welcome back to the following step of my European train trip Today we are going to Uppsala. - TRIP INFORMATION - Railway company: SJ Intercity Train type: X40 by Alstom From: Stockholm Central to Uppsala N° of train: 291 Duration: 39 min Price: 145 SEK (10-) (Book 40 min before departure)
Date: 2024-01-09

Comments and reviews: 35

There are a few things I've noticed about this video that I would like to point out:
Platforms 11-18 are used by regional and express trains, not commuter trains, the commuter trains moved from the main tracks at the Central station to their very own tunnel station in 2017.
While the X40 units might feel quite nice they have been met with quite a few issues in the past, for example the big rounded windows on the second floor make the units extremely hot during summer as the AC is not capable of keeping the temperature down properly. The units have also been criticized by conductors for being difficult to work on as they have a lot of stairs and a relatively low roof, mainly on the top floor.
The train did also clearly not terminate at Uppsala, so what was the point of stating that when it obviously wasn't correct?
And when it comes to the text lines shown throughout the video it would be nice if they actually proper sentences containing commas, as the reading would then be a lot easier.

I-m from Sweden and I think the X40 is not the best investment SJ has made. Their almost no difference between 1 and 2 class. Early after the introduction of the x40 their where often problems with the passenger doors resulting in irritating delays because of nothing more than the passenger doors. Earlier their was food and beverage vending machines onboard but they where later removed. And SJ runs these trains all the way from Stockholm to Gothenburg via Vaesteraas and Oerebro. I don-t think the x40 is that of a long distant train. As they are often coupled as 3+2 without a passage between the sets you may have to go in and out at the next station if you happened to board the wrong car and also the train conductors must wait till the next station if their is a need to reach the other train. In my opinion, not how you should expect it to be on a long distance train.

6: 23 - while there is generally a lot of recycling, most Swedish municipalities send -landfill- / non-recyclable waste to be incinerated, claiming it-s a more sustainable way of dealing with the waste if you can use the heat for energy production or district/neighbourhood heating plants.
7: 55 - there is a much lower incidence of fare dodging in Sweden than other European counties, but regardless of this on most SJ trains (except night trains) you won-t need to have your ticket physically inspected or seen. On an all-reserved train the conductor will have a live seat map on their mobile device and will simply check to see which seats are occupied.

These trains go back and forth on a line multiple times a day. Not using plastic for trash collection just isn't functional since the cleaning crew may have to work pretty quickly. Without the bags they'd have to be ready to clean the bin every time someone has deposited something sticky. I usually bring my trash(mostly packaging) with me, since I can sort it for recycling at my destination, and I think a lot of other Swedes do the same: )

It-s not true that the tracks 11-18 are for commuter trains at Stockholm Central station.
All the tracks 3-19 are for long distance and regional trains.
Tracks 1-8 are only for connections to the north or north west while tracks 10-19 can be used in all directions.
The Stockholm commuter trains depart since 2017 from the new Stockholm City station below the metro station T-Centralen just beside Stockholm Central station.

If you take a 'normal' train to Arlanda airport you have to pay to exit the station. I am not sure quite how much I paid: it was around 6 euro. If you take the Arlanda Express you do not have pay this fee. On my way back from Narvik I alighted at Arlanda to save time. Paying the 6 euro was cheaper than going into the city centre and buying a ticket for the Alranda Express.

(2: 17) Unfortunately this special train (-Euro Express-) never arrived Venice. Because Corona Virus carneval in Venice was cancelled and the train moved back in Austria to Sweden. There are some videos about this train at YT, one with transfer by Ferry from Rostock, Germany, to Trelleborg, Sweden. - Heinz

In my opinion X40 is SJ: s worst train! Cramped and no place for luggage! Works ok as commuter train on shorter trips but they use them on longer lines too. Like the one you travelled on. It continued all the way to Sundsvall. That is 3, 43 hours. And absolutely nothing to eat or drink.

I remember riding this train not to long ago, cost around 80kr - 7, 63-
It was a pretty nice experience, me and my friend basically had the whole up stairs seats to ourself, I really recommend this train if you want to try it out. It-s silent, fast, efficient and comfortable.

Hey folks.
Just a quick correction about the type P (AB-30) coaches. I'm not 100% sure if they come from the ex-SNCB fleet. They maybe issued from the former NS or OBB fleet.
If some of you have some infos let me know.
Correction:
- 3: 15: HectorRail-

Nice review: ) I travelled with the X40 in 2018 - also in First Class: ) The sevice from the SJ is so amazing. Other train companys can learn from them. If you go with the High Speed trains the service is much better, then first class in Austria or Germany.

The plastic trash bags are definitely not wasted, they are burned for energy just like all the other trash in Sweden. In fact, Sweden even gets paid to take trash from other countries so it can be burned for energy. Some great videos on here about it.

04: 36. only 2 seconds to read 2 lines? You have been asked SEVERAL TIMES to leave the lines for a long perioud of time so everybody may have time to read without reversing; it seems you really don't give a shit about your viewers demands. UNLIKE for that.

Be safe! With this whole virus thing and tornado season, it's good to practice tornado drills and ya know, practice social distancing, wear masks and stuff, stay home if possible. Side question, how many times did you get tornados in Europe?
reply

When the Corona will permanently stop, you have to do a trip in Italy, with the brand new ETR 700
A tip, come to visit Turin in Piedmont, its main station is an historical monument! And there are also a lot of other monument ----

SJ is always using these plastic waste bags. They become only water vapor and carbon dioxide at incineration plants. metal are sorted before it becomes district heating. Fumes are very cleaned. This use less carbon than paper bags.
reply

It's just not Intercity standards - same as the new ones in the UK - everything has gone down. There is no thought for the long distance passenger - it is commuter rail standards and you just have to sit for longer.
reply

It-s generally a better idea to take a commuter train to Uppsala instead. They continue to run on the same schedules while SJ opted to use a new one.
Also, the bags are there for convenience.

I liked you better before you -went American- and started producing videos primarily to get clicks ($$$) from Americans. These videos are much more -real- and down to earth than what you produce now.
reply

6: 28 Due to Sweden having such a great waste management system, virtually no waste ends up in landfills. It is either recycled or converted to heat. Plastic bags aren-t really that much of a big deal here.
reply

4: 41 - Arlanda charge a 120 SEK access fee if you arrive at the terminals via rail. Doesn-t work out much cheaper, sometimes if at all.
Sometimes cheaper to take the bus - it-s pretty quick!

reply

In my opinion this is the worst train you can ride in Sweden today. Cramped and crowded. Especially -1 class- is a joke, it looks more or less exactly like second class, but more expensive.
reply

There is a train from london st pancras to corby which take like an hour. The train that you will be riding is like a high speed train and its called east midlands railway.
reply

There are, in fact, environmentally friendly plastics. They are made from starch and are biodegradable. Possibly Sweden uses those in their trains. We use them in our home.

Crazy think is that I have lived in Stockholm for 10 years and have been at station probably a couple hundred time, even more but I never noticed that roof at entrance. Crazy!
reply

I've lived in Stockholm for most of my life and the Central Station is the best bit of the city in my opinion. Wonderful atmosphere, lovely architecture.

2: 18 A charter train. pushed and pulled by Hectorrail cargo engines? Nonsense lol
Edit: I finally found out how much HectorRail pulls charter trains

reply

This train reminds me the Z26500 train from the SNCF.
The review is very good, I really enjoy watching your videos. Take care in this period: -)

reply

Nice. the train looks very posh. Good Travel report. Btw do you have any ideas for train travel outside Europe? Like East Asia/South Asia
reply

If you say that 16 is quite a huge number for coaches, then let me remind you that India has 24-26 coach intercity trains as well
reply

Hi does anybody here know both the width and height of this double decker train? I couldn-t find it online.
reply

slow down a little bit subs, longer subs have a short time to read them and pausing the video always is not ok!
reply

Nice that u like the x40 train, byt we in Sweden hate it, the seats are not nearly as comfy as the other trains
reply

Swedish trains are quite good, shame I can't use my Railway Staff FIP discount card on that country!
