I arrived at Horsted Keynes to hear the glorious sound of a steam locomotive climbing the bank towards East Grinstead. -Have I got the date wrong- was my first thought, although it turned out that the steam engine was substituting for a failed diesel locomotive. After so many years of a strictly steam only policy, it is still novel to see diesels on the Bluebell line. Due to the failure of class 46 46045 (D182, the lines only resident diesel D4106 was promoted from giving brake-van rides around Horsted Keynes station to hauling full size passenger trains on the main line. Steam in the form of ex Southern Railway Maunsell S15-class 4-6-0 No. 847 was also covering for the non-availability of diesel traction. This diesel Gala turned into an enjoyable mixed traction event, something the Bluebell Railway might hopefully consider for next year, bearing in mind they have no resident mainline diesels to call upon when visiting locos fail. Visiting locos supplied by the Midland Railway - Butterley were: Class 31 No. 31271 (D5801) Stratford 1840 - 2001 - Class 46 No. 46045 (D182) failed and stored out of sight at Sheffield Park - Class 45 No. 45041 (D53) Royal Tank Regiment Locos from the home fleet: ex British Railways 350hp diesel-electric shunter D4106/09018 and ex Southern Railway Maunsell S15-class 4-6-0 No. 847

Ah, Tim, it's been a while between drinks(so-to-speak. Always great to see a new upload from you, and this time you have a collaborator, Abi! Hello, Abi! Great stuff here in this video. Always good to see a steam loco in action, even if it's a stand-in for a diesel loco in an ostensibly-intended diesel gala. I'm fascinated by the platform arrangement there at Horsted Keynes, a single track between two platforms, then two tracks between the next two platforms, and a final two tracks between another two platforms. Cheers!

Funny by the way snapshots you are known for, Tim, like a dog who can read billboard for dog cake (4: 48, and a teddy bear (with protective vest) monitors everything (11: 05. - Heinz
