The travel time of this train is really too long: fundamental to increase the speed and reduce the downtime at the borders.
Moreover the arrival time after 10 AM is too late as you have underlined.
I travelled in this ambience twice: once we were just 2 in the compartment and the trip was quite ok with the trick of the folded seats, once we were 6 and it was really terrible. It is cheap but for me it's more a last resort choice for travelling.
The big challenge in my opinion is to make nice and affordable couchette and bed in order to be competitive with planes for all types of users and pockets

Great video as always, thanks Thibault. I think it's the deluxe cabin for me! I've only ever once travelled on an overnight train; in 1985 on a service from Basel to Calais Maritime, leaving Basel at 0130 a. m. Travelled in an ordinary SNCF compartment on my own for most of the journey. Took my shoes off and put my feet up on the opposite seat, but was told off by the train conductor. Then straight from the train at Calais on to the boat (the Chantilly. A long and tiring journey, especially as I wasn't feeling well and had cut short my Swiss holiday.

I remember when I was a highschool student in Austria and we went on a school trip to Vienna in this wagons it was possible to lay all the seats flat to have one big bed. We had a party with loud music and dancing. Of course the teachers came over to cuss us hahaha
Also some years ago I traveled with these from Vienna to Krakow over night with my brother. Luckily we found a cabin for our own so it was quite comfortable. It took about 9 hours if I am not mistaken

i travelled Vienna - Koblenz in coach. 5 people. Number 6, didn't showed. 2 People travelled together with 4 big suitcases and 2 trolleys. They moved to Amsterdam for 6 month. It was intresting to talk eith other people. I know thst it can get a bit cold in the compartment, so i have a blanket. I was also able to sleep. they border control checked the passports in Germany.
we had service at the coachcar. We could order coffee, food.

Thibault, on OBB Nightjets, if you and your wife book a sleeper without shower, is there still the possibility of having a third person in the cabin? How can you book a non-shower sleeper and assure that it will only be you and your spouse? I've noticed when -practice booking- on the OBB website that it wants to put me in a sleeper with other males and the wife with other females. Thanks very much.

If travelling in a seated coach it is advisable for at least one person in your compartment to be awake during the stop at Strasbourg and to stay alert for any thieves who might try to take advantage of the long stop. It's also best to keep your valuables in places where thieves can't so easily get at them and make a quick getaway, preferably keeping as many such items as possible on your person.

When I traveled Europe on a Eurail pass years ago, we had similar compartments. On night trip, when four or so had arrived, filling it up with the seats down, we'd typically close the door and pull the curtains. It was off-season, so that worked fine unless the train was French with a strike happening. Then even sitting room was at a premium. At those times I was lucky be able to sit on the floor.

Here's a tip. Make sure that none of these seats are reserved (could be hard on a train like this) and then unfold them all. You can set up a makeshift sleeper that way, while putting your luggage underneath unfolded seats. Czech Railways bought these cars second hand from Austria and I tried this trick in several trains there, works like a charm, and no one from the train crew bothered us: )

Book early as NightJet is really popular. Was pricing a trip from Rome to Muenchen for May and already a couple weeks ago the sleepers sold out, prices in coach and coachette rose. Booked a Couchette, but would have taken coach if that was all that was left. The Coachette was still over a $100. less than flying and is one less night in a hotel. Great video! Thank you, Merci!

just saying but personally after riding on this accomodation when it was full. the ticket price was 80 euros for the seat and it was awful comfort wise. the space management inside the compartment is terrible if there's 6 of you, it's impossible to sleep. the seats are hard and the shape is terrible. you dont even get a pillow.
Also the lack of a dining car is really appaling.

Travelled twice on Rome-Muenchen Nightjet. Both times, I was in a compartment with five people; I looked around and moved to one with only two people, so we could all sleep well.
One thing I don't understand is: why not transform the coach compartments into couchettes? This way six people can sleep comfortably rather than only three.

Those seats in normal Mode are absolute hell, I can't sit on them. On some German IC you can get them with the old Interregion Bistro car. But if you activate Bed-Mode on a Day-Train, hue hue hue people will look confused: D. Only sad thing with nightjet is the Sleeping Cars are booked out so far in advance these days.

Very interesting review, finally someone reviewing the seating carriage! Would definitely try reserving the entire compartment, which NightJet allows you to do, even for one person. Still a lot cheaper than a standard or deluxe room or reserving a couchette room for yourself

try to assess the comfort of Luxury class trains in Indonesia, there is 1 famous train namely Argo Bromo Anggrek from Jakarta to Surabaya only 8 hours 10 minutes. or maybe you can also try the Commuter line (Suburban train) in the Jakarta area

Good, but losing 6 hours between Paris and Strasbourg is a bit ridiculous. I hope in the future they will buy rolling stock capable of taking the high-speed line. It does not even need to go 320 km/h like the TGVs, 230 km/h would be ok.

kinda a shame it happened to be a Bmz73 type coach, which usually run not as smooth and have a lot harder seats than the older Bmz61 coaches. headrests on the older coaches also are a LOT bigger, so you can actually sleep quite well in them

Looks like Hell. 3 people in a closed compartment breathing up all the air. No open coach seating? Gotta have a sleeper. Have to wake up 2 people if you want to use toilet at night? Sleeping arrangement looks like planking?

This could be a nice way to get to London from Prague: -o Always thought about the northern way but if you get to Paris you're basicaly done. Changing to Linz and go all the way to Paris sounds great. And for the price!

Hi Thibault, as a rail expert, is there a reason why the sleeper cars are placed in the middle? Like, are they subject to less -shaking- for example? Or is it simply a matter of convenience? (or is it completely random? -)

If there isn't a -Toilet Time- segment in the review, is it REALLY a Simply Railway review? :)
Also, is there no dining service on the train ) or is that reserved only for sleeper accommodations?

This is the future of train transportation all across Europe! There're plans for a Nightjet between Barcelona and Vienna starting in 2025, possibly in the new station of Barcelona-La Sagrera.

Great trip. And also it was great when you met other nationalities at same compartment. Overall trip at coach class isn't bad at all if in your compartment maximum only three persons.

That was interesting, and thanks for the seat trick tip! It would be good if OBB had a buffet car or some means of obtaining food and drink - even if it was just a dispensing machine.

Nice fact: the 468/469 numbers used by this train were the ones used by the Orient Express in its final years as a regular train. It ended in 2009 just as Strausborg-Vienna

The coach cars are most likely Eurofima Waggons, formerly used in the Eurocity trains, probably even now. I remember them from 30 years ago. Still perfectly comfortable.

Feels like for a service this long at 16 hours, they really need to offer some sort of dining car for meals. I can't imagine getting by that long only on coffee lol.

16 HOURS! So much for Europe-s -high speed- rail! You could DRIVE in less than 12 hours! And people CRITICIZE the US rail system! Just fly there in 2 hours!
