This Yurt Will Blow Your Mind - Living Off Grid in the Forest - Ep. 48 Marty: I know you're new at this Jake but building a deck the way you have is not sufficient to have it last or make it safe. First of all, burning the buried ends of a wet pole with the bark on is wasting your efforts. They need to be dried and skinned before they can be effectively treated for rot. next, you need to skin any pole before you use it to construct anything. Otherwise, the bugs, while enjoying a meal of the cambium layer under the bark will eventually cause the pole to rot. After removing the bark you need to weatherproof the pole by coating it with something to keep moisture from penetrating the wood or it will not last more than a few years in that environment. The last thing I will mention is that you can not rely solely on the shear strength of the construction screws to hold up the deck. You must incorporate a mechanical joint to ensure the safety of the deck ie notching the poles so that the supporting lumber is being supported by the pole physically. I've done lots of building and framing with round timbers in BC and what I've mentioned above has been hard-won knowledge learned through my mistakes. I hope you take the opportunity to learn from those mistakes.
I enjoy your videos otherwise I wouldn't care enough to give you this information. Good luck
PS when you insulate the underside of the yurt you will want to protect the insulation from the mice etc. The best way I've found is using sheets of metal lath. It's cheap, light and easy to install, and will allow the required air movement on the cold side of the insulation.

They get me to click expecting to see some T&A and I get Mom Jeans and Overalls.
I do not care how much love 2 people have after a couple years living in a single room is not healthy and will get old.
Everything that is wrong with America. They leave these off-grid homes and put on Black facemasks and -Protest-
Get a job and pay some taxes!
Work really hard and then when you are older you can go play in the woods for a couple weeks.
Make sure to have a couple kids, creating future taxpayers and continuing our species and then take time for leisure.

N&J Some people and their comments. Keep doing what you guys are doing. It is real and alive. I am from Ireland now in Florida. All that rain reminds me of the old sod. Great cut N on the deck. Build many a deck me self looking spectacular. That burning of the log along the bottom, I wonder if that would work in Florida? Out of all the beauty that our lord God made on earth. He left the most beautiful to last and made woman. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Guys, Amazon wouldn't let me send marshmellows so I sent something else. Hope you find it useful. Best Regards from the hills of West Virginia!
Regarding the connections to your main porch support poles, I would suggest that you augment them with some 1/2- thru bolts as a minimum, since you will probably be square dancing up there before long. lol! Seriously though, who knows when you could wind up with a bunch of people up there.

One thing guys. I don-t know how high you are in elevation, or how much snow you get in the winter. I lived at 9000 ft stacked up against the divide and got more snow than I care to think about. The point is I started chopping wood in August and always had several chords of wood to burn. You have to make smaller pieces for your stove. Hope you split more wood than you need.

I really hope they left the trees alive the ones that look like tree stumps, old it would have been so more impactful if the trees were still alive and as they grew they created natural shade. but sadly I doubt it. Also find it haliarious how vegans are unwilling to kill a cattle thats 5 years old, but more then willing to kill a tree that has 30+ years of growth.

have now seen some episodes but I completely miss how you take care of body care and human needs? That doesn't mean to do laundry that is shown before. or, are you going on-grid again because it's easier? Especially when winter is approaching, an outdoor shower or swim in the lake is not an alternative.

Both of you, it is looking GREAT. I see a lot of suggestions and some of them not so discrete but people mean well and it is an opportunity to pick up on new techniques so just keep taking them with a grain of salt and keep up the fantastic work. Video? Getting smoother and smoother. Thanks!

You kids are doing great! Living the dream, and learning along the way. That's what life is all about. I noticed every Tom Dick and Harry are trying to tell you what to do. Don't let it get you down. It's all part of the adventure to learn as you go. Keep up the good work!
