The Cook Strait Ferry is one of the most spectacular ferry crossings in the world, taking around 3. 5 hours to sail between New Zealand-s North and South Islands crossing the dangerous and unpredictable waters of the Cook Strait. We set out from Picton at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound aboard an early morning ferry on a glorious sunny day, the boat shudders a little as it turns to head out into the Marlborough Sounds situated at the Northern end of South Island, the sounds are an extensive network of flooded valleys created by a combination of land subsidence and rising sea levels. The steep wooded hills leading down to the water-s edge and numerous isolated bays of this sparsely populated land are only disturb a few times a day by the passing ferries, access to the small communities and isolated houses is difficult, many only being accessible by boat. Captain Cook visited the sounds in the 1770s, discovering a plant (Cook's scurvy grass) high in vitamin C which helped to cure scurvy amongst his crew. We pass marine farms cultivating salmon and mussels, the increasing strength of the wind indicates we are about to leave the sheltered waters of the sounds as we bid farewell to South Island and head out into the often perilous seas of the Cook Strait. On this occasion the strait was calm, as passengers enjoyed the warm sunshine and awesome views as South Island disappeared into the distance, just 23 kilometres of open sea separate the two Islands. We sail parallel to the far more densely populated coastline of North Island, before passing between Pencarrow Head and Palmer Head on the tip of Miramar Peninsula to enter the sheltered bay that is Wellington Harbor. Our ferry slows as people make their way back to their vehicles ready for their onward journeys. The calm and peace of South Island is quickly replaced by the hustle and bustle of Wellington-s city traffic. Map at

Brilliant upload. been across the Cook Strait on numerous occasions on both the Interislander and Blueridge Ferries (preferred the latter) and every scene you shot around the Picton Port, every bay, every cove, all those dwellings throughout the sounds bring back great memories of some enjoyable journeys through there. Gotta admit, as quick and impressive as flying across the Cook Strait is, nothing beats that 3 or so hour journey (depending on conditions) of that ferry trip. On a nice sunny day, grab a beer, sit outside and take those views in, and if you're lucky, spot some dolphins.

I went there in 2017. The ferrys (Interislander and Blue (something or other) have a large portion of the trip from Wellington in NO WAKE water, the entire Marlboro sound and the Wellington port are super slow. Picton is a splendid small town with great scenery. My trip was abbreviated by two tropical typhoons and 2 5. 3 earthquakes. Yahoo!

Tim, amazing sea crossing. Beautiful scenery. I noticed the large number of travel campers on the ferry. This looks like the way to travel beautiful New Zealand. Take care and please keep the videos coming. Ted

New Zealand is one of the most gorgeous countries on earth, and even with its modest size, it packs a lot of history, culture, and attractions for us to experience. - -
