As someone who lives in the burbs outside Philly, when he said Virginian highways had an anaemic speed limit of 55. That's literally ALL the highways surrounding Philly. 95, 676, 76, and 476 are all 55 (or 50mph inside the few miles of center city some of those pass through) Thankfully Most cops don't pull you over for going 79 and under, but, on 476 North and Southbound between exit 1 and 20 there are at least four built-in cross roads for police (actually, the roads are for all emergency services, but it's 99% of the time used by police for speed traps) that run speed traps all day. There are also three additional spots officers can hide on 476 between 1 and 20 that are not directly on the roadway and are also less visible than all of the other partly obscured intentional throughfares. Oh, Haha, by the way If your officer doesn't show up to your court date to fight the ticket, the ticket isn't dropped. They have two additional dates that they can schedule you for before it is dropped. That means you can show up three times without them being required to show before you even get to negotiate on or drop a ticket, and a lot of the local townships here don't have an unbiased judge, so the Police Sergent or acting head of PD in that town serves as a judge instead. Translation: you will pay for every ticket and fighting it will only get you additional points and dings on your license. #DirtyDelco #ThanksPhilly

As a not so proud Virginian I can confirm that everything in this video is true, I used to drive an old 2003 Subaru Legacy beater and we nicknamed it the ticket magnet because cops would pull me over for the slightest thing. I once got pulled over because my car was too loud and they claimed I had an aftermarket exhaust (which is illegal for some reason) and I had to explain to them that it was just the sound Boxer engines make but the cop didnt believe me and gave me the ticket anyway. Which then lead to me getting my license suspended, and being an 18 year old kid making 10/hr I wasnt going to be able to pay the 150 fine (which had interest added the longer I took to pay it) when all of my money was going towards keeping my car running and helping my family with bills. Then after a while I got pulled over again for illegal tint and they ran my license and it was still suspended, (which I could have gone to jail for) but the cop was nice enough to say I cant tell you to break the law but you can pull over into this parking lot and get a ride to which he gave me the ticket, pulled away and I just made my way home lol. In conclusion, Virginia sucks.

I ended up getting my license suspended for a year due to 7 speeding tickets in 6 months. I got the paper in the mail explaining that my license was suspended but crumpled it up before I finished reading it because I was irritated. A year later I tried to get my license reinstated and quickly found out why I should have read the entire paper they sent a year prior. What I didn't read was the part where it said that I had to acknowledge that my license was suspended and although it was in fact suspended, the actual time didn't start until I acknowledged it. I ended up having to drive for TWO years on a suspended license instead of just one year all because I threw a fit and crumpled the paper.

Grey Forest Texas is on a highway with a 55 mph limit that drops to 35 mph after a blind corner with no warning. The cop parks right after the sign and issues tickets all damn day, I got one for doing 45 because I didn't immediately slam on my breaks. Cop was as smug as could be, issued a ticket for the speeding and registration being out of date when it wasn't (my inspection was but it was the first of the month after it expired, and this was before they combined the two into one sticker so the ticket was for the wrong thing) got both dismissed but still had to pay 100 in court cost. It's a damn racket.

Virginia resident here. Two things I want to add. 1. Police radar detectors are illegal to have in your car in VA and DC. For the rest of America is legal while there are a few exceptions for some states. 2. The speed limit enforced by aircraft is no longer a thing anymore. The signs remain because it would would cost too much money to take them down. If you ever find yourself driving through VA especially I95, USE WAZE. It has saved me many tickets from speed trapping cops. VA has made me really paranoid about speeding.

Little bit disappointed by this video. Whether or not a state is unfair for car owners is about more than just the existence of speed traps. Onerous roadworthiness requirements and regular, expensive inspection requirements also make a state/jurisdiction hostile to car owners, more so than strict speed limit enforcement IMO. Was hoping the video would cover these issues too (e. g. in New Jersey they removed RWC inspections a few years ago, while in Ontario, which I know, is not in the US, they recently introduced them)

The other half to reckless driving in VA: anything 80 or more. There are portions of Interstate 95 & 64 where the speed limit is 70 (exception to the 55 speed limit bc it's rural. Therefore you only have a 9 mph window before its reckless and not a normal 20. Also, I've even heard of a speed trap on I-81 in Smith County, VA. Speed limit is 75 and they bust for reckless all the time y'all be careful out there.

I would add that the most likely reason that Virginia is safe, as far as fatalities go, is because there are millions of people driving around the D. C. area every day that rarely travel over 45 mph. So, when you have 10-15 million miles travelled (based on 6. 2m people in the metro area) each day where just about no one is travelling at 60 mph for a quarter of the day, the roads tend to stay pretty safe.

I dont drive in VA or DC. DC has gotten caught several times now for abusing speed cameras but placing one down in the middle of a section of road that is 35 mph and setting the camera to 15 and there is no signage or anything to indicate the camera is there or the change in speed which is a Huge no no. So my family and I avoid driving into DC at all costs even though we live on the outskirts
