This weeks Op-Doc is The Diver, by Esteban Arrangoiz. Part four in A Moment in Mexico, our special six-part series of Op-Docs by Mexican directors, The Diver profiles a man who has found long lasting contentment in a dirty job: diving into the sewers and water treatment plants of Mexico City to clear blockages and reduce the risk of floods. As Arrangoiz writes, Mexico is undergoing multiple crises: humanitarian, corruption, garbage. This film shows us how through his work, a human being is capable of finding beauty, pleasure and the essence of his humanity inside the detritus. This moves me, gives me hope and compels me to make movies. I think Mexico needs stories like these.

What an amazing doc. I really love the way that the director allowed certain sounds to fill the scene; it was almost haunting at times. Much like one would think for the seemingly unnatural emptiness of space, so too does the diver here endeavor into a harsh, pitch black, and lethal environment. And yet, too, we have a hero. And not just for the work and care he puts into his profession, but also the personal connection he maintains to it; it's as if he is not just physically but also spiritually sustained through that umbilical cord reaching back to the surface. A sub-mariner Major Tom.

Oh come on. come to India. here u find workers jump into the drain canal even without a protective gear. every day there are 5-6 sewer deaths here. the guy in the video is very lucky as there are precautionary measures. inspite of all this his work is commendable. THE NEW YORK TIMES please make a video on the manual scavengers of INDIA.

I just happened to see a similar video on Facebook a few days ago. Accept the man had no wet or dry suit at all. I think he had on shorts. Small goggles, and a breathing hose in his mouth. That's it. Nothing else.
No other protection. At all. Might have been South America. Maybe Asia. Scary.

You guys have not seen the world. There are people who clean sewage for their entire life without these fancy suits. Go to other countries like India, or any other Asian countries or any poor country where such suits are not even known.

Big surprise, he's not a woman. If you need someone to crawl into a sewer, a nuclear reactor, or any other god forsaken crevice, you'll find a man there. Why? Cause men are rocks, with endurance and guts!

Y'all gotta realize that without guys like him doin the dirty jobs we probably not function as a society. Huge respects for this man forreal.

I wonder if Mike Rowe ever had an episode on Dirty Jobs on this particular insane job. This is like going into a Nuke plant after a disaster!

without people like these our societies would completely fall apart. I hope this man is rewarded for what he does, he truly deserves it.
