I think education is an important tool versus misinformation, but I think it's scientific illiteracy as a whole that needs to be addressed. Conspiracy theorists and science denial (from flat earth, to climate change denial, to vaccine hesitancy) tend to share a root in a deep misunderstanding of how science functions. Showing studies to people who don't see the problem with implicitly believing an un-sourced bullet-point list on a website isn't going to work, because they have no solid ground for comparison or for trust in the scientific process (or to understand why the website they're looking at isn't giving an accurate picture of that process. Lots of people learn a little bit about it in their earliest science classes, but there's no reason the stuffy bits about scientific rigour or integrity would stick in kids' minds, especially if they're not using the scientific process regularly in their life after that point. I'm not sure exactly how to fix this situation, but targeting scientific illiteracy seems like the best (or really only) solution to reducing peoples' likelihood of believing this kind of false information. It would also hopefully be easier, in that the concepts around how science works are less fraught with emotion than the subjects conspiracy has consumed.

The next step forward for vaccine education is to get government out of it. Anti-vaxxers get defensive when the aggression of government is used as a stick to beat them while they learn the facts. Nobody responds well to getting facts beaten into them under the threat of violence. And government forcing the decision of vaccination is definitely the threat of violence. Take violent government action off the table, and peaceful education can proceed. Full disclosure: I am vaccinated and all my children are vaccinated. I don't agree with people who choose not to vaccinate their children, but I see government mandates of vaccination as harmfully counter-productive - government mandates are orders of magnitude more harmful (generally) than anyone refusing to vaccinate. In some cases, government mandates for vaccination is literally using a gun to threaten to shoot someone in order to force them to make healthy choices. If you don't see the hypocrisy in that position, I recommend reading it again. Stop using government as a weapon against those you disagree with, and turn to peaceful persuasion, and maybe we can help everyone be educated about actual facts.

When will people get educated on why Anti vaxxers are anti vaxxers. Im not anti or pro vax. But Im pro learn what your opponents argument to have a real discussion. I know that fear of autism is not why most choose to change what they believed since they were little. It takes way more than that to change someones entire belief system. It is annoying that his mother adds to that idea. When trying to learn why people are anti vax, Ive learned that that is not even an idea for many anti vaxxers and many dont entirely refuse all vaccines. They are afraid of severe side effects of vaccines and death which has happened. I honestly think the way to fix this. Is to make them safer. Even if it is less than 1% of children that die from vaccines thats still too many when you multiple that by home many people get vaccinated around the world. Because that alone goes against what we all thought growing up or didnt even think about but did, which is that vaccines are completely safe and we didnt even think about anything else, just did it. If we improve our technology. There would be nothing to argue about. Lofty goal, but its a solution.

cracking down on ant-vaccers via social media is just putting a band-aid on the problem. Look at the pattern. Most of the conspiracies that gain traction are centered around the idea of the government lying to us. Why? Because the government lies to us a lot. I don't think that vaccines are meant to kill people, but I wouldn't put it past the government to do that. Just look at operation northwoods. It was almost implemented, it was conceived with the intention of killing American citizens. And we didn't know about it until years after. Why wouldn't people be paranoid about the government? They have every reason to be. Go to the root of the problem. If you don't want people to jump to insane conclusions, the government needs to stop doing insane shit. I know that that's unrealistic, but honestly, until the government implements a certain level of transparency with the citizens of the U. S, there will ALWAYS be anti-vaccers and flat-earthers. Fact.

Look, if you take the bait and give RK the benefit of the doubt, I really don't blame him for his lack of composure in this interview. If he is an innocent man facing however much money in fines, life in prison, and a name forever trashed in the history books, then I would be as distraught as he is as well. At the very least, he seems desperate and terrified, not calculated and scripted, like you would expect someone who knows they are lying and doing they're best to make it believable would. As far as the interviewer's safety, I'm surprised they didn't have security step in sooner, but it also didn't seem like she was in any sort of real danger. He was angry and distraught, not violent. He wasn't throwing things or knocking things over or verbally threatening anyone in any way. But still, in such a high-stress situation face-to-face with a potentially violent man, she is to be commended for keeping her composure.

I really hope our government passes a law/bill that makes it so EVERYONE must get vaccinated regardless of your views/religous beliefs. Its not about your view or beliefs its about the health of everyone else around you (and your health believe it or not. These vaccines are NEEDED to prevent the spreading of these diseases and the needless deaths brought about by these diseases. Since those who don't want vaccines don't want to be quarantined in their homes for the rest of their life your only choice, should, will be to get vaccinated. If someone I love/cared about died (or was severely injured/altered) because of you spreading a disease because you weren't vaccinated. there would/will be hell to pay. No force on this earth would stop me. from stopping you. Thats how much I love my family and your not going to take them from me because of your uninformed/narrow-minded views/opinions.

I'm curious has research ever been done on high fevers and autism severity? My mom isn't antivax but she believes vaccines can cause autism. The reason for this is because my oldest brother has moderate to severe autism. I've told her that studies show vaccines don't cause autism and she just tells me that my brother had been talking and developing normally until he got the MMR vaccine and it caused him to develope a high fever and after that he stopped talking and his development seemed to digress. I and my other brother are vaccinated but she had our vaccines spread out more and didn't let them give us the MMR as one shot and until we were older like 4 or 5.

Good on you that you don't consider anti vaxxers and flat earthers to be the same. They are not. You can use your own eyes to get proof that the Earth isn't flat and you don't even need to go to space, you just need binoculars and a seashore. Vaccine is different. I'm vaccinated and I've never had measels. I believe these two are connected because I believe the doctors who made the vaccine and the ones who gave it to me. I have no way of knowing if it works of if I'm just lucky. Of course it works. It has been proven time and again. I still can't know it. I have to believe it. That's why it's such a difficult issues.

Sometimes there is a simple reason a family is against getting vaccinated. My mother gave my sister and I the choice to get vaccines, and we both said no. Mostly because we were children who didn't want to get poked by a large needle. Now that I am an adult I still have never been vaccinated because I have the choice. I don't necessarily agree or disagree with people for or against vaccines, but I vehemently oppose making vaccines mandatory. I prefer having freedom of choice and it would probably take getting sick with a disease that possibly could have been prevented by a vaccine to change that opinion.
