SBB Stadler Flirt review: Disappointing

welcome to this trip report bound to the France with SBB CFF FFS and their brand new FLIRT train: . Miniatur credit: Petit Bogie ( I know these trains well and I couldn-t disagree more with the review, they-re amongst the best in their category for comfort (I-m 6-2- 189cm in height, the seats are firm but not at all uncomfortable, they offer a smooth ride and are perfectly fit for purpose, if only other countries had such trains for regional/short connections. I-ve travelled all over Europe and North America and no country in my view can match the quality of Swiss public transport in terms of ease of use, inter connectivity between different forms of transport and comfort. It might not look spectacular but everything works the way it should. I-m not saying it-s perfect, but it-s one country where I don-t mind leaving the car at home.\r\n

I personally love this train. It is fast, and QUIET! There are reasons for all of the critiques you have made. Let me explain myself. The -SL- lines are part of a project called CEVA. This is a railway project aiming to connect Geneva to the surrounding areas. People use it to go to work. As you said, it is a bus, people do no ride on it for more than an hour, never. The seats are not very comfortable, yes. The legroom is not good but there is a reason, at rush hour these trains get VERY crowded. I can tell you that you are happy to get a seat, this is why there are folding chairs too. Personally I like riding on the trains, always clean, the ride is comfortable and ALWAYS on time!

This train is far from being brand new. This is the first generation of FLIRTs, dating almost 15 years back. The seats are Stadler's old factory seats, now almost extinct from newer FLIRT trains.
The train is very popular because of innovative design, very quiet and smooth ride, and of course the adaptability. The interior is a matter of carrier's choice. This one is an extremely -suburban- version of FLIRT, with two pairs of doors per one car and crappy suburban seating. Compare it to Czech -Leo Express- train or to some newer FLIRT 3 trainsets in Germany, Netherlands or even Serbia, and you will soon get the real picture of Stadler trains.

Sir,
Ifbyou are traveling from Geneva Cornavin you have not been travelling on a Flirt. When going to Bellegarde you would have been on a SBCF ergo a French train. The Swiss have Flirts, all over the place, but the French state railways have not. Furthermore the SBB trains all are well equipped with functional and well designed carriages.
By the looks of it you travelled in a French trains. And your comments are not to the point. FLIRTS are made by Stadler, so they are Swiss design.
Next time please check the details on every train you use then you are better equipped.

Are you sure about the complaint of the seats and no extended trays for laptops. you're out of your mind because that particular train is designed to operate that particular sector or similar. Don't ever try to test or calibrate Swiss engineering/designing, these are being tested repeatedly before they put into service by group of engineers and designers at their best, not just decided unanimously. However for your info state of the art A380 seats are similar comparing to comfy 747's. By the way are you an engineer of any form? Watch out your words buddy. take care. -

In comparison to some other regional/suburban EMUs, the Stadler FLIRT is one of the best I think. At least they run without any (big) issues/delays.
In Addition: It's not the costumers who pay you for the service but more or less the ministry of transport who are paying for every train in switzerland with a few exceptions (e. g. a few Panoramic Express trains) so you have to ensure that the money is spent wisely. And cheap seats are one possibility for saving money.

Here in italy some of this train are used by the operator -tper- (it operates in the Emilia-Romagna Region) and, having ridden over them often i disagree with you on the stock. They accelerate well, since they are regional trains made for short trips they don't need good comfort, but a good amount of seats (in a 20minutes ride i prefer to always get a seat than having sometimes a good seat and sometimes nothing, the toilets work great and the train is silent

It should not be forgotten that these trains are used for journeys within the city of Geneva. The entire journey through the city takes only 34 minutes, and most people do not stay more than 15 minutes on these trains. They are not designed to be comfortable. They are designed to allow quick boarding and disembarking of passengers and to carry large numbers of people. It's normal that the vehicles are not comfortable, that's not the purpose

As a swiss guy that travels on these Stadlers daily, I can tell you yes; the legroom is shit, the seats arent really comfortable, but these trains rarely have more than 5 minutes between each stop. Weight is definitely a concern too, although I cant imagine that playing a big part in this. What you also cant forget is that SBB is mostly on time and basically always clean, which, at least in my opinion makes up for some not-perfect seats. :)

They use a variant of these trains in Norway both for local and regional routes. The seat layout is quite different both compared to the train set in this video and between the local and regional sets. The local sets use a 3+2 configuration non-reclining seats and the regional use a 2+2 configuration with reclining seats. One thing they have in common though is rock hard seats. Thanks for the video!

In italy there are a few of these in use by servizi territoriali (regional services basically) and they are a bit like a bus yes but the seats are better and i think they're great for commuting because they look easy to clean, good for bikes capacity and spacious and stable to stand in when they get crowded which they do. I get your review anyways it was honest and on point.

I understand what you find lacking on the Flirt (no wifi or power sockets, but I have to say that the large windows and comfortable bays of four seating, rather than airline seats, make these trains very comfortable and a pleasure to ride in, even for trips over 45 or 50 mins in duration. And that is something that one can't say about every high capacity commuter train: )
reply

i took one of these yesterday in first class. The second class ticket (for my trip) was 3. 70 CHF and the first class one 6. 50 CHF. Tbh it wasnt really worth it, but at least there weren't many people. But anyways, i do not reccomend first class, unless the train is really full and you want to be in a calm space. It's Not worth it.

I take this commuter train almost every day from Geneve to Vernier. Again, it's a commuter train, not a long distance train. it's not meant to be comfortable and luxurious. It does the job, its quiet, smooth and clean. The seats are not plush or anything but it's fine for a 5-30min ride honestly.
reply

I hate the flirt trains. We had Dosto (bi level) trains. They are very comfy now the most of the time you have to use the Stadler trains. They are a newer generation than this one but still the seats are horrible.
reply

Regarding the seats: SBB purchase the train from Stadler and chose the desired seats from the constructor. SBB chose simply the cheapest. More comfortable seats exist for flirt (for example on SOB trains.

I personally love these trains. I go on them occasionally and they are great for chatting with friends and they-re only for under 45 minute journeys. They are also very clean and quiet which is a big plus.

Looks like a crappy local bus from the 1980's inside. I agree 100 percent. MAKE A GODDANM NICE SEAT already. It's been 150 years since the first train if not more and guess what, humans STILL have butts.

You rode a commuter train to Paris? No wonder you were disappointed. That is not much different from the New York Subway, the London Underground or the San Francisco Bart.
reply

I can't understand why a regional or urban train have WC in Portugal this just exist in Intercity or high speed trains but for a regional or a urban we do in the station
reply

I have heard thibeault realy likes this train. So he should try the IR26 witch is 4 hours and 30 minutes of Flirt back pain looking forward to watching the rant of him.
reply

Certainly not the worst seat ever. Come to UK and try the Thameslink class 700 Desiro City, seats on those trains are ironing boards and leg room are terrible.
reply

This train seems fairly good clean functional better than some of the rubbish now in service here in the UK try travelling on a class 800 type unit here

You Need to do a trip from BERN to ZURICH to see a big train station. There is like 50 quais in Zurich haupbahn and this wasn-t a train it was a regio
reply

If you want a very great service inside the flirt then ride LEO Express train, they always use flirt, but they make the flirt become very luxurious
reply

You should review the MTRX/MTR Express Intercity Stadler FLIRT service that runs a few times a day between Gothenburg and Stockholm
reply

One complaint. There aren't enough places to sit down in Geneva station. People end up sitting on the steps at busy times.
reply

Anyways, we have bigger train stations in Asia. Perhaps even a mid-sized city in China has a large station for it.
reply

Tbh I like these trains cuz they're fast, quiet and cute but if u don't like them then it gets worse when they're full
reply

For really bad seats come and try out our new SNG (Sprinter Nieuwe Generatie) of the NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen)
reply

2: 08 I've last seen these types at the train station in Basel. They replaced pretty much all of them in Zurich.

We (the Swiss) are not gonna provide expensive trains for the French to deteriorate, that's why it looks so cheap: D

The Greek railway company operates trains similar to these. Their nickname actually here in Greece is Railbus.
