How to Fix a Leaking Gasket in Your Car A Team: I personally know a guy who used that stuff to seal a leaking valve cover gasket, and it worked great, he also worked at Advanced auto parts, but 3 days went by and his car stopped running, he was so proud to tell me about how he fixed his own leaking gasket and he showed me how he did it, he takes off the oil cap and points to the big opening, and it was filled with now dry silicone. yup. it stopped the leaks, all of them, I then had to tell him after I caught my breath from freaking out in laughter. I said, OMG good job, even I could not have done that so good. I told him to take off the valve cover next time and put on a new gasket, he then asked, huh, where does the gasket go? I point to the little bolts going around the edges of it, and I had to tell him to take it off, if it will come off now, as it has been fully glued to the motor and valve springs. he did that and put on a new gasket only to learn he also sealed up the oil return drain holes. the car just didnt run right after that. gotta love the new guys who get hired at the parts store, they try so hard,

Real mechanics never use this stuff, unless like Scotty said, you cant find a replacement gasket. But using this sealer for the Thermostat Housing gasket was just a bad example, as its super easy to just make one of those gaskets. But I KNOW why he chose to do that particular part, as it was the easiest to show and video for said purpose. And for decades now the the new car manufacturers have use a very similar sealer (if not the same stuff) on just about every gasket on a motor that they can get away with, as its much cheaper for them in-which to do so instead of using a REAL gasket.

Scotty, Random question but can you rebuild manual gearboxes? Im just curious about how to learn how to do so and how long it takes to learn. I have my old gearbox from my Peugeot 206 sitting on my kitchen floor (bearing went bad) and would love to learn how to rebuild it but there isnt any detailed guides. Im guessing its extremely complex but would love to learn. Im guessing the only way is having an expert teach you, or perhaps it could be learned by using the little information online and taking it apart and learning as you go?

I would have stuffed a rag in the coolant passage and cleaned the area with some fine scotch brite. I like to use the proper gasket if I can or make one out of gasket paper but this method is ok if you cant get the parts right away. Permatex black can be used around high temperatures. Motoseal is good around oil and fuel. If you are really stuck you can make a gasket out of a corn flakes box or cigarette pack as a temporary measure.

A mechanic said add pepper to the antifreeze to fix seal radiator leaks. Indian Head Gasket is good. It has to sit overnight, but it will seal anything. Mens 1980s haircuts were goofy. Mine and national news anchor man included. Nowadays everyone just goes with a buzz cut.

Hey Scotty, Can you do a video on the rum runner cars of the prohibition era? I was told once that when they ran out of gas they could use the moonshine they carried in a pinch, is that true for old old cars, if so can you do that with modern cars today?
