A few small corrections. The first generation of the V-IRM were being build from 1994 till 1996 by De Dietrich/Alstom (47 coaches total) and Talbot (till 1995) and Bombardier (from 1995 onwards for 243 coaches total) and were than called DD-IRM, which stands for Dubbeldekker Inter Regio Materiaal (Double Decker Inter Regional Material. After extending the first generation in 2000 they were called V-IRM, which stands for Verlengde Inter Regio Materiaal (Extended Inter Regional Material) or V-IRM 1 (with 1 as the first generation. The second/third generation are from the 2002-2005, fourth generation from 2008-2009. The modernisation of the first generation of V-IRM (V-IRMm) has started in 2016 and you took a non modernised first generation train. The seats in the cabin were first generation, while in the bike area second generation. I don't know why there is a difference, but I do know that there were seats added when they extended the first generation. The coach you entered at 6: 19 is one of the coaches that was added on in 2000 when they extended the train.

the toilet flushes onto the tracks? that is unforgiveable. it looks nice in other aspects. no weird wings on the seats, the mezzanine level. but the end of the cars are very noisy, also is it necesary to have all those lights on? what about saving energy. it is like an office building with 100 fluorescent lights and yet plenty of windows. gives a glarig effect. also why don't they have a snack car or vending machine? also no curtains. and why don't the europeans use a bell in the station? it is dangerous to have a moving train with no bell and all those clueless people rushing around

To know why the Windows are small a lil bit of background story
In 1991 the IRM (InterRegioMaterieel) was introduced. The passenger demand growed and the trains were lenged becoming VIRM (VerlengdInterRegioMaterieel) in the IRM there was no airco but little slide gaps above the window u could open for fresh air. Nowadays it has airco so the gaps are gone and thats why the winsows are small.
Btw the interior was not refurbushed thats why its outdated. The trains are getting modernizeid now

Roosendaal is a bit -special- because it deals with international traffic between Belgium and the Netherlands. It needs lots of extra space to store wagons that aren't in use, there's probably lots of cargo transport that needs extra space (and in the past may have needed more office space for import/export checks, and it has to deal with the differences between Dutch and Belgian technology (3000V in Belgium vs. 1500V in the Netherlands.

I love your videos. Ironically i specially love to see your reviews of trains i took myself to compare experiences. Like this one. I live in germany, so i took the ICE ofc, the Flixtrain, the swedish X2000, different dutch IC trains like the VIRM and ICM, PKP Intercity (wich i can really recommand, if you did not take them yet.
Oh btw: Flixtrain completely refurbished their coaches. could be up for another review

The windows are that size because the shape of the coaches is near to the clearance limits. For that reason the coaches will never go over the borders, even if the overhead voltage difference could be mended. The seat pitch in the coach configuration is narrow, and not too comfortable. Although the EMU's are doing services to Schiphol airport, there is no space for the larger size suitcases. That is a sad omission.

These older trains used to have the nickname 'The bagpipe'. This becausse it used to make a bagpipe like howl when moving. This has been removed by now, but it took some time before they found the cause of the somewhat annoying sound. It wasn't very loud, thankfully.
Also, the coach at 2: 40 is a Silent coach. Seen by the S on the window. In case you want some peace and quiet, or time to work.

Actually I don-t like these trains at all, cramped and bad seating and they are slow. It-s a pity Dutch railways are going for trainsets only instead of separate coaches. I miss the former ICR coaches with separate locomotives. Spacious, no double deck, comfy and very flexible. The train sets lack space for luggage and have a terrible seat pitch
reply

Roosendaal is both a terminus for many national trains and also a stop for international trains to and from Belgium. In Belgium, trains travel on the left (as they do also in France, whereas they travel on the right in The Netherlands. This is why the pattern of crossovers in Roosendaal is particularly complex.
reply

this type of train has 4 generations, the first gen is now completely refurbished (wich is also the one u traveled with i think)
(those look like the DDZ right now, but with the v-irm casco (my english is not perfect)
but indeed those are the most common trains from the NS, so u see them everywhere

reply

carefull that there are 4 genirations of virm rolling stock and that the trains are made in sutch a way that individual cars can be swopped as long as the are the same tipe, one handels power an other has a toiled etc. this is also a reason the the could be lengthend relitively easily
reply

The VIRM is s---. It used for Intercity services, but it is not designed for it. That's why the seats are terrible. Because you suppose to sit max 15 minutes in the train. The last true NS Intercity trains are the ICMm and ICRm. The comfort is IC worthy!
reply

I think it is good to use gates at railway stations. It has something like on airports were is a public area and an area for travellers only. This can produce more safety because not everyone can enter the trains and platforms without a ticket.
reply

Railways here are generally in a bad state, but apart from a very few diesel multiple unit trains, all Sydney Trains rolling stock for both metropolitan and longer distance is electric multiple unit and has been for many years
reply

6: 46 that elevated edge is really annoying. After a while it hurts my ankles or knees, depending if you put your foot on top -or beside that edge.
Thats why I always sit in the upperdeck where there isn't such a thing

reply

How on earth is a direct flush toilet still in use? And especially in The Netherlands. There's no way that's environmentally friendly to flush directly onto the tracks. Human waste? Maybe. But the paper? No way.
reply

Such a modern train in -advanced, first world- flushing human waste into the rail tracks in this day and age. If this was a video about a train in Africa or India the comments section wouldn't be so nice.
reply

Dated is probably the best way to describe these trains. They are very functional, spacious and average comfort, but their interiors are outdated. The new version is a big improvement.
reply

Built in 1994by Talbot (now Bombardier) in Aachen in Germany. Designed by Dutch national railways. 29 years on Dutch railroads with 3 refurbishments and fourth underway.
reply

0: 45 Roosendaal is in Brabant, not in Holland; )
Also the VIRM trains are not Dutch made. They were designed by NS, but built in Aken, just across the border in Germany.

reply

referbishment is done in the netherlands itself by nedtrain witch is a supsidiary off ns and a leftover of the now gefunkt rolling stock manifacturer werkspoor.
reply

The great thing about this train is that you have door hinges where you can sit on if all seats are filled. These are the thick round metal bars at the doors
reply

1: 55 it appears like an ordinary small town north European station: and then this! Woah! In the UK -- you-d never get this many tracks in such a small station!
reply

I thought everything here was common asf but when I watch vids from foreigners about our trains and stations it seems that it's not usual at all lmao
reply

I love train travel & I watch lots and lots of these videos but I've never heard a train squeak like that before. Is that common in older trains?
reply

4: 20 It is not actually that much bike space tbh. Only 1 balcony per combination has bike space and usually with an (official) max of 3 bikes or so.
reply

Intercity is the type of trains that stops at all big stations. The company that own VIRM trains is NS. We have also have GTW - diesel trains.
reply

0: 16 your typical north European small town station - albeit with amazing NS dutch frequency! My local station in SE England is pretty much like this!
reply

Driving a train in the Netherlands is quite the pleasure ride. It's comfy and fast. Though since I own a car I barely use the train anymore.
reply

The double decker trains that operate in Sydney has a huge wrap over window unlike the Tic TAC windows that you mention of the Dutch trains.
reply

And with the NS Sprinter you can go EVERYWHERE! With the NS IC you can only go to citys, for example, Roermond! Its a city in Limburg.
reply

I like a few large tables between 1 or 2 facing seats. The little shelves under the windows look too high and rather useless.
reply

The Dutch railways are among the best of the world, however most people hate going by train.
I love being Dutch -

reply

Wow so sophisticated and elegant design. In India it would be ripped apart. Wish we also have such train in our life time
reply

I'm Dutch and I'm really ashamed by such a mess in our trains! Besides, this train was already in operation in the mid 90's!
