welcome to this trip report bound to Stuttgart, this is the last trip report of my European train trip. Flixtrain is a low cost operator. - TRIP INFORMATION - Railway company: Flixtrain Train type: ES 64 U2 + Bcvmbz From: Berlin Hbf to Stuttgart N° of train: Unknown Duration: 6h37 Price: 45- 12h before departure, price start at 9
Date: 2024-01-09

I once tried the predecessor to Flixtrain on the Hamburg Cologne route (Flixtrain bought their business) and would discourage anyone from using their service who values their safety. They overbooked the train I was on (and a few more in that summer) massively. They then called the -Bereitschaftspolizei- to throw out anyone with a ticket for the train but without a valid seat reservation in Hamburg Hauptbahnhof. I saw a few people get beat up by cops because that train company didn't have a care for the bodily integrity of their customers. Those reckless business practices are not acceptable to me. Oh and cherry on top: I then had to take regional transport all the way from Hamburg because the private operator was too cheap to reset their customers on DB intercitys. All my bad experiences with DB have never gone this badly so no, I don't think low cost low standards operators are a valuable addition to train service.

I don't like Flixtrain really much. Yes they are cheap but they are treating their stuff not that well. They are not that well paid and the shifts are very stressful I heard. Yes it sounds a bit conservative but I like DB more because of their treatment of their stuff. They are much better paid. In addition I think railways should be operated by the -public hand- (I don't know, if it's the correct word. It's just translated directly from German. In transportation of goods I'm totally pro Competition, but in public transport I don't think it's really the future. For regional trains it's maybe an option but long distance trains should be operated by the states railways (again my English is bad: D) in my opinion.

They seem to have lifted their game a bit. I last took them in Sept 2018
Booked a seat, the carriage was old InterRegio stock and completely filthy. Windows dirty, seats with decades of built up dirt. I was in a compartment, The AirCon didn't work and opening the window meant it was insanely loud. Take earplugs!
I went from Berlin to Hannover but at that point you didn't get dropped at Hannover HBF, rather a station outside Hannover, you make the last km's on the S-Bahn for an extra 3 or 4 Euro.
From their website, this has improved too I notice. I thought I would never use them again, but after seeing your video maybe I will give them another go.
Thanks.

I hope that type of train travel does not get support in Europe. The airline industry has already been bastardized by private low-cost charter companies, which made traveling by plane in Europe as uncomfortable as possible, when choosing a charter flight, while not making any great improvements in major national airlines in terms of price lowering, precisely because of disloyal competition caused by private low-cost companies. Governments all across Europe should step up and put an end to that by starting to invest again in their public railway services. Take a look at Austria, China, Japan, etc.

The Interregio was a medium-distance product. They replaced the D-trains. The idea was that they would stop more frequently than the ICs, but not as frequently as regional trains. DB's idea was that the average journey on an Interregio would be around 150km. However, many people used them for long distance travel. They were only marginably slower than the IC, but cheaper.
The rolling stock were from the late 60s/early 70s that were refurbished.
It had its great time during the 90s, and basically was the train of my childhood and early youth.

reply

Around 9 minutes: Those were not refurbished, and this style of carriage was also used long distance with DB! I remember using a coach like that a few years ago, when going from german/swiss border to frankfurt. I used that service quiet regulary because my family is split between those two regions, and on those trains (IC) they had this configuration. Not always, but sometimes. I am not that into trains, so idk if it was regular or just some spare reserve coach, but the seats, layout, colors, everything is exactly as i remember it!

Insider tip for when not using a seat reservation, check at which station the train starts. And if possible use that station for departure. Then you have a good chance to find a nice seat. For this trip, if you traveled to Lichtenberg or Ostkreuz (not that long or hard travel off Hbf) you would have avoided the crowds at Hbf and Ostbahnhof. When traveling off a stop down the route (like Hannover or Kassel, always pay the small amount for a seat reservation; otherwise it is very well possible you have to stand for a long time.

The Interregio surprisingly was no regional Train. But it wasn't a typical long way train. It was kind of a combination. Interregio trains crossed the whole country of Germany but they were quite cheaper than the intercity and some Regional Tickets like the Weekend-Ticket allowed you to use the Interregio. In some areas Interregio trains replaced local trains because there was no room in the timetable for another train. Really interesting train I think

good video. i'm hoping to go back to germany in december. haven't been in years. i remember taking the train from berlin to frankfurt and accidentally sitting in a reserved seat. i didn't notice that there was a reserved sign and was embarrassed. the train was packed as it was the high speed one. i ended up finding an empty compartment and went there. no idea if i was even allowed to be sit there but i wasn't asked to leave it.

I liked this flixtrain. Although I only travelled from Stuttgart to Frankfurt and takes 3times more time than ice. But train is very long. Accomodated much more PPL than ice or even ire or regional trains which are much smaller. Had separate section for passengers with babies so passengers without as well as with babies are comfortable. And despite crazy rush still no one was standing or travelling on floor.

Nice video, Sir. Sometimes I wish you would explain why you're going to a particular destination if you're not going to do any sightseeing. For example, was there a reason why you chose to go to Stuttgart? I do know from reading Fodor's Germany tour guide that Stuttgart is where Mercedes has their automotive assembly plant. Did you have the chance to visit the plant while in Stuttgart?

It is nice to have a low. cost option on the rails, and i'm sure it isn't making the -railway system- more dangerous like some people believe, but in no way i see that as the future for europe.
I hope the future will bring even better high speed train service and not some old fashioned trains that operate at low-cost on some highly asked routes.

I fell in love with the Berlin Hauptbahnhof instantly when I walked in for the first time. Many, many train stations (especially here in North America) are dark and depressing. This one is glorious - full of glass and light. It's almost a cathedral dedicated to travel that welcomes you in saying -It's a wonderful day, let's go somewhere! -

Informative trip tips as usual but I wish you would spend more time and film footage in cafes or bistros, my favorite cars to socialize on any train. You just seem to rush right through those cars without pause or sit in all your videos I've seen. Thank you.

I loved the IR carriages. I remember travelling on them in 94 and 96 between Offenburg and Konstanz. They also ran other routes including Berlin to Amsterdam. They were a great brand that have not been surpassed on the routes they operated on.
reply

great report! I-ve never been to Ger but I like how the Netherlands gives 2 options to train travel- hi-speed & legacy. Also, the DC-NYC route is begging for a flixtrain! Amtrak is horrendously expensive.
reply

If you make a reservation for a train like this or a night train, do you have a seat number or can you just chose where to sit? And are the compartments ever full or are you the only one there most of the time?
reply

I remember my first flixtrain, it was from koeln to duesseldorf, 9 euros that same day, go and return. The train was delayed by 30 minutes but man it was good.
reply

10: 24 I'm pretty sure that this footage is at the Darmstadt main station.
Still a very nice review, FlixTrain is also one of my favourite trains in Germany.

We only have FlixBus in USA and I love it. Reserved seating and free wifi for a lower cost than competitors. Would love to see them start a rail service here

8: 21 -Legends say he his still drinking his coffee while FlixTrain runs routes in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, Austria and possibly a few more-

I am also vloger but how you filming people faces in Germany. And no one objecting? I am linving in Hamburg. and like to shoot vlog like your one.
reply

I actually travelled on that high speed lane you saw in an ICE 4 from Hamburg to Zurich one week ago! I do remember some of the places I saw in your vid!
reply

Of course companies like Flixtrain can only do business where Deutsche Bahn already built the stations and rails. Low budget is NOT the future.
reply

Deutsche Bahn all the way man. They may suck, they may be late, and they may need a lot of improvements but I'd take their trains over this anyday!
reply

There is an overnight flixtrain running from Munich to Kiel, which takes 12 hours. It costs 9 Euro. Ima try it out next fall.
reply

Que gusto da ver vagones convencionales en una Europa donde solo importa la alta velocidad aunque sea una ruina.
reply

10: 21 That-s not Leipzig Station. Leipzig is in the East of the country. The station you showed is Darmstadt Hbf.
reply

I guess you need to do a new tripreport about Flixtrain, as they modernized their stock during the lockdown.
reply

Old cars, old seats, hate colors. What do you want? A personalized train? On my opinion this is very ok train
reply

Looks like they have brought the same reliability, convenience and value of their Flixbuses to rail travel.
reply

I always love it when you enter Berlin hbf and you already hear the inverter of the s-bahn trains
reply

We have the same wagons in Bulgaria, but only in an express trains. I mean without the colours
reply

We need them in the UK. Fares are too high on long distance routes. Easyjet are the preferred option here.
