Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand although it is considerably smaller than Auckland, what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in beauty, situated on a large natural harbour, it is located on North Islands South Western tip, sandwiched between Cook Strait and the Remutaka Range. It is the world-s southernmost capital city, it can also claim to be the world's windiest city by average wind speed. Catch a cable car up to the Botanic Gardens to enjoy wonderful vistas over the city, its port and airport, see the regular ferry-s criss-cross the harbour, or maybe watch larger vessels, such as cruise liners, freighters or one of the regular Interisland ferries heading gingerly out of the calm harbour into the unpredictable waters of Cook Strait. Look down on aircraft wobbling in the wind as they prepare to land at Wellingtons airport. The city does suffer from traffic congestion and limited, expensive parking, but that-s no problem as the suburbs are well served by frequent and comfortable trains offering the best views of the city, coastline and countryside, a day rover is good value too. City guides tell you all about the excellent coffee houses, vibrant art scene and wonderful waterfront, they don-t always tell you about the little ferries connecting with Somes Island and Eastbourne on the opposite side of the harbour or just how stunningly beautiful a Wellington sunset can look when observed from Mount Victoria. This is the first of a two part video taking you to some of the places you won-t read about in guides, we catch trains to Masterton, Waikanae and Johnsonville with views over the pretty suburbs, Wairarapa vineyards and the stunning Kapiti Coast. Visit Somes Island, drive along the Seafront from Eastbourne back to Wellington and Oriental Parade, experience the World Premiere of the Hobbit -An Unexpected Journey-. In Part 2 we will visit zoos, museums, exhibitions and quiet bays known only to locals. Filmed between 2005 & 2019

I love absolutely, positively love everything about windy Welly being my home for eight years since 2009. My favorite day off activities included train rides to other suburbs, walking round the bay and trekking up nearby mountains. I lived just at the base of Mt. Victoria at Newtown so it was an easy access for me. However, I made it a regular dose to climb Te Koupahu taking the Brooklyn route to the turbine, up the observatory then down to Island Bay. For my round the bay, I particularly enjoyed the long hour walk around Miramar peninsula because of the panoramic vistas at every turn.
I may have left New Zealand in 2016 but the fond memories are etched into my senses. Thus, watching your travelogue on Wellington seems to be de javu for me. Thumbs up for the virtual tour!

Very nice, indeed! Though Wellington, smaller than Auckland, is NZ's Capital, I'd hazzard a guess that Wellington would dwarf Australia's capital, Canberra, somehow. The entire Australian Capital Territory is barely more than Canberra and its suburbs, and honestly, the ACT should not have separate status at all. It should be regarded simply as a region of NSW, like the Hunter Valley, New England, Riverina, Illawarra, etc.

Ahh Tim my hometown. There is nothing like driving on the road rom Petone to Wellington on a cloudless windless day. Thanks mate for this reminder of my hometown now I live in Aus. Well it was nice to drive past my sisters house in Eastbourne near the shopping centre and on to Days Bay were we were as kids. Many happy days there. Take care Tim all the best from me

Hello Tim, when you posted the Wellington suburban line a long time ago, I spontaneously fell in love with Wellington. I was particularly fascinated by its urban lightness with the French touch, as can be seen on the streets. If I had to live on the North Island, Wellington would be my first choice. - Greetings, Heinz

Ah Wellington. There is no where quite like it is there. I've been lucky to have time and the money to catch the Capital Connection down there for a day, then catch it back to Levin quite a few times over the last 25 odd years. While also having plenty of wee holidays down there with family. It never gets old.

Wonderful film, Tim. I know every sq. metre having lived there 44 years as a cyclist. Very nice on a good day, I don't miss the wind though. Oh, and stormy winters. Much milder here in Levin, and more affordable houses, at least in 2014. And steam train comes past quite often. Keep up the good work.

Don't look like it's changed much In the last 30, 40, 50 years, She's still Wellington. You going to do a trip up the Valley. Then I can really feel homesick AF. Living in Brazil for the past 10 years 600km inland from the coast.
