As a person who has lived in Asia and studied its history and culture for the last 8 years, here's the approach I think would be a good idea. I think it would have to be a global approach to eastern Asia as a whole. Not America, not one or a few countries, but the UN, say, as a whole addressing China, Russia, Japan, the Koreas, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and whoever else is involved and firstly APOLOGIZE sincerely for it's history of racism and dismissal of human life in these areas, and move forward saying that we ALL (including these countries) need to admit our past discretions and work through lasting disagreements. Pressure needs to be put on these countries to work these things out THEMSELVES first as respect to them that they haven't had in the past, but know that the rest of the world ACTUALLY CARES now that they get these things solved and they can't just let them fester. These things include island disputes, ocean territory disputes, and the NAMING OF BODIES OF WATER. This body of water's name has even been taken over by imperialism along with many other bodies of water in Asia. If deals can't be made over a certain period of time, then informed solutions should be brought forward and honestly, keeping in mind the past brutality and tyranny of certain countries, most namely Japan and China. Japan especially was never properly punished after WW2 and as such, many citizens there still hold onto their brutality and righteousness from that time and refuse to let go of territories they stole from their rightful owners. In the case of China, I'd say they need to let go of things like Taiwan and their push into the south china sea and while this island mentioned in the video may not rightly belong to Japan, I don't necessarily believe in belongs to China either. Other options for the island could be presented. Now none of this may work or it may have to be abandoned, as these situations are difficult and scary and deep seeded and complicated, but it would be a step in the right direction regardless if you ask me.

The Chinese Communist Party is not 500 years old. It has not existed since ancient times, hell it didn't even really get started up till the 1940's & when it rose to power it did absolutely everything in its power to destroy & humiliate & deconstruct every bit of its ancient culture further negating its current requests for claims based on ancient status. Even if we were to recognize those claims, we'd have to assert that Taiwan is the rightful China, and that it's ruling class is the legitimate ruling class, and that it's the rightful seat holder on the UN Security Council & that the changes of recognition were made based by modern claims, and modern arms, in the hopes of the WEST avoiding a nuclear war with the Communist regime. The Chinese communist party must recognize that to no matter how much propaganda it produces to the contrary, mainland China is simply a geographical feature that is sometimes many kingdoms, and sometimes a single empire, and sometimes a corrupt communist authoritarian police state that horrifically persecutes millions of its own people every other decade or so that has earned its place in the big bad book of evil history more than once. In one way or another, this version of China has pissed off as many organizations in the world as the USSR, and it ain't around no more.

China's claim of area is too big. The map shows that Vietnam's eastern coast is all under China's claim, as are a large amount of other country's coastlines. China would be fine if the borders of the South China Sea were constricted enough to allow the other countries in the region more space. Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, and the Philippines should all be entitled to a larger portion of ocean territory on the sides where China's jurisdiction directly borders those countries. As for Japan and the United States, Japan isn't on the map of the South China Sea so it doesn't have any rights to the area, despite historical claims. The same goes for the USA. The USA has no right to be intimidating China with shows of naval force in the area. Lastly, historical claims should only serve as a starting point for determining the rights of each country to the area, whereas each country in the region deserves control of 100% of its coastline with a buffer zone of a number of reasonable miles into the sea. That doesn't seem unfair to China, and it certainly doesn't add to their humiliation.

Why are you talking about this just now? This is so like 2017 lol. Decent primer but a few things: 1) Untapped petroleum reserves questionable or overstated 2) The trade flowing through is massive but would never be stopped by China. Its not in their interest. Even if they did, there are ways around that sea lane 3) A possible Taiwan crisis and US commitments to Taiwan are a much larger threat to the world than a SCS conflict. China has never called SCS its core interest. Taiwan and territorial reunification however are constantly in its core interests. To understand Chinese responses, you must understand their fragmented authoritarianism bureaucratic structures, the careful balance the government strikes between keeping nationalists happy and keeping the country stable, and you must also understand face and the difference between perspectives projected externally and those projected internally.

People should first finish their history classes before commenting here, its ridiculous to see people saying things that are fed to them by their media thats completely untrue. China did went through a very hard and painful century, too bad mao grasped the power in the end, he is evil to say the least. I often wonder what China would be like if the communist party didnt win. and for people claiming they hate Chinese and wish for a cleansing, the mainland China is a censored place, people simply dont know the truth because of the misinformation from the government, so why are you hating the Chinese people? A lot of mainland Chinese would experience a reverse culture shock, when they get more information or knowledge. They just realize they were fooled for so long by the communist party. So if you gotta hate someone, hate the communist party, leave the people, Chinese culture and history alone.

I dont like ppl expressing these problems abt us as a collective country like our minds and thoughts is one giant thing. There are so many different voices even in only one country, just like US/ UK presented on the media that there are so many different opinions over one political issue. What sucks is that opposite voices from us often dont get to exposed or even get out of our own mind. actually i dont care abt the lands claimed by whom, i dont care abt a collective group of ppl who see themselves as a country and want independence. Its all abt ppl, abt their freedom and rights. I dont think owning a few lands would do us huge economic benefit. but what's the point tho, we dont have any control or say over this, even ppl fighting for their own rights in here would got themselves in jail

Giving incomplete information could be worse than giving wrong information. China did sign. And there are strings attached: Upon ratification (7 June 1996)1/: In accordance with the decision of the Standing Committee of the Eighth National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China at its nineteenth session, the President of the People's Republic of China has hereby ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 and at the same time made the following statement: 3. The People's Republic of China reaffirms its sovereignty over all its archipelagos and islands as listed in article 2 of the Law of the People's Republic of China on the territorial sea and the contiguous zone, which was promulgated on 25 February 1992.

A good synopsis and critique of the ahistorical, events oriented ant Chinese coverage by Western media and propaganda. The Pacific is an American Lake. America is declining and China is rising. China doesnt have a history of far flung empire. It does have a burgeoning nationalism. As America declines, it will have to rely more on military threats in this region. Trumps election campaign statements are particularly illuminating. He wants detente with Russia and NATO members to take greater responsibility for their own defence so America can concentrate its dwindling resources against China. The Democrats are simply dumb is this regard. They continue to make Russia an enemy when they could be separating Russia from China.

Superpowers always bully their neighbors. Honestly as bad as america is they have to have been the most benign superpower in the entire history of our species. Anyone think a horrid communist dictatorship as a superpower would be a good neighbor? Sucks to be the rest of asia. Especially after automation makes all of those chinese peasants unemployable and superfluous. The chinese govt is going to find a whole lot of reasons to go to war with anyone and everyone just in order to use up all the worthless peasants they need to get rid of. The only thing keeping china from absolutely dominating the world right now is the fact that their culture hasn't innovated or invented anything new in thousands of years.
