How to Properly Recharge Your AC System

Recharge your AC system properly. I go though all of the steps on how to safely charge your air conditioning system with refrigerant. First you need to evacuate the system, then pull a vacuum, and then add the correct amount of refrigerant based on weight. Vacuum Pump + Manifold gauge combo

A few safety tips for anyone doing this:
1. Unless you are pulling vacuum, you must NEVER open both valves on the manifold.
2. Tighhten the refrigerant hoses very well(with hand) because a hose falling off during charging can cause a serious risk.
3. Wear thick gloves as refrigerant cools extremely rapidly and cause frost bit on skin wherever it touches.
4. Before you remove the hoses, you should depressurize them from the bleeding point shownin the video. If you dont do that, when removing the valve a sudden splash of refrigerant can cause frost bite on fingers.
5. If you donot have a scale or thermometer, refer to standard pressure charts for high and low side to ensure you donot overfill, keep an eye on high side pressure, while filling that can go up before you see low side pressure rising.
6. Go slow, real slow there is no hurry.
7. Keep your ac at maximum refriegeration load, this means making your ac work harder, open all windows, turn ac to max to work out the ac, if the compressor turns off while charging gas, a backflow is possible which is not ideal.

so, i added refrigerant to my car. since the car is old enough to not have ac fromt he factory and it has custom fitted ac, idk how much refrigerant it takes. so I filled it up until the sight glass on receiver drier is clear. and my vent temperature is arond -2. 2c or 28f. is it okay? from your video it shows around 42f or 5. 5c
my compressor is sanden SD507 or SD5H11 retrofitted from R12 to R134a

Pressure loss on the high side.
When I do the vacuum test, the low side stays on -30 PSI for an hour BUT the high side seems to lose vacuum. After a few minutes, the high side goes from about -10 PSI to 0. Is this a concern, the video doesnt seem to look at the high side which I dont understand why? The 2 sides dont seem to be connected when the car compressor isnt running, the car turned off

This really is half done. You should not follow this. it's great you are giving people confidence to DIY. But only showing people how to recharge is pointless. Rl897 is hydroscopic, it needs to be changed every 12 months. And change your reciever dryer. If your system has failed or been open longer than 10 minutes. Your asking for a break down

I appreciate your videos. I tried this for my first time and realize that you only get one chance to do it right. If you mess it up, you have to take it to a shop to get evacuated before you can try again. This must be done very, very meticulously and it is very easy for something to go wrong and spoil the vaccuum and contaminate the process.

Hey Chris fix I love how you explain everything step-by-step Ive been watching videos for a while I dont have a lot experience fixing cars I have done things to my car and I have save a lot of money but I have a question can I do this to an older model auto F150 Ford 88 with the compressor etc.

Question: The second can of refrigerant still had refrigerant left over. Do you leave the attachment that pierced the can on until later use? or do you take it off and if so, how do you prevent the refrigerant from leaking out of the can?

I'm having trouble charging the ac on my 2000 Lincoln. I pulled a vaccum for a hour as you described and when done no R134a would go in the system. I even jumped the low pressure swtich and still no go. Could you please advise?

Great video. Careful, though, turning can upside down. Rarely a problem, but can stress a tired system. Also, don't charge system on a very cold day with very cold cans. Usually, a 75 to 85 degree day and bottle is ideal.

Thanks Chris for the information it helped a lot. I know this video is for vehicles but I am in college learning to become an HVAC Technician, After watching your video it makes a lot more sense.
