Some European countries legalized prostitution but it doesn't seem safer (or just slightly. I heard that even with legal prostitution, illegal prostitution still exists. There are still human trafficking, abuses, rapes, mistreatments, even in the legal market. And I don't think philosophical arguments like if selling and seks are legal, so selling seks should be illegal. It's like that murderer who killed a person with a gun. The judge asked him: You know you were carrying a tool to kill people? And the murder replied: I'm also carrying a tool to rape people. Not sure if we should put penises at the same level as guns. So comparing two logics out of their context is not necessarily valid. And the top of that, after the Telltale incident, we can't even protect regular jobs, so I don't understand why people are so eager to protect a few prostitutes. I understand that some people can't have seks without money but to get money we need jobs. Maybe with safer jobs, prostitution will decrease.

Legalizing prostitution is something that should happen. It's a far safer avenue for those willing to provide and those willing to partake. On top of that it can be ran under certification where birth certificates and social security cards are a must for all workers involved. This stops the trafficking. For the men and women who want to make money this way the legalization would be leaps and bounds in security. Not only is the job legal but your work place will have surveillance and security to boot. The penalties for forging the necessary paperwork, both the person buying it and the person making it and/or doing it illegally on the side ( as in someone who works in a office handling said thing, should be egregiously high. No plea deals. No slap on the wrist for the first time. You get caught and you're done. You never see the light of day again. Human trafficking isn't something you tackle lightly. It's the fly you go after with a bazooka.

I remember writing a 14-page informative/persuasive essay about the debate around the legalization of prostitution, that I had to present to. My initial plan was to persuade against legalization, as I had been raised to believe was morally right. As I researched, however, I found myself realizing that I was going to have to do the persuasive argument in /favour/ of legalization. I am really glad that I had to do that paper. :) I feel as though, through doing my own unbiased research, I was forced to learn how to question even (what I thought of as) my basic morals. I really enjoy questioning my beliefs and morals now, without fear of facts somehow destroying who I am. I hope that everyone gets a chance to question themselves this way. Just wanted to share, and say do your research, because it may not only help you to be correct, it may also lead you to find a new perspective on something, or even yourself.

Prostitution being made legal while being safer overall, will mean anonymity will take a further hit than it already has. The Greater majority of prostitutes and the customers want to remain anonymous. That's the main reason it's underground, it's a taboo that's heavily frowned upon in society and having it under further government scrutiny will have major negative effects on Prostitution for both sides of the transaction. Still even while illegal safety is most definitely not the main concern of the government, taxation is. You can't even sell your own body without government intrusion and that right there is reason enough to not register for anyone engaging in prostitution. It's a lose/win/lose situation.

What's suprising to me is that some people thought the findings of this study were suprising. Criminalizing and demonizing these women has only served to make an already vulnerable population far more vulnerable because they aren't treated like human beings with the same rights and resources as everyone else. The logic of it is ridiculous to begin with. These women aren't prostitutes because they want to be - the Johns on the other hand certainly have a choice. If the law really wanted to prevent this, they would be going after the buyers who make the transaction possible, not the desperate people who are putting their lives on the line because they're out of options.

I live in RI and I have never heard anything about this. It's interesting to hear about it because I do know a lot of Rhode Island history and this time period seems to be left out. Personally I think legalization would be a great thing, especially as I don't think I-95 is as much of a threat as it's being deemed. The locations of the exits for 95 don't really make it too much of a threat as a lot of the exits actually end up in more rural areas or even just farmland. Rhode Island has been a blue state for a while and I feel like there actually might be a good chance of these sorts of laws passing, and as a Rhode Island voter I'm all for it

I am no fan of prostitution but I am not against it either, people can do what they like with their bodies. Its their life, their body nobody elses. if its regulated and controlled then as others have said we can protect them and help vulnerable people who feel like they have no choice but to do this kind of work and help those people for everyone else who just wants some quick money well provided they've taken whatever precautions they can and are fully happy with themselves then I see no reason to stop them. its their choice. Choice is the only true freedom anyone has. Ironically it would also cut back on police spending as well.

Hey Philly, I'm from Australia and its legal, at least in Victoria, to be a prostitute as long as you're working at a brothel, and from what I know its the same, disease and rape decrease dramatically, diseases because they have to get checked regularly and rape because they can tell the police without fear of being arrested, if someone whether male or female wants to sell their body and skills just like a builder then why not? Everybody sells their body and uses the skills they have to get money, prostitution is no different, we have no right to tell someone they can't do that.

I completely agree with decriminalization of prostitution. However, it has to be done right the first time around. Like considering the medical and psychological needs of prostitutes along with making sure that they are not being forced into it. Licensed locations that have security in place and that have procedures that refuse stds. Like maybe requiring clients to test for stds every so often before allowing them to engage the prostitutes as well. Its just something that has always been around and one of those things youll probably never get rid of.
