When the riots broke out, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was quick to take to Twitter to support the violent acts of rioters, whom he described as the people of Iran.
Separately, the White House released a statement on Sunday, supporting the Iranian people in their protests.
Senior Iranian officials slammed the US double interference and double standards regarding the protests.
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif condemned as a disgraceful lie the USs expression of support, saying Washington must, before anything, be responsible for waging economic terrorism and perpetrating crimes against humanity in dealing with Iranians.

Poorly researched and crappy work here by NYT. The protests are happening at more than 45 cities, not the few mentioned here! Also, Rouhani's statement about protesters is NOT about the current protests! That was his nod to use the protests to solidify his potions against hardliners more than 2 years ago! Your sloppy work made is sound like Rouhani supports the current protests which he does NOT.

How mad this video and news I am sure is Persian and like there own government in iran does not tell the true news and does not say anything about TURKISH area. In this map and news you did not mention anything about protest in SOUTH AZERBAIJAN'S CITIES LIKE TABRIZ, URUMIYE -ARDABIL-GOSHACHAY AND MORE. I hope soon We will declare independence soon and we will make GREAT AZERBAIJAN.

Whats Behind Irans Protests? Emm. that's easy.
The CIA.
By the way, as a Sunni who is unbiased and visited Iran a couple of times, I can blatantly say that the absolute majority of Iranians support the government but the U. S. propaganda just shows the complete opposite to foster a coup there. And, since this is NYT, so there's no much wonder that this is propaganda.

Do not blame the USA. Of a country wants to be a part of the international economy it cannot continue to remain a thousand years behind with religious leader dominated country. Who said that (similar. Muammar Ghadafi. Libya became the best example of sharing the wealth with the people. Extremists and those wanting absolute power over the people are the ones to blame.
