong, you're welcome to correct me.
It would be good if they made the test properly. I wanted to see whether rear engine placement adds any significant break distance.

This drag reminds me of the movie. There's Something About Mary
Luna drove like a Mary throughout, with lazy, slow launches, but Matt out Mary'd her,
snatching defeat from the jaws of victory with his poor performance.
This was anti-climactic, and pretty sad, all around. I wish this video had some drivers in it.

ffs who gave you the driving license? how can you call that emergency braking just loking the brakes? even in my first year i already knew that if i have a malfunctioning ABS system i shouldn't just floor the brake pedal. poor tires and poor cars

Considering the Viper can hit 60mph in first gear, i'd say that 2nd and 3rd gear on the Viper is waaaay too high a gear for the roll races and probably should get someone who knows gearing and how to change gear to participate instead.

Had an '85 turbo 930 that had some work done on the motor, thing nearly tried to kill me twice. Even broke my local dyno by trying to wheelspin when it came on boost. Hairy arsed car for sure. Regret selling it.

Not really a fair drag race in terms of engine size, power, transmission or the year of build. alot happened from '86 to '
1992. But still, I love the Porsche could give the viper a good run

This guy is such a shmuck. Always launching early, then talking shit when he wins because he himself in the faster car. Gloating like he owns the car. Having so overs until he wins. I gets annoying
reply

Why not also give us the best time you got from each car? The Porsche's first run may have been faster than the Viper's third run. Especially as these are fragile classics and tricky to race.
reply

Air cooled 911 transmissions are not designed for dragracing. The shifter feel at best is a bit vague and rubbery. Missing a shift is almost expected unless it s a car you re very familiar with.

That was a bit of a change from the normal Carwow drag races, Mat, not quite so simple when you actually have to drive the car rather than just sit there and plant you right foot is it?
reply

As always Mat Wat a Great Race. as Long as Your Still In American can Get you hands on some of hennessy s products and drag race them. Most anticipated is the 1000hp Exorcist

Italy and Germany both won 4 Football World Cups. Brazil won 5, but in the way things are going, they will be surpassed soon.
Brazillian guy saying this btw.

I haven't watched it yet. But I bet you you win. Because it's a girl driving against you man are better im sorry look around the world
reply

What tyres did they have? Might be good idea to also say what Tyers each car has so we know the difference could be just tyres not the car
reply

as this 911 Turbo has neither anymore the original dampers, chassis settings nor wheels, the terrible breaking exercise was to be expected
reply

I love cars and likes watching just only Manchester United matches which to be honest recently they've been really disappointing
