How Jordan Peele Builds Suspense in Us Anatomy of a Scene

Theres a family in our driveway. That ominous line kicks off this creepy scene from Us, Jordan Peeles new horror film about a family (Lupita Nyongo, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex) terrorized by its doppelgngers. Narrating the scene, Peele discusses how he was inspired by scenes from the movies Halloween and Poltergeist in the way he built suspense in the sequence. He also talks about how he wrote the actions of the father character in a way that interrogates his own anxieties about parenthood.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER ALERT for anyone that hasn't seen the film. Don't read below this line if you don't want to know ANY detail about scenes.
I'm surprised that I haven't seen/heard comments regarding the role reversal of mothers in films (especially thrillers. Actually the family friends are perfect examples to describe it. The mother was adamant about the father going outside and handling the noises. Instead, the entire family got the BUSINESS real quick.
On the other side, the father walks out to protect the family with a bat but is rendered useless to the point where he nearly gets killed first. He's almost taken out of the equation. Who is there to save the day? It was the mother. She prepared the kids for survival the best way that should could at that moment. She went from being a victim hugging her kids to someone that came to quick conclusions about where this disaster was going. #legacy #film #music #igot5onit

They r determined to bring down civil war on us whether we like it or not. They're covering all avenues (politics - started w/ Trump Election, social, cultural, economic etc) as they r required to disclose b4 they drop a major agenda on us UGH! N they usually do that thru movies!
This explains y it happens in the U. S. n the whole dichotomy thing thru out the movie inclusive of white/black family.

This movie is fantastic, and this scene left me on the edge of my seat. In my opinion, Us is Jordan Peeles best film. I love everything about it; from its thrills, to its scares, to its humor, to the performances, to its thought provoking themes and symbolisms, and to its strong homages to other great horror films before it. I hope it receives the same amount of Oscars as Get Out, or maybe more.

If black people in the light of the black night say something black and ominous, it means that something black and ominous has happened to the world. And from now on horror and rock will travel onto the doomed world like a madman with a razor in his hand. And the light will not shine again in the cinema hall after the end of the film, because this film will never end.

I love just how much Jordan loves horror films-- I hope he gets Oscar nominated again, but honestly the star here is Lupita. Her acting is Oscar nominated worthy and her character Red will go down in cinematic history, I think. Also, MAJOR crush on Mr Duke (that scene of him in the bed omg)

This may be a small detail but to contribute to the idea that the boy switched out at some point before the movie. he questions when the dad asks for the bat saying what bat this may show that if he switched lifes last year he would not recall that a bat was at the home.

How he built suspense: With dynamic, loud music and sound to instill fear and edge that the flaccid script, asinine premise, obvious twist that the first ten minutes gave away and hackneyed plot with holes you could drive a truck through couldn't supply.

Actually here in my country Dominican Republic ppl laughed a lotttttt, not saying it was bad. IT WAS AWESOME! but ppl kept laughing throughout scenes and specially the ones one wouldve thought were supposed the most scary.

I watched this movie on Friday night and when it cut to the part where the tethered family was standing still outside the house holding hands, the audience started to freak out
