This is a quick little video I shot at Beech Street in downtown San Diego on August 17th, 2012. Every year, the Dallas Cowboys charter a special Amtrak train from their training camp in Oxnard, CA to San Diego, CA where they detrain at the Old Town Transit Center for a game against the San Diego Chargers that weekend. Here, the players have already left the train and the locomotives are moved to the other end of the train in preparation for the return trip northbound (without any of the team. Amtrak P32-BWH 509 and Amtrak P42DC 11 are the train's power for this year's run. Also on the train are 2 Amfleet coach cars, Amtrak Great Dome Ocean view 10031 (in the phase 3 paint scheme, 2 horizon fleet cars, and ex-Canadian National private car the Scottish Thistle

I think all 18 of the Amtrak owned P32's were/are slated for retirement some time in 2014. Seeing as they are still being used regularly all across the country, I don't see that happening until Amtrak gets more new diesel-electric locomotives or repairs the other 15 or so P40's that are in Beech Grove and Bear, DE now. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next 5 years. Thank you for the comment!

Nice horn action. I'm surprised seeing 509 as I thought that Amtrak had retired the entire -Pepsi Can- fleet. Especially considering that Amtrak is already going through the procedures for their future -fleet- locomotive and that EMD will be throwing its hat in the ring again, along with GE and Bombardier.

I realize that I'm about seven years too late, but why didn't they just put one locomotive on each end when they built the consist so they didn't have to do the power move in order to change directions? Also, is this still a annual thing?

That looks like a Bnsf train but it's Amtrak never seen that train in San Diego for a long time since 2012 I hear the trolley cool-
