The period science-fiction drama The Vast of Night (streaming on Amazon Prime) unfolds like an eerie radio play. Its interest in using sound to propel its plot is most apparent in this sequence featuring Sierra McCormick as Fay, a switchboard operator. The year is 1958 and its the night of a big game in a small fictional New Mexico town. Alone at the switchboard, Fay hears an unusual sound come through and tries to figure out what it is. And things get creepier from there. In an interview, the director Andrew Patterson said that much of the tension of the scene comes from the tenor of McCormicks performance. What we were aiming to do, he said, was not go to the sort of extreme that you would probably expect. He wanted the character of Fay to be grounded and calmly handle what would become an escalating situation. The sound itself, a disturbing but sometimes calming kind of whir, was created by David Rosenblad and Johnny Marshall, who mixed in instrumentation, human throat noises and mechanical humming to come up with the effect.

When my brother came to me and told me to watch this movie, I didnt expect much from it. The beginning was slow and I started loosing interest. However, as I continued on and the sound first came up I got intrigued. As the movie went on I got creeped out. And while the end of the movie isnt nessecarily to my liking, the entire movie is great!

Its a wonderful scene, in a way reminiscent of the tower control scene in Close Encounter which probably served as an inspiration especially for building mood through some on-point acting, light and camerawork.

I can only focus on
- THIRSTY! -
the product placement. The resolution of this scene better be the sound
- REFRESHING! -
of a bottle of ice cold Pepsi-Cola being poured.
- TASTY! -

What they managed to accomplish with so little is amazing. Movies rarely have that special feeling anymore mainly do to cgi. I'm looking forward to any movies this team is a part of in the future.

From this scene to the end, the movie became so mysterious. The way they delivered information is so scary and smart. Amazing movie.
