This weeks Op-Doc is Indra Villaseor Amadors compelling short film, A Prisoner in the Family, part three in A Moment in Mexico, our special six-part series of Op-Docs by Mexican directors. A Prisoner in the Family explores the impossible choices faced by a mother trying to care for her son after he became violently mentally ill. As the director writes, the film offers a view of what some people in Mexico face, when a lack of information, support and resources leave them with no choice but to figure out a way to survive by any means necessary. The day to day lives of many Mexicans are directly tied to their socioeconomic status, and unfortunately our protagonists have been dealt a bitter hand. This documentary is a window into the pain, hurt and circumstances that led a mother to lock her son in a room in the backyard of the familys house.

For all the comments here saying that Alberto is not given clothing or bedding due to the fact that he will hurt himself or eat them, not once did the documentary state he eats anything, I cannot comprehend how his living condition is so bad like that, it is practically a shed with no insulation or normal living conditions, how the mother and his family let him live like that is beyond me, his nails are beyond dirty and long as his hair and beard means they do not give him adequate hygiene. The bad words his mom tells him as she is finally cutting his hair wow just wow speechless. My heart truly breaks for Alberto he needs to be well taken care of his mind is not all gone as he clearly is showing feelings and emotions when he sang his sad song and cried, ironic that he song he sang reflects his current life and living conditions, another proof that his mind is not all gone.

I feel horrible for the woman who was forced into this situation, and I cant put into words how upset and angry seeing this man makes me. Not that we have any room to talk in the US, weve closed the majority of OUR countries institutions and now prisons have become the only alternative in many states. Thats not to say some of those ppl arent right were they belong, some of them do deserve to be put in prison! Im talking about the ones being warehoused not so much for the crime they committed, but because of the danger they pose to the public.

I can understand that people judge the mother, but they also cant understand she didnt like it. No institution who accept without money and no one think of that before they judge. I have an auntie like this when i was young i remember she always get lost and we keep finding her but shes in heaven now

Only a true mother can do this. I'm not talking about a foolish and frivolous woman who would rather abandon her offspring and go chasing after other men. The love of a mother is unbeatable, unstoppable, unshakable and incomparable. She is the best mom he got!

That poor soul needs help. He needs medication, a proper diagnosis, stable housing and nutrition. Is the family getting a cheque for his sustenance? Nice big pile of beverage [ beer] alongside the hammock and new looking bike.

I believe his mother cares. But to lack even the basics is awful. This doc doesn't say anything about treatment etc. No one could get better or even improve in those conditions. What about when mother passes away?

I dont understand why they dont improve his living conditions. I understand that they themselves might be impoverished but simple things like clothes would go a long way. Its painful to watch.

Isn't there any sort of a rehabilitation programme? Really feeling bad for his mother. Some NGO must chip in to help this family come out of this ordeal.

When you can't treat people for whatever reason, prisons of one sort or another are used. We used to have mental asylums in the US 50 years ago.

I think his mother has done what she thinks is best. But this is awful! Sprayed w/a hose, locked in like an animal. Does he receive any help all?
